Qatar greatly under-performed. They are miles ahead of all their Gulf peers and would have expected them to go much further. I'm surprised both Qatar and Oman which are the only GCC teams to be in the running for the qualification for WC14 have been very poor in this tourney.
I was expecting the UAE to win. Kuwait is crap and were never really challenged (they beat Saudi & Yemen to get this far). Iraq has been amazing, but I have a feeling that Bahrain will score an equalizer; they are high energy and seem to be attacking more. I expect to see a much stronger second half performance from Bahrain. Iraq needs to stay strong and be careful with the fouls. Ref has been very fair and his calls have been top notch so far.

Really? Miles ahead? I wish this to be true as I live here but what exactly has Qatar done to prove they're miles ahead of everyone else?

I agree with Coach2007. The Qataris are clearly thousands of miles away from us. They're in the other side of the World as we speak, searching for better players to naturalize. :ROFLMAO:

LOL! Anyhoo, it's UAE vs. Iraq in the final - the two best teams definitely in the tournament... each team winning all four of their matches...well, okay I guess Iraq did technically tie Bahrain today, but I was thinking at the beginning of the penalties, in some ways I wanted Bahrain being the host nation to win.. but at the same time was thinking if Bahrain win, and say they win the final on penalties, too.. they'd basically win the tournament having won just one game, that on a debatable penalty vs. Qatar so I'm glad the two best teams will play in the final. Should be a great match. Unfortunately I won't be able to watch with you guys as I'll be on a plance to Micronesia but enjoy guys!

Anyway, I'd like to congratulate Iraq for winning the right to host the 2015 Gulf Cup of Nations. Hopefully the organizers aren't going to dismiss Iraq for a second time, but anything's possible these days, thanks to the GCC's not-so-brilliant politicization of regional football.

I didn't really follow up with this tournament. Although I promised myself not to watch a single match, I must admit I was tempted to see Kuwait play a couple of times, but I still couldn't do that and it's mainly because of my academic schedule. Nevertheless, I expected the UAE to do well in this tournament, therefore I'm not surprised to hear that we lost to them. After all, they are our bogey team, and it also doesn't help that they're the most talented team in the region right now. As I've said many times on BigSoccer, the UAE is perhaps the only country in West Asia that is properly building for the future. The UAE have adopted a policy of long-termism and so far it's behind their success. But this shouldn't be the end of the road for them. I expect a lot of great things from the UAE in the 2015 Asian Cup. They have the best football academies and infrastructure in the region, in my opinion. They also appear to be aiming for a more sustainable professional football league system, unlike Qatar. Somehow, they didn't advertise their facilities like Qatar did. They were very quiet about it and were waiting for the right moment to make their statement. Fair play to the UAE for teaching other GCC countries a thing or two about long-term planning and patience.

There's no shame in losing to a side like the UAE and there's nothing "crappy" about the Kuwait national football team. I didn't watch Kuwait play but reaching the semifinal for the third consecutive GCN tournament isn't exactly something that a "crappy" team does. We have a lot of talented young players, who still haven't played for the national team. Hopefully they get their chance to represent Kuwait in the 2015 Asian Cup qualifiers. Kuwait's only major fault is that it's very mismanaged. Having said that, I'm optimistic about the future of Kuwaiti sports, in general. We'll get there someday.

Congratulations! Iraq did a wonderful job incorporating its younger players in the squad. The performance of both teams were great. Although, the second half was very different , nevertheless the expertise of the older Iraqi players and great defending was a huge plus. Also the not too long ago appointed new Iraqi coach did wonders; he read the team properly and his tactics and subs paid off. Good luck against the UAE

Kutsuit- I apologize for using crappy but come on we suck so bad and you beat us by only one lousy goal (I personally would have expected more), and while watching the game I actually started to think we may have a shot and win and I've only felt this optimistic maybe twice in the last 10 National games only (one was against Yemen). I agree Kuwait has several talented young players and nourishing them will be key. As far as blaming management- well I think almost every Gulf team has that problem; players are not fully utilized to their true potentials, and barely challenged.

There's no need for you to apologize. It's your opinion and I respect that, but I simply disagree with you. I don't think we're crap and I don't think Saudi Arabia suck either. The Gulf Cup of Nations is very unpredictable, for the most part. Consequently, this tournament usually doesn't give a true indication of any team's capability. Therefore, when a country like Kuwait makes it to the semifinal in three consecutive GCN tournaments, it should be seen as a positive testament to that country's resilience. I don't think resilient teams can be crap, but I do believe they can lack a few things that would make them better. As for Saudi Arabia, they're probably the most consistent team in the history of Asian football. It's going to take a lot more than a few rough years for them to suck, in my opinion. And even if your team does suck, that doesn't mean Kuwait should beat Saudi Arabia by more than one lousy goal. This is a derby, after all. Derbies always have their own special atmosphere.

The Kuwaiti player Abdulhadi Khamis has a bright future, I like him alreay. I hope he wont despaire just like Al-Meshaan did. Youssef Nasser, Baer Al-Mutawa, Fahad Al-Rashidi and Abdulhadi Khamis... Kuwait have dangerous forward they just need to sort a nice combination to get the best efforts from them.

Last night, I irresistibly broke my promise and ended up watching the replay of the semifinal match between Kuwait and the UAE. Today, I watched the third place playoff game between Bahrain and Kuwait and I was very proud of Kuwait's performance. The typical anti-Kuwaiti football guests, at Al-Kass Sports Channel's talk show, unsurprisingly played down our victory, by claiming that Kuwait played against a second-string Bahraini side. Unfortunately, they also failed to mention or realize that Kuwait's team wasn't "first-string" either. All in all, I was impressed by most of our players today. If only Goran played the likes of Al-Khamis, Al-Salimi, Al-Shammari and Aman in the semifinal... I'm sure they would've given the UAE a good spanking. The UAE isn't the only team with a lot of promising young players. Anyway, the most important thing for Kuwait right now is to qualify for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. Australia is where it all matters, in my opinion. It's been a long time since Kuwait ever won a major Asian football competition. I don't know why Al-Mashaan wasn't selected for the tournament, but I really hope he plays in the Asian Cup qualifiers. If Waleed Ali retires, we'll end up with Fahad Al-Ansari as our primary midfielder, and I haven't been convinced by his performances in the two matches that I watched.

With regard to the final, I feel like I have to say something that has really bothered me... I've praised the UAE for building an excellent football infrastructure in the region. Unfortunately, however, it seems that it's time for me to say something negative about the UAE. Although the country deserves a lot of credit for investing in its youth football system, it hasn't done quite a good job in educating its sports fans. The booing that I've heard from the UAE supporters in tonight's final, as well as the booing I heard when watching the replay of the semifinal, is well and truly disgusting and tasteless. To disrespect another country's national anthem is very immature. Class is something that you cant buy, I'm afraid. I have overseas relatives in the UAE and I'm sure they don't behave that way. Somehow, I think those fans mostly come from the southern/southeastern parts of the UAE.

It must feel so frustrating to be an Iraqi supporter right now.

I was hoping/planning to congratulate the winner of tonight's final, regardless of which team it was. I've been following up with this generation of UAE players for quite some time, therefore I really wanted to be happy for them. But tonight's UAE fans brought shame to their own country and ruined the spirit of sportsmanship, in my opinion.

I'm not going to congratulate those fans, though. The only people I'll congratulate are the players and staff members. A special congratulation goes to Mahdi Ali -- who happens to be an Iraqi-born, by the way. I wonder what he thought of the UAE fans when they started booing his country of birth/origin during the Iraqi national anthem.

I feel sorry for Iraq. They lost 3 consecutive final matches between November 2012 and January 2013. It must be really painful for the Iraqi fans and players but I'm sure their team will bounce back in no time.

Thanks for your good posts! Really appreciate it :)

It was such a disgusting way to lose. Ref was against us, The commentators against us, 90% of the stadium against us, and we took it all the way to extra time, only to concede a counter attack. I am proud of the way the team played. They had a great game and they deserved to win the cup. besides the organizers of this tournament, the blame should go to hakeem shakir. His tactics in the first half were dead wrong. We should have gone into the game attacking. If we attacked from the beginning we could have won the game 2-0 in normal time.
First half was a disaster but I think the second half was one of the best halfs that this team has played. Humam was great, Ali Adnan was great, Younis was great, and so were all the players.
I just hope that the fact that these players have lost 3 finals in a row doesn't affect them psychologically.

This tournament by itself has shown that the Iraqi NT can have depth. Ali Bahjat was a substitute and remember how well he played against Japan!

It is painful yes, but to be honest it's not the end of the world. These are all regional tournaments (except for the Asian Cup U19 finals). I see them as a preparation for the WCQ and ACQ. :)
