I think this is getting overblown a bit.

It's a loan - I'm sure he'll impress and Anderlecht will inquire about a permanent transfer. But as I said on our season-ending podcast, the offer will have to blow United away. In all honesty, I feel there is about a 10% chance he won't be here this season.

United will actually benefit from Andy going on loan because it will put him in shape to go from the first whistle. And even if he does end up getting transferred, it will benefit United financially because United will be able to keep the entire transfer amount because he was a homegrown player.

My guess is Andy will be with the team in Orlando in February..

    I agree with you.
However, all they have to do is offer MLS enough money so it makes good business sense - I don't think United has much of a say, do they?

Yes, two-thirds RT @jeremyrueter: if Najar is sold to Anderlecht what do United get? Share of transfer fee?

    Actually 3/4 of fee since he's "home-grown"

I don't know the answer to this in general, but I know that New England fought hard to prevent Twellman and Joseph from transferring to Europe, and succeeded.

I'm not suggesting he be in camp, I'm suggesting he's falling down the pecking order. At the end of our qualifying round I thought he might have a chance to displace Howard, or at least spell Howard for some games that might not be too hard (of course the Hex is the Hex). I no longer have the feeling that Guzan is in a position to take over for Howard. It's definitely Hamid or Johnson's net once Howard can no longer get it done. I also don't think Shay Given will be on AV's bench too much longer, either. He never struck me the kind of guy who would sit and collect a paycheck. I don't believe his form has dipped significantly.

    Thx,

    Jay!

Then what else are we supposed to do here? Isn't this the idea of the off-season? Wait you want us to be ra...tion...al?

I think this is a bit of a different animal due to the relative age of Najar to Joseph and Twellman (both in their mid to late 20's during their negotiations). Also of consideration was the complete dismantling of their team had both of those deals been made. Dempsey was already gone, it would have been tough to tell Cheapskate Kraft that he would lose Joseph and Twellman.

United is in a good position. Najar is young, his profile IMHO will only increase from this point (due mostly to international appearances) with his new found right back position. I said this on our show, he can play now in Europe at right back. His skill set in certain leagues (Spain and Italy for example) would flourish (not so much in England or Germany I would think, but I Germany is closer to the Spain/Italy comparison above).

That may be a touch of hyperbole on my part at the moment, but Andy is still only 19 and does have 3 full seasons of playing experience under his belt already.

United should hold out until on this guy. I don't feel that's the case for other players on this team with European aspirations (Pontius, McDonald, Kitchen, etc...). I'm not suggesting in any way that they refuse all offers, i just feel it needs to be worth their while. They won't find another talent like him from the Academy for quite a while. They should be paid accordingly by a European team..

I'm sorry, please feel free to go nuts. :)

I think people see "loan deal" and equate it to an eventual transfer. The facts actually are pretty low that these loans come to a transfer fee. I just don't like seeing the leap from "loan" to "he's gone" based on a loan deal.

Totally agree - I know I can get sensitive/protective about him as our 1st really exciting home grown talent. This is totally rational BTW,

I think it all depends whether Andy is willing to re sign a new contract next year and put off his Euro ambitions for 2-3 years.

If he's determined to get to Europe as soon as his contract expires I see no problem shopping him now while we can get a transfer. Otherwise we lose him anyway next year without any reimbursement

What leads you to believe this is the last year on Andy's contract?

Andy signed a new deal with the club prior to this past season. It was a multi-year deal and with all contracts with MLS players, add another year for the club option. So, in essence, he signed a three-year deal with using one of those years up this past season. However, if it was for longer than two years, then all the better.

Assuming Andy has atleast 2 years left on his contract I would expect MLS/DC would be looking for something in the 3-5 million dollar range. Anderlecht would be a great team for Najar to go to but I would like to keep him around for another year if possible.

I hope DCU can match whatever offers arrive, until Madrid or Milan start calling.

Back when I played championship manager, a loan to a mid level team would always attract the big names and higher offers -- even if/especially if they were scrub players. Perhaps it's true in real life.

    Hmmm...

I'm wondering if Najar's "loan" is the first domino to set off the rest of our pre-season roster moves. If Najar leaves, then DC's going to get a pretty good chuck of money ($3-4 million off a $4-5.5 million transfer, which should be the minimum asking price) and that money would open up quite a few other opportunities. We could go after some good South American or Latin American talent to augment our offense and have enough to make trades to move up in the draft or allocation list. Najar's departure would also allow us to make a move on Crisanto, as he was a target of our previously before Seattle got interested. Now it looks like Seattle has made other plans, and we could get a Najar replacement without even breaking a sweat.

I'd still be a little upset if Najar left before we could see his full potential as a RB, but there would be so much more to look forward to if he did.

Hmm, okay. I dunno he seems better than any of the GKs in camp, IMO. He's the no. 2 as far as I'm concerned. But if you mean in the long term pecking order, is he going to take over for Howard one day? No, maybe not. But I'm not sure I ever expected that really. He could be Brad Friedel who had to wait behind Keller for a century before he was no. 1, but I can't say I expected that either. There are so many contenders that can come and go, I guess I never assumed Guzan was the heir apparent.

maybe I'm still misunderstanding you. ;)

On my google machine the only info I could find is that Andy signed a "multi year" contract in 2010. Can't find any links about the re-signing Andy did in 2012.

I just assumed Andy was on his 2010 contract still

I'd be surprised if Anderlecht spent 5 mil this winter. Not saying it's impossible, but that's on the high end of their financial ability especially for a right back.

I think our transfer season is frozen because of Salihi. It's hard to proceed without knowing what ends up happening there

I heard an interesting podcast (forget which one) in which someone asked if another good change to MLS rules might be to make home-grown players "off book" in terms of the salary cap for more than the few years they currently are. I think that'd be an interesting added incentive to keep improving homegrown players and academies. Another way to do it would be to allow teams to recoup even more than the 3/4 they already do. The difference of 8 1/3 % isn't really gonna make a big difference currently to MLS teams. But an extra 25% on top of that would!
