Since the list for the January camp was released I figured it was time to update ... Call ups for the January camp at the HDC ... AJ DelaGarza Omar Gonzalez According to Klinny ... LD has been omitted because he is still on "holiday" Just for the heck of it, here is the entire roster for campp GOALKEEPERS- Tally Hall (Houston Dynamo), Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire) DEFENDERS-Steven Beitashour (San Jose Earthquakes), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), A.J. DeLaGarza (LA Galaxy), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Connor Lade (New York Red Bulls), Alfredo Morales (Hertha Berlin), Justin Morrow (San Jose Earthquakes), Jeff Parke (Philadelphia Union) MIDFIELDERS- Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (out of contract), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Benny Feilhaber (Sporting Kansas City), Joshua Gatt (Molde), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City) FORWARDS- Juan Agudelo (Chivas USA), Will Bruin (Houston Dynamo), Edson Buddle (Colorado Rapids), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)
Yeah probably not as it's usually been to get looks at more marginal players.. maybe JK considers him that now.
Nice to see Brad Davis finally get a call up. Also, let's see what Edson can do. Wonder if he'll be used at all for the Gold Cup. I would think it may be used for younger guys, though Edson may get some qualifiers if he's in form. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the call ups. Let's see what Benny can bring to Klinsy's team.
Hopefully this mean Omar is going to focus on breaking through with the USMNT, and not focus on transferring to an European team until next January when his contract is up.
Now Omar gets his chance, and I expect him to seize it. He is going into this camp with loads of confidence and he's gonna lay the gauntlet down (is that the proper expression?) and emerge from this camp as a key figure in defense. I expect him to shine and get called in for the Honduras game and establish himself as a regular call-up. The team needs him to do this.
If Omar makes the Nats for WCQ and other competitions, Bruce had better come up with a really good "Plan B" for playing without Omar. Last year's "Plan B" was a disaster. Cudicini will really have to earn his keep if Bruce can't field a better Omar-less center pairing than last season.
Yes, Gonzilla will be just about 100% healthy and brimming full of confidence going into this camp. And it looks like he used the down-time last year to work on the weaker aspects of his game so I expect he's going to have an excellent camp. Really hope he seizes the moment.
Yeah, if he is going make the WC2014 lineup he needs to make his mark now, get into some regular playing time, and play significant minutes in the hex. Regardless of what happens with Omar, I really hope Jurgen identifies a CB to pair with Cameron for the WC. If he doesn't, we are going to have a very short and brutal tournament. Goodson, Boca, Onyewu--pretty much anyone you care to name has either age or talent problems for 2014. We need another CB and now is the time to find him.
No kidding. The perfect storm of age and injury has opened up a Gonzilla-sized opening in the USMNT starting lineup for him...
You, me, everyone and his brother in the soccer community hopes for this. I've been writing this in the Nats thread, but he has a giant spotlight on him in camp. More so than anyone, and I mean ANYONE on that roster, including Gatt. Cause no one wants Clarence Goodson replacing Boca - and I mean no one. We need a CB right now. Badly. And Besler is a quiet #2 behind Omar in terms of attention. This is Omar's time. I hope he takes it. And the media is paying attention, and will be this entire month: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/news/20130107/landon-donovan-usmnt-camp/ Good luck to him - I want him to shine in that spotlight.
I cannot see him being here more than 6 months, and at the most, a year if we are willing to let him go for free. I hope he succeeds. He makes the senior team, more paths open up for him.
He won't only be here with the Galaxy for the next six months. Because in six months he can sign pre-contract with a non-MLS team, and join them next January. Most teams will prefer that then having to pay a transfer fee. Plus I don't think the Galaxy want a transfer fee. I think we'd rather have one more season, plus hold his MLS returning rights, then getting a transfer fee. If we sell Omar, and Omar wants to come back to the MLS in a few years, he'll have go through the USNT player allocation process.
Forgot about the pre-contract. And fair point about the returning rights. Wonder if money conquers all for the short term, but have no idea what the FO will decide. I trust Bruce on this one.
I am not rooting against Omar. Far from it. I just want to see the team better equipped to deal with his intermittent and eventual permanent absence.
Or he could be gone in the summer after a few USMNT caps so he can get a WP to play in the EPL, that is if LA wants to sell him so they won't lose him for nothing.
Oh, I didn't think you were. And yup, we need to be prepared! Cause I don't think we are keeping him either.
I dont want to derail the thread but depending on the combine, I wouldnt doubt that Bruce would be on the phone with TFC about that #1 or #3 pick if a CB impresses. Omar's leaving within the year. No doubt. We need to prepare and the sooner, the better. And just to make this post relevant-- I hope Omar shines and takes one of those CB spots and makes it his for the next 10+ years.
Glad I'm not the only one thinking this. When I saw the call-ups the first thing I thought of was that AJ's trade stock just increased.
