Yeah ok but I still don't think a trainer will have made that much of a difference in injuries for an entire team of on a season either way unless he was totally useless to begin with.

Human physiology is still human physiology. My bet is most of the medical research that the suns trainers are using was not done with basketball players, and some of it may very well have been done on soccer players. Yes the surface that is being played on is different, but the key to what they are doing is identifying and isolating fatigued and poor performing body parts, then targeting them for treatment before those weaknesses cause dysfunctional movement patterns that lead to injury. Its the science of all movement, not the science of basketball specific movements. It can be applied to any sport.

Can excellent use of sports medicine prevent all injuries? Of course not, but they can prevent some, and they can help players perform at a helthier, and therefore higher, level.

If you are using indirects well then maybe I can see the relation but I still don't see how and why they fired Bruce Morgan as I don't believe he was directly at fault for all of the injuries this year unless he was completely incompetent. I also don't see how he would have had the job for all these years if he was a bad trainer. Salinas being taken down by Rafa Marquez wasn't his fault and I don't see how he was responsible for Bernardez injury early in the Gals game either. Either way, I hope they find a suitable replacement for him.

Perhaps his leaving had nothing to do with his ability as a trainer.

I never said that was why he was fired, or even that he was fired, I was speculating what might be a reason for that to occur. If you believe your team has a poor injury record, then the entire sports medicine staff you work with has to come under scrutiny. Whether or not a trainer is "at fault" is irrelevant. The question is whether you can do more. And I would assume that there is more that our staff can do, no one has accused our training staff of being ahead of the curve. Therefore, if you are ambitious and looking to get any advantage you can without exploding player payroll on DPs, making sure your training staff is doing everything they can to prevent injuries is one area in which you can improve.

As for specific injuries, its hard to say. But while little could be done about Salinas's freak injury, are we certain Bernardez's injury wasnt due to a lack of flexibility in a joint or muscle group, or a lack of strength in a muscle group, that put undue stress on his knee?

I'm sorry, but that is total BS. Attitudes like that are why NFL players are suffering early dementia from head injuries. The concept of playing thru an injury is passé, and no ethical coach should let any player do so, regardless of their willingness to "sacrifice for the team".

So you're saying that doesn't happen? Okay... "Total BS" is thinking players and teams don't play with injuries.
Coaches even play guys who "aren't 100%". Far from BS.

The Quakes, (and the league) appear to be very careful with head injuries these days, so, it is not like they have a wrong "attitude" when it comes to injuries.
A sports hernia is not a true hernia at all, but, a type of muscle pull. Since it is a pull, there are likely degrees of severity. I believe a sports hernia was one of Alan Gordon's problems that he needed surgery for (in 2011), and what put him out for the rest of the year. Who knows, Beita's could have been so slight that they might not have even had the correct diagnosis until the end of the season. Anyone that has played soccer knows that it is a difficult sport to play when carrying an injury. It is usually quite obvious when someone is not 100%. Beita's offensive production certainly tailed off as the season went on, but, I don't recall anyone here claiming that Beita appears to be playing injured. Tired maybe, but, not injured. I just wouldn't jump to conclusions without knowing all the facts.

Well, this is turning out to be a really great thread. We had the "great Bernardez injury debate" and now the Bruce Morgan firing that wasn't. Brilliant! :--)

Well, duh, of course you'd find a discussion of Ethiopian restaurants in the Alan Gordon thread. :)

That's one thing I never quite understood about BigSoccer. Why all the angst about going "off topic"? The beauty of online forums like this is the stream of consciousness kind of flow, where you could wind up discussing virtually anything from anywhere. And if someone wants to bring it back on topic, just do so. If folks don't follow, then the topic had probably already been played out anyway.
