Why do you like it on paper (since we have no idea how much allocation)?

There's got to be other moves before I can judge this one. This is one sloooow team as it stands.

Interesting. Not shocked to see Omar traded. He is better suited to a 2-man front line. Doesn't have the motor, or desire, to track back as a flank in a 4-3-3.

That said, I'm not sure how much I like the trade. I guess it depends on how much allocation money we got, because Omar for Sturgis isn't an even deal.

Not unless the 2010 Omar is coming back, which he probably is not.

Well, RIP C and C Goal factory. They were sure fun when they were in business.

    > badouchy

This is a forum-approved misspelling, correct?

Lovely, another defensive midfielder. Those of you who thought we'd play the Barcelona-style 4-3-3 with a single d-mid might be disappointed next year.

There's now 11 players left on the roster from the team that won MLS Cup just two years ago. And that's only if you count Ceus, Armstrong, Akpan, Smith, and Wynne, the latter two of which are out of contract.

Oh well, to their credit, the new RFO has found a way to keep up some traditions of the old regime - renewing players' contracts at inopportune times, and then panic trading when it doesn't work out.

It might be necessary. I'll wager a beer that Larentowicz gets traded.

I thought the same thing, but I like to hold onto the hope that getting rid of recent All-Stars in favor of picking up MLS journeymen is not the master plan.

Omar was one of those "protected" players right after the post-season meetings were over right? I think Jeff gets traded, and the long-rumored DP ACTUALLY happens.

Bianchi tweets make it clear that the Rapids are not done making moves. I'm with Spot, Jon & jdub...I don't see any way JL is on this team next year.

It will certainly be interesting to see what this team looks like in mid-February, and then its "fingers-crossed" it doesn't take the squad 6 months for the guys to gel.

Which isn't true. In 2009, he had 8 goals and 12 assists, which is one of the best seasons that a Rapids forward has ever had. In 2008, playing mostly as a sub, he managed 6 goals and 4 assists, which BTW is better numbers in points-per-minute than any player the Rapids had this year.

I won't argue that if you're going to trade him, now is the time to do it. Without Casey, Omar's been a shell of himself. But picking up a journeyman is the best we can do? In 17 years, the RFO's ability to negotiate deals has not improved one iota.

You can't look at the trade on its surface. This deal (I'm assuming) has a lot more to do with the allocation money than it does Sturgis. Regardless, in picking up Sturgis the Rapids have now given themselves flexibility to move Jeff, which makes a whole lot of sense based on the current roster as well as Jeff's performance last year.

...and in exchange for Jeff, they'll pick up another project journeyman who showed flashes but never caught on anywhere.

And hey, considering we already picked up two journeymen with knee injuries (Buddle and Harris)...Ballouchy fits the profile perfectly. Exciting, attacking soccer here we come!

This is a really good deal for Omar. Houston has none of the issues the Rapids have, they just went to the MLS Cup and Omar, barring injury, makes them better. So I'm happy for Omar, and he's earned my good wishes.

I first started watching Omar play when going to watch the old Rapids reserves. Everyone who followed that team could see he was exciting player with potential. He had a knack for hitting the ball hard and over too often.

Omar started get a sniff of first team action in 2007 under Clavijo, but didn't really hit the team until 2008. He continued to look promising showing an ability to beat players, but a poor finishing touch. Even so he was second on that team in goals scored and third for assists, though the team wasn't stellar as far as stats go.

Whatever Omar felt about Smith his best years were under him. In 2009 he lead the league in assists and earned the Rapids MVP award. In 2010 he lead the team in goals. 2011 was going to be a big year, but the team went from let down to let down. It was start of too many games when Cummings and Casey weren't on the field together. When they were both there though they still produced.

I don't know right now if Omar is dodging a bullet or missing out on a glorious new era for the Rapids. At the moment his immediate future seems much more assured than the Rapids. I wish him luck. Like Casey and Kimura he provided me with a lot of good times at DSGP so I'll give an extra clap when he takes the field there again.

Boy, I sure can't wait to watch Sturgis sit on the bench for 30 games.

sounds like we got either a large amount of money or that money is going to be put to use almost immediately

Can I borrow your reading-between-the-lines glasses?

Because there's absolutely nothing there that suggests either scenario.

I kind of had a feeling that Omar was headed out the door sooner than later. I can't say I'm surprised. He's going to a good situation in Houston and it will benefit him. Moving forward, OP is trying to build "his" team and Omar just didn't seem to fit long term. I like Omar and there's no debating his importance over the years but for me personally, he's never been the same since the ankle injury and he had become the most frustrating player to watch. I'm excited that he is getting a fresh start. I'm also excited that potentially a "new era" is starting. Having a roster overhaul is a bit of fresh air as I've believed the club had gone stale. Sturgis has played mostly as a CB and I think he gives us good coverage and depth.i don't have an issues picking him up. But more importantly is that allocation money. I wonder how we are going to use it. I just pray all these moves work our to our benefit. Time will tell.

Lets bear in mind here, any non-tangibles we trade for (allocation money, draft picks, etc.) are really only as good as the thing you ultimately use them for. Take the Kimura "trade" for example...we didn't actually end up using that international slot we traded for, so we basically ended up giving him away for free.

This squad still has some serious roster issues that need to be addressed, until then I would consider this a total bust.
