Are there any surprises about these participants? Sign says that surprises exist. What criteria they use?
Yeah. I it will the 1rst Libertadores Cup for clubs like Iquique(CHI), León(MÉJ), Univ.César Vallejo(PER), Tijuana(MÉJ), Real Garcilaso(PER) and Lara(VEN). Huachipato(CHI) played his last Libertadores Cup in 1975.
For some clubs I have never heard: Leon, U. Cesar Vallejo, Real Garcilaso and Lara. Stadium of FC Leon is Nou Camp. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_León I have heard for Nery Castillo, ex-players Jared Borghetti, Luis Islas, Rafael Marquez, Hernan Medford (ex-GNK Dinamo Zagreb), Marcelo Balboa, Eric Wynalda, Denis Caniza. Chilean player Edgardo Fuentes was important player for Cobreloa (1992). U. Cesar Vallejo: player Pedro Ascoy Cortez changed a lot of clubs. Very young club (1996). They share the same nickname like Croatian club NK Zagreb (The Poets). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD_Universidad_César_Vallejo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NK_Zagreb Deportivo Lara has interesting coat of arm. Founded in 2006. And they came in the strongest tournament. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deportivo_Lara They have one player with interesting surname Liebeskind (Sweet/Dear Child). Some other surnames Colina, McIntosh, ex-manager Stalin. Jose Higuita played here, well known in Europe. It would be interesting to follow CL. Corinthians won against Chelsea. Too bad that Vasco da Gama is not here, they were second in their league I think. Cobreloa, River Plate also. These clubs are the strongest in this season? In Champions League there are not many surprises. Everything is known when we see the groups. *BRASIL: Corinthians, Fluminense, Palmeiras. *ARGENTINA: Vélez, Tigre, Boca Juniors. *CHILE: Universidad de Chile. *ECUADOR: Emelec *MÉXICO: Toluca *PARAGUAY: Cerro Porteño *URUGUAY: Nacional, Peñarol

Id say the strongest clubs will be mostly Argentine and Brazilian teams. Id bet that one of Corinthians, Fluminense, Velez, Boca, or Newells will win. my teams that could surprise are Millonarios and Tijuana. Millonarios, I watched them alot in the Sudamericana and they have some players I like. and with Tijuana, never underestimate the power of drug money.
Brazil and Argentina have a lot of participants here. I see that Anderson Polga came in Corinthians. Paolo Guerrero, Renato Augusto are well known. Manager of Club Tijuana has Croatian roots, he is Argentine also: Ricardo Antonio Mohamed Matijevich (Matijević). Often surname in Croatia: http://imehrvatsko.net/namepages/view/family_name/prezime-matijevic-2 A lot of Croats live in Argentina. Maradona has Croatian origins also. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croats_in_Argentina http://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodatak:Popis_poznatih_argentinskih_Hrvata Corinthians seems confident now, because of their trophy in Japan. Copa Libertadores 2013: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Copa_Libertadores Alvaro Recoba still plays (Nacional), Carlos Grossmuller, Dario Rodriguez, Marcelo Zalayeta (Penarol). Peruvian-Croat Renzo Sheput will play for Sporting Cristal. (Šeput) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renzo_Sheput Thiago Messi plays for Newell's Old Boys. Is he related with Lionel Messi? Lucas Bernardi, Gabriel Heinze, Maxi Rodriguez are famous from this club. Manager of Tigre, Nestor Gorosito played on WC 1994. Nice to see some players who had a role in European football.
That may very well be true, but lets be honest it's very hard to judge their comparable quality when the quality of the Uruguayan primers is what it is.
I know nothing about this current Peñarol squad and don't disagree that Uruguay's league is not the most competitive in CONMEBOL. But Peñarol wasn't that great a team in 2011, and yet they eliminated Internacional, Universidad Católica, and Vélez Sársfield at their stadia. All were ranked higher than Peñarol and were better teams. I never imagined Peñarol would have eliminated Internacional at home, and think Vélez Sársfield would've had a better shot at beating Santos than Peñarol did. If the 2013 team is better than the 2011, I'd keep my eyes on them.
Well of course they could make noise, so could a lot of teams though too. I just don't know, i make a point to watch Nacional-Penarol every year just because I have friends on both sides but outside of that futbol Uruguayo isn't a huge draw to me. I still feel quite comfortable saying one of those 5 teams will win. Plus a side note for how small a country Uruguay is the amount of quality footballers they produce per capita is remarkable
Don’t underestimate Atlético Mineiro and Grêmio. The former was the runner-up in the 2012 league, were consistent throughout the tournament, and they boast Ronaldinho Gaúcho. He is past his prime, but he rediscovered his form with Atlético and showed many flashes of the brilliance Flamengo fans had hoped he would have shown. Atlético has never won the Libertadores and it is a team which does not reach the Copa frequently, so they’ll be hungry. The latter wasn’t as strong as Fluminense or Atlético in the league, but they delivered when it mattered. Grêmio is a team with tons of history in this tournament, and they’ll definitely be better in 2013 than they were in 2007 – they were simply outmatched by Boca in the final and frankly, they overachieved. If they reach the final in 2013, it won’t be an overachievement. They just signed William José, a promising young striker, who won the Sul-Americana with São Paulo last week. And they do have Vanderlei Luxemburgo, one of Brazil’s better managers.
And what it is, is 4th-best in South America. So not bad. But yeah, I think Brazil's teams will dominate this edition of Copa Libertadores. Especially when you have the likes of Arsenal and Tigre representing Argentina.
How do you qualify your own team's chances, now that Carlos Bianchi has returned? Has your team's roster changed significantly (besides Riquelme's departure) since Corinthians defeated Boca for the Libertadores? And, although there will be signings and roster shake-ups for many teams between now and the Copa, what's your take on your country's other teams?
Indeed, and São Paulo will play the playoff, with a group stage berth on the line. This Friday, we will know who São Paulo's opponent will be. São Paulo has already started to revamp its roster for 2013. Lúcio has signed a 2-year contract. I hope that he will continue his copeiro ways with my team: he won the Champions' League, the Coppa Italia, and the FIFA Club World Cup with Internazionale, and as everyone knows, he won the 2005 and 2009 Confederations Cups and the 2002 World Cup with Brazil. Rumor has it that Breno may also return. A Breno-Lúcio backline would be a fearsome defensive line. If Lugano were to return (unlikely at this time), SPFC would have three of the finest full-backs in the entire continent, and I'd love to see that - I stubbornly believe in the "defense wins championships" motto. (Apparently, so does Tite.)
Palmeiras (deserves a ) could be destined for a disastrous campaign since they lack the resources to field a competitive squad in the Libertadores. They were relegated in the league after clinching a berth in the Libertadores by winning the Brazilian cup. They would have to get lucky and fall into a really weak group to have a shot of advancing.
Well, Velez is clearly the class of Argentina right now. Even though Boca just beat them a few weeks ago, they are not at their level. But you never can rule out Boca in the Copa Lib. The starting XI isn't too different from the one that reached the final last season. Shiavi retired but he's replaceable. Riquelme isn't though so that might be a problem. If I'm understanding the draw correctly, Boca could get a tough group since they are in Pot 3 , which might be the weakest. Possible group: Corinthians, U de Chile, Boca, Sao Paulo.
Vélez still has Gino Peruzzi, who for a youngster did a good job defending Neymar in 2011. How good are Facundo Ferreyra and Iván Bella? It should be interesting to see how this Vélez roster, with talented but young players, will fare in a high-pressure stage like the Libertadores. As for Newell’s, they do have Ignacio Scocco, who scored twice against Brazil recently. Is Newell’s significantly below Vélez?
I heard they're going after Riquelme, although it might be hard to convince him now that Bianchi just returned to Boca. Any other big names?

Nope. They are broke. There's no chance Riquelme would go there to play the second division. They don't have money to pay him. Riquelme is rumored to a Brazilian team every offseason and nothing ever happens.
