Hi folks. With the trade of Ike Opara it looks like it time for the 2013 version of this thread. I'd like to continue to make this thread distinct from the other preseason or speculation threads by keeping it to discussion of the roster and roster changes if possible. I'd like this thread stay a one-stop thread for folks who just want roster news and analysis.

So just to recap, here's what we know so far:

Sam Cronin and Jason Hernandez signed new contracts, so that 13 of 15 regular starters are in current contracts. The remaining two targets are Ramiro (see below) and Dawkins (fingers crossed).

Corrales, Opara, Ward, Gjertsen and Stephenson had their options declined. Of these names only Corrales seems likely to return, though we won't find out for certain until the second round of the Re-Entry draft this Friday, in which we have the 14th pick. I believed we moved up when Chicago used their pick

Sercan Guvenisic was waived on November 19th, and no one selected him in the waiver draft on the 26th. I am removing him from the roster.

Ike Opara was traded today to SKC for their 2nd round draft pick (33rd overall). I am removing him from the roster, and adding the draft pick.

I wonder if Goodson's played enough games for the Nats now that if he came back to MLS it would be by allocation? Anyone know.
I think we get our participation for lotteries back again now that the season is over, no?

I don't think it matters how many US National games he has played.

    MLS Roster rules

Goodson did not go abroad for a transfer fee. He decided not to sign a new contract with the league when he left for Norway in 2007. Quakes retain his MLS rights if and when he decides to return to the league.

And yes, Quakes are eligible for lotteries again but are way down on the list due to the team's success this past season.

Clarence Goodson is going to be 31 in May and it seems by his stats that he is starting for Brondby. Is there any indication that he really wants to come back to MLS and/or San Jose one year before the WC? I doubt it.

I thought Ramiro's $183k token salary and/or contract was declined?

Yes it was, but I can't really alter any of the option-declined players until the re-entry draft tomorrow. I made a note about these players in the first post. I imagine he'll be resigned by the team at a lower salary, and that we won't know that figure until the union releases them all.

We just took Ty Harden, Bryan Jordan and Dan Gargan in the re-entry draft.
Dan Gargan will be a back-up right back, Ty Harden a back-up center back cheaper than Opara, and Bryan Jordan can back up just about every position but keeper and center back.

I suspect what FY likes about Jordan is his speed together with versatility. I expect he likes the price tag on Gargan for a solid back-up with experience who will be good in the locker room. Ty Harden is re-united with the coach who originally drafted him if I remember right. He's never really impressed me, but we'll just have to wait and see. I think we should pick up a fourth center back and it makes sense that only one of those should be a rookie from the draft to develop. Having our first back up be an experienced guy seems a smart move.

It's crazy that Zayner would retire, he's not even 30 & he's on 60 some thousand for playing in the reserves. What's he gonna do get an office job?
Have we even signed those other three guys? I thought we had 7days to offer them contract terms?

    From his wiki page...

Zayner serves as a celebrity spokesman for both the U.S. Soccer Foundation's Passback program and Lacelet, a fund-raising accessory that benefits the JuvenileDiabetes Research Foundation. He also began his own non-profit company called Filleo [1] in 2007. The company sells t-shirts and raises money to provide clothing and education to youth in need.

    www.filleo.org

Looks like he's the kind of guy who either can make his own opportunities or is interested in doing something for the greater good rather than serving as a MLS back-up.

OK, we had a big re-entry draft. The following names have been added to the rights area:

Dan Gargan (D) {12/14/82} [<$88K] - Deal confirmed by Elliott Almond
    Ty Harden (D) {3/6/84} [<$98.7K]
    Bryan Jordan (D) {9/13/85} [<$55K]

I'm also eliminating Jed Zayner who retired and Khari Stephenson, Tim Ward, and Joey Gjertsen, who were not selected today. I'll leave Ramiro since he has been reported as returning at a lower salary, but have made a note on his salary.

I guess so. He wasn't part of the original five announced for the re-entry draft. I never saw an announcement on him, but Elliott Almond did list him today. I also just found this article which lists him the the second round of the re-entry draft. I'll make the adjustment know. Thanks for the catch.

I'm sure you've researched this thing and probably know a lot more than me. If your figures are accurate however, that means they only have around $873k to work with. I hope they find a way to dive it up among the rest because it doesn't seem like that much.

Yup. Consider that Beita will probably get about the same raise as Morrow, there is another $65 K. If we work out a permanent transfer for Dawkins, his salary probably goes up at least another $50 K. If all 3 reentry picks are signed, that's probably at least $175 K. That is at least $290 just right there. Board speculation is that Wondo probably gets a raise. Bernardez should be considered for a raise, IMO, and there are still three sr. roster spots open. Plus, we still haven't seriously addressed midfield upgrade/quality depth.

    It all goes very quickly.

Plus whatever they will end up paying Ramiro , Dawkins , Salinas and the draft picks. I think the $873k will be eaten up easily ...

I heard because they are the Champions League , they are going to get some type of roster salary break in the cap but not sure how much that will end up being.

Wondo almost certainly will get DP status.

How much of a salary bump do we get from the league for CCL?

I'm not sure about the CCL salary bump but that is what I heard. As far as a DP salary hit, I think (unless they changed the rule) its like a $400k against the salary cap regardless of what they pay him.

OK, this one took a little research, and anyone who has better into should feel free to correct me.

As of 2012 DP's count $350,000 against the cap in a case like Wondo's according to MLS Rules. Those rules make no roster exceptions for being in the Concacaf Champions League, but do list qualification as a reason to be awarded allocation money. The new methods of using that monet are:

No dollar amounts are given, but this article by Ives Galarcep says that the Galaxy got $300,000 for winning the Supporter's Shield and qualifying for the Concacaf Champions League last year. If we get a similar amount this would be our "wiggle room", perhaps making the Dawkins transfer possible.

    QuietType repped this.

Looking at the "budget roster" there really isn't much in the way of "fat" to trim there. Hopefully they'll find a way to reduce Ramiro's $180-something. I'm not yet sold on Ballouchy, but they're not going to move him, especially while he's recovering from a serious injury. Hernandez is not a good value at $175k, but he's kind of a "heart and soul" guy. May mess up the karma a bit to cut him.
