A couple of players I think the Crew might want to look at are Josh Gardner or Ike Opara. Josh Gardner played well for us until Montreal snagged them. Opara would make a good centerback pairing with Marshall if Bobby is insistent on having Williams on the wing.

    Thoughts?

    I wouldn't.

He's going to turn 38 before next season ends, he's only started 18 matches in the last two seasons, and he's probably going to be more expensive than you want in a role player.

Sorry if I'm missing an inside joke, but in case you didn't know it, Ward was out injured all year. He has some strange issue with his leg muscle (not sure if it's quad or hamstring or multiple muscles) that has not responded to any kind of treatment, and the doctors just told him to not play and see if it got better. It did not get any better all year, and that's why he was not signed by the Quakes.

At the right price, Higuain directing Angel and Arrieta would be a sight to see.

I believe there is an age and years of service requirement that he may not meet.

Hartman: a straight swap salary-wise with Hesmer and arguably one of the league's best ever keepers, I'd take him in a heartbeat. I'd take him in the first round if he's available.

Mapp: overpriced but I've always liked him, good creative influence on his day and would be a good veteran to have around the team

Segares: extremely overpriced, had a bit of a down year, but would solve LB for us, maybe in the 2nd re-entry draft? Take him at half the price

Wynne: maybe should have jumped for Europe when he had the chance after impressing for our U-20's. No way he is worth what he makes, and never really understood why Gary Smith moved him to CB. I would think he still offers more at RB. Like Segares, take him at half the price

There are a few others in there, like Gaudette who I'd have back, but the above four jumped out at me the most.

The reason we cut Hesmer was because of salary, no way we bring in another GK at the same cost to back up the Hammer, that's what Lampson and Luthy are to compete for on league minimum

Ward played for the Crew at first. He was, in a word, unimpressive. And petulant IIRC.

I always think it's fun to try to make the best team out of these guys, I'm going with.

    --------------------------------------Hesmer

    Freeman----------------Califf-----------------Opara--------------Segares

    --------------------------------------Birchall

    -------------Avila------------------------------------------Wallace

    -----------------------Moreno----------------Paulo Jr

I'd consider Avila, he's out of contract, make him an offer. He normally plays AM or LM; I've got him playing right above because I think his right foot is better than his left. I remember liking him in Dallas, he came of the bench a lot for them the year they made it to the cup they rewarded him by shipping him to the dumpster-fire posing as a soccer team up north.

Segares makes a more than you'd like to pay but he's the best LB in this thing, if we don't have a better plan then take him. I think if you really want him you have to take him in the first round because someone will pick him up before us the second time through.

I'd take Opara but again I think we'd have to take him in the first round because someone will want him before we get to pick again.

Well that's part of it, but I don't think it's the sole reason. I just think he is done with pro soccer, I'd be surprised if anyone takes a chance on him.

    1. Well we haven't signed Luthy yet, and Bliss made it sound like there might not be enough in the kitty to sign all of the HG kids that they'd like.

    2. As far as Hartman, who says he would be brought in as backup? Sigi said the other day that when they signed Rosales, they didn't even have a specific need for him, just that when the chance is there to bring in a top player, you take it. Hartman's a class act and the kind of guy I'd definitely want in my squad.

Ultimately you're right though of course, having two inexpensive options at #2 and #3 makes the most sense, especially for a team that has such a shoestring budget.

Sounded more like homegrowns will be one of our main reloading tools because they are cheap to me. We had to cut veterans because they cost too much. If anything I thought he sounded like the three seniors were probably the easier part Trapp was the hardest part.

Definitely, but should they convince Trapp to sign (and I'd think he's the top priority) then there isn't enough left over for at least one of the seniors, probably either Barson or Luthy.

Why do you think that? Honest question, I just felt like we were going to be really cheap this year but I'd like to see money spent elsewhere I just don't see it yet. Lots of homegrows and draft picks in our future.

It's been awhile ago, Bliss not sounding optimistic about having the money available to get all four. Trying to find it now. Anyway, this offseason is going to be so Moneyball it's crazy.

We just got rid of 13 players salaries, if we don't have enough to sign Trapp, then we've got some real fiscal problems ahead

Isn't Hartman from Athens? Don't know if he wants to come back to Ohio but he'd be ok as a backup if he wants a gentle transition to retirement. I'd rather have the Hammer as the starter if there is a question as to who starts.

How much is Gardner's option? Did he play poorly for Montreal? I thought he was ok when he played for us in 2011 and he was cheap this year.

Wonder where that team would come in cap-wise.... That's the challenge. It is likely that a number of these guys did not have options picked up because they were due a substantial raise--not because they were bad players. There usually aren't a lot of players picked in round one--at least not players who have an option you would have to pick up.
