http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...de-guzman-segares-among-re-entry-process-list Chivas USA's Danny Califf, FC Dallas' Julian de Guzman, Chicago's Gonzalo Segares and Colorado's Marvell Wynne were among some of the more prominent players among the list of 63 whose contracts are either lapsed or whose options weren't picked up by their clubs.
Here is the official link: http://www.coloradorapids.com/news/2012/12/roster-freeze-lifted-teams-begin-building-next-year Looks like it is a re-negotiation tactic. Would hate to see him go, hopefully it is just one of those administrative things.
Playing a dangerous game with Wynne. If he pulls out of the re-entry draft then its probably a sign that both sides know they have a deal coming and they're just working on the brass tacks. If he doesn't pull out though this will blow up in Bravo's face. I find anyone taking Smith or Freeman at their current contracts highly unlikely, so we have an additional week to get a deal done with them.
freeman should stay his price is tad high. but i can see him fitting in fine at center back left back or right back. smith let him go we can draft a guy almost on his level infact we got one in tony c. wynne tho if he goes to another mls team oh boy imagine olave and wynne in ny
You guys are forgetting that if he had an option then it was either for the same amount or possibly for a higher value than what he was getting this year. His salary was 250/326K. If the option was to keep him at the same salary, I could go either way on it. Because of our lack of bodies back there right now, I probably would have picked it up. If it was supposed to increase though, I actually get not picking up his option. I get the feeling he has a very good agent if it has reached this point. I bet they work something out and he is back for the same amount or slightly lower value.
As Jason said, this is a very dangerous game indeed. Unless the RFO has a serious ace up their sleeve, weakening an already depth-starved backline seems like the worst move imaginable right now. We already have a revolving door of outside defenders, so our solution is to possibly drop one of our solid starting center backs? Figure it out RFO...
I understand the cap number argument, but we also shed about $700k-800k in releasing all the other guys we did. And we already have a very slow backline...so we release a guy with irreplaceable speed? It's like this team is being run by a guy with a twitter-, "what have you done for me lately?" mentality...
Good summary of it. You have to wonder that if Bravo is leaving for London tomorrow how are these contracts going to get done before trade opens??
So unless we re-sign some of the guys we cut today...we have 10 players left from our MLS Cup team. And one of those is Pablo, who may not play another minute of professional soccer. 3 of those guys played zero minutes in '10 (Armstrong, Akpan, Ceus). 1 is coming back from an Achilles tear (Wallace). We have officially dismantled the best team we ever had. The "it's the players' fault!" excuse is plainly an invalid argument next year, when we fail again.
They don't have to get done by then, a player can choose to remove his name by Thursday and not be in the re-entry draft.
Wynne is fast, but his salary does not = his productivity. I can't see anyone picking him up at his current salary. I'm guessing we resign him at a reduced cost.
Or at least the belief by the player that a deal is going to get done. What the player is risking by taking his name out is that if he can't reach a deal the current team will hold his rights and he won't have the option to go somewhere else in MLS without his rights being traded.
Agreed, so if I am a TD I want to be here negotiating till the last minute which is my point that Bravo leaves tomorrow.
I'm not that concerned about that. Negotiations don't have to be face to face (my bet is that they rarely are since agents aren't generally Colorado-based) and if both sides feel fairly confident they want this to work there's no real pressure to get it done by Thursday. Now if they're far apart on somebody like Wynne then that's a concern, but it would be a concern regardless of if Bravo was scheduled to leave or not.
I'm hoping we do re-sign him, but at a reduced cost. While he has improved tremendously in terms of his tactical knowledge, he still makes silly errors that lead to goals, and it seems to happen every 2-3 games. You don't pay someone $250k for that. TBH, I find it hard to justify paying any of the current defenders a high salary after giving up 50 goals last year.
I would add his speed and physical play have prevented more goals from other players mistake then he has given up do to his play. However, this past season was sub-par for him since he got here.
By the same token, you don't throw out the entire defense from a team that gave up just 32 goals in a season 2 years ago. Especially when, no matter who you pick up, you're inevitably going to make your defense slower than the already-rather-slow defense that gave up 50 goals last year.
This. Moor and Wynne were never perfect but they have been and can still be an excellent pairing. Wynne would probably make fewer mistakes if he didn't have to sprint out of position to go after an opposing winger who went completely unmarked by any Rapids wide player. Moor would look better if he weren't forced to play fullback, or if while at centerback, Wynne didn't have to chase someone down in the corner, or if the d-mids had stopped ball watching and marked someone. The speed comment is important, too. Kimura's crosses were predictable and thus less effective than Freeman's, and he was known to overcommit on D from time to time. But he was one of the few players on the team would had the speed to track back to deal with counters. With him and Zapata now gone, I'm not sure anyone besides Wynne has that speed on D. Maybe Klute*, but he of course gets the offseason standing asterisk of "we don't know what the heck this guy can do for us on a consistent basis. The Rapids are sorely lacking in pace on the attack, too, with only the oft-injured Cummings supplying it at this point. The Rapids can do very little to make a defense respect a quick run, so defenses can compact their lines. We all know how the Rapids do when forced to handle the ball in tight spaces.
That's certainly true. To be clear, I really want to keep seeing Wynne in a Rapids uniform and if they can't re-sign him, then I really will think that dismemberment is Paul Bravo. I just don't think Wynne is worth more than $250k / yr, and if the option was significantly higher than that, then the Rapids are probably making the right decision to decline the option and try to renegotiate. Wynne makes more than Victor Bernadez, Matt Besler, YP Lee, Jamison Olave, Nat Borchers, and Aurelien Collin. I'm not of the opinion that he should earning more money than all of them.
Defenders who make more than 225k base salary Danny Califf 275/275 Chad Marshall 310/341 Wynne 250k/327k Emiliano Dudar 225/238 Julio Cesar 252/256 Rafa Marquez 4,600/4,600 Heath Pearce 293/302 Bakary Soumare 240/280 Carlos Valdes 268/268 Darren O'Dea 330/436 I don't know many of the Eastern Conference guys that well, but I wouldn't say that list is really a great representation of the best defenders in the league. I think 200-215 is a fair value for Wynne. Because the situation has come to this point, I bet if a deal is done this week, it is about 225 base. If a contract isn't done and he ends up going through Phase 1, I bet most teams would pass on him at his current contract, but unfortunately it only takes 1 team to ruin that for us. Scary game to play. I also really don't want to lose Freeman either.
Not saying that contract we inherited when we got Wynne was "priced right" but there are way to many teams with CB needs to chance him in draft. Heck Toronto going first would probably snag him back.
