Whoops. I stand corrected. Good looking out! But you get my point. PJS and LYP both ended up being stars in the Premier League on top teams.
Eh ... I wouldn't exactly say LYP was a star at Tottenham. More often than not he was scape-goated and his situation got worse when he refused to transfer to AS Roma. WHY LYP WHY?
Oil moneyz. Our boy Nam Tae-Hee might know a thing or two about that. But my point is, LYP was able to compete on a high level in the Premiership as well. Tottenham is not a slouch team by any means. Ji's skills are raw beyond reason and he is honestly too soft to be anything but a wing player.
God thought he'd be better off in the heart of Islam making that money on a more serious note: The Korean Premier Leaguer Lee Young-pyo on Thursday denied he turned down an almost concluded transfer to Italian club AS Roma for religious reasons. The footballer has decided to stay with his current team Tottenham Hotspurs. After arriving in Incheon Airport from London, Lee said at a press conference in the airport that some Italian reporters speculated that I turned down the switch offer for religious reasons. But I never took religious reasons into account when deciding on the offer." But Lee declined to go into detail for what he said were personal reasons. Some 50 attending reporters repeatedly pushed him, but he would not bend. AS Roma is a team every soccer players wants to join. It took great courage to reject the offer. Lee said in terms of football alone, it would be better for him to move to AS Roma. But I concluded that staying with Tottenham Hotspur would be good for me. I believe I made a right decision. Lee's decision has become the talk of the town not just in Tottenham but all across the European football market. Plenty of athletes have refused trades there, but bringing the whole deal to naught after the two teams already finished negotiations on the price and the athlete's new salary is a singular occurrence. Arrows of criticism are expected to rain down on the "unreliable" athlete. The most worrisome question is what life will be like now at Spurs, since Lee has fallen out of favor with manager Martin Jol. After personally bringing Lee from his previous team PSV Eindhoven, Jols faith in the athlete was so great that he played him in almost every match. This season, after reinforcing with defender Benoit Assou Ekotto from Cameroon, his reliance on the athlete dipped, but he moved Lee over to the right and continued to use him constantly. But as Lee opposed the trade, which is an exclusive right of the manager and the team, a sudden chill in Lee's work environment seems likely. Before the rumors of the switch to AS Roma spread, Lee was thought to have been on very good terms with his teammates and coach. Lee returned to Korea to join the Korean national soccer team for preliminary matches against Iran and Taiwan for the Asian Cup 2007 finals. http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2006/08/31/2006083161020.html
Really didn't follow football too well back then but really sad he didn't play well in the PL. PSV is a good team though and has history not just for Korean footballers either. They're big fish where they play and it's in the Netherlands what's not to love?
Not to mention the style of football they play and Eredevisie being a good league for a young prospect.
To be fair, it's not like PSV is some farm for Korean players. It just so happened that 2 of the greatest KNTers of all time played there under one of the best coaches in the world.... Hiddink believed in both of them before they even signed to PSV (duh WC04) and gave them every opportunity to succeed. I think PJS and LYP were more than likely special cases, outliers, than PSV just being a great starting club for Korean players. With all that being said, JDW should of gone to PSV lol.
Jol used him on regular basis back then. The problem for Tottenham then were the Center Backs, kept breaking down in the second half unable to maintain leads. has he said anything more about why he chose not to go to ASR? The only thing 've read was some vague remark touching on religious reasons but nothing significant.
he claimed that religion wasn't the reason and if you think about it, he later moved to Saudi Arabia so perhaps maybe religion wasn't the reason. I mean who knows though. If I had to take a farfetched guess though, maybe he didn't want to go to Italy because of possible hatred from Italian soccer fans (due to WC 2002). He had a young kid back then and probably wouldn't be the best environment to be there. Again just my crazy theory.
if i'm not wrong, i remember LYP made the shush gesture to gattuso in the first leg of the 2004-05 semifinal against milan. maybe he was talking back to an insult made by gattuso and after that he thought going to italy wasn't a good idea. not to mention AJH and perugia case.
I find it hard to believe that a single incident with one player would cause someone to avoid going to a particular league.
JDW and JSR from the match against Team GB in the 75 most memorable sports pics on CNN... http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/29/worldsport/gallery/2012-sports-moments/index.html?hpt=hp_c1
To be fair, the title of the article is "75 Amazing Sports Moments You Missed This Year" - Translation: no on in the U.S. watches soccer . . . [Also, the U.S. didn't have a men's soccer team at the olympics. But still . . . ]
Oh these idiots still talking about shirt sales when they haven't even gotten a single Korean sponsor.
A bit unfair to take away just that from the thread. There are a lot of people in the first page that rate Ji and wonder why he can't get a sniff.
I've seen their opinion of JDW during the Olympics and the beginning of the season and that was enough. This is just a knee-jerk reaction because they've been shit and little more than that.
