I think the owners do have an interest in friendlies and have realized that scheduling is an issue in selling tickets. The NASL doesn't play a lot of weekday games and they want the opportunity to host those friendlies on prime weekend dates as well. I agree that most teams will take a breather and rest players for a couple weeks, while playing one exhibition, maybe two tops. I could see little mini tournaments possibly by some of the more ambitious clubs. Think the Charleston tournament, but in midseason. Invite two or three clubs to play a round robin.

There is also a possibility that Open Cup matches could fall during their season break as well.

You don't even know what a transfer window is my friend. It is for TRANSFERS. Around the world, clubs are free to sign free agents at any time and in many cases take on loan players. Player contracts may be bought and sold only during the transfer windows. FIFA doesn't set these, the leagues/federations do.

You are quite wrong about MLS and its lack of transfer windows. If you did research or even had a passing knowledge of MLS instead of knee jerk contempt, you know that in 2012 the league had two transfer windows for incoming foreign players: January 21 to April 15 and then June 27 to July 27. Once again, this only applies to clubs who are purchasing foreign based players under contract.

Documentation: http://www.mlssoccer.com/2012-mls-roster-rules (Sorry, I like sources other than Wikipedia or a blog)

To get this thread back on topic:

The NASL's babble about the transfer window somehow tying into their midseason break is just stupid. NASL clubs are not going to be buying any players at all and will be selling few, if any.

Cdskou, take your MLS hate over to the MLS forum. Stick to hating the NASL here.

Friendlies don't have to be against English Premier League teams or Championship sides to be useful or attractive to fans, either.

Most NASL teams, given enough lead time and a dedicated Saturday night in July, draw well enough that eventually summer friendlies during that period could be a positive thing and well attended. I hope it happens, but i don't blame any teams who choose not to if they think they'll lose money.

The Rowdies pulling 4k on a weekday night with a month to sell tickets for Bolton should be looked at as a glass half full situation, for example. Did they lose money? Probably quite a bit. But how much? How many more tickets would need to be sold to break even? How can tickets to a summer friendly be worked into the season ticket packs or sold as packs with individual tickets to regular season games, etc?

We also would need to know what teams in different leagues require financially to play these friendlies before we can begin to figure out who would be best to try to bring in.

And remember that some teams have supporters who travel well for their summer preseason tours. Newcastle in Orlando for example drew a decent number of their fans. The key is getting the games scheduled well enough ahead of time so that those fans can add the fixture in their own travel plans.

I'm babbling. Hey what else is new.

I don't disagree with your points. My, and others contention is though, how does playing two "half" seasons within a season add any value whatsoever to the league? We won't know for certain until it plays out, but a very strong logical argument can be shown for it increasing the number of "meaningless" games (defined as games played with no hope for a spot in the Soccer Bowl) for most teams. It's a foreign idea, and not in a good way as far as most opinions I've read. For those two reasons alone I think it's a bust. The only "benefit" that seems to come of it is being able to sign players to "half" season contracts. I know the management of my team liked that particular idea very much. But is that a worthwhile or legitimate enough reason to try something out that fans are likely not to care much for? Guess we'll see.

just and FYI about the cost,

I was told the cost to bring Nottingham Forest over this past summer would have been about $29,000 (that cost being hotel and travel) for the two weeks they were to be in the states. I understand Orlando paid the airfare in tune of $17,000 and the Battery picked up the hotel of about $12,000. That was reimbursed to Orlando and Charleston when Nottingham new owner canceled the tour.

I am pretty sure the last few friendlies the Battery (Sunderland, Bolton, Portsmouth) organized were of a similar price, but working with another club stateside help everyone involved (give the visiting team more than one team to play and the stateside teams can offset the cost by partnering with teams close by.)

All that said, I know the Battery are working now for teams to visit in the 2013 summer. It takes a lot of time and effort to make these friendlies happen. And they typically leave a mid to late July Saturday open on the schedule for a match.

^The multiple team thing makes sense. It would not be hard to imagine the Strikers/Rowdies/OCSC getting together to get one or two teams over for a Florida tour in the summer.

But I'll settle for a Strikers match vs. NPSL newbie "Miami United SC", who claim they will be in MLS in 3 years lol.

Yep, look at how much NFL popularity has dropped in recent years with the Steelers and Giants winning Super Bowls while being 6 seeds in the playoffs. Oh, that didn't happen? Maybe because it's acceptable, and even desirable, in the US sports market.

    Idiot.

Stop comparing NFL to US Soccer now that's idiotic. Tell me how many ties did MLS teams have in regular season?

We will see how many ties NASL will have?

    No, it's a better set-up.

Fans want to see games with wins/losses.

I want to see 1st place team. play 2nd best team. I don't want to see 6th place play 7th place.

I don't understand how some think the playoff system is so much better?

No stupid we are 'Murica argument, we don't do what others do. Except that MLS has been moving towards the world game closer and closer.

You should go tell fans of the Mexican league that playoffs are stupid. See how that goes.

People here LIKE playoffs. You insisting otherwise doesn't change anything.

I still don't understand your disdain for a playoff format. They're a lot of fun to watch imo

I have no problem with playoffs. I have a problem with MLS playoffs, if they had goal line technology and instant replay then ya.

MX league has way better refs than MLS. The problem with playoffs in MLS is bad decisions by bad refs and in soccer a bad decision especially in playoffs and it's over.

Yea because our regular season meant nothing filled with ties and boring games that's why.

Change the structure like they did, meaning less ties and more important games become. Every team fights to be #1.

Oh my bad, i misunderstood. I dunno why I thought you said that at one point, and i guess i just assumed you implied it in the post i quoted.

I don't know, I can't say I hate the MLS playoffs (this is the first year I actually watched any of it tbh), I do think if they are going to incorporate a play-in game they might as well make it 2 legs. (or the aggregate out of 2 games like they have in rest of the playoff games).

Also I'm very supportive of goal line technology, but I think with soccer you have to be careful with instant replay. In some instances it may not be bad, but i think you end up causing more harm than good if you make the game choppy by having too frequent of stoppages for replay purposes. I think there are scenarios where they could possible incorporate it though.

Instant replay would only apply to fouls in box resulting in red cards or PK's.

I do think we should not have had 6 teams out of 8 in the playoffs. 4 would have sufficed and if the league ever expands past 12 teams, say to 14 or more, then add a couple of playoff teams.

But I'm not down with cutting the playoffs entirely, sorry.

Which one is it, Harvey Dent?

You're just all over the f*ckin' place now. Now you're saying you hate MLS playoffs because of the referees. With better refs you'd be fine with the playoffs?

But then you hate playoffs. You'd rather have a split-season, single table with bad refs instead.

And what the hell is this shit about ties? You think NASL's format will produce less ties simply because...... what? Oh, because teams are gonna try harder all season to win games now? That means both teams on the field will try harder right? So instead of a 1-1 draw we might see a 2-2 draw instead?

Of course, for most teams it becomes meaningless midway through each half-season. If there's more winners, that means there's more losers, meaning the gap between the top and bottom grows larger, meaning more teams are out of the running earlier.
