Watch the substitute keeper on this PK - clearly well off the line, and very early. Easy one, right? What would you have done? And of course, please share your reasoning ...
Pro game....? Good save keep... carry on. Heck, even a U19 or HS game I let that roll. Guy is not well off line. He is, at most, one step off the line. And he would have stopped that shot anyway, even if on the line. Dont go looking for trouble. It will find you soon enough.
U19 Tournament final went to KFTM earlier this season. Instructions from the G6 CR: "Two Steps. And then only if they save it." I agree, carry on.
?? It was 4 mini steps, and well before the kick was taken. In the games I do, I stick with the 2 steps -- in other words, with one foot forward, I got nothing, but if the second foot also comes off early, then I have something. Here, for the games I do, I got a retake. In this game, it's a non-keeper dragged in (I gather they had used up their subs before the red?),so he doesn't take the big step a "real" keeper typically does. but without knowing what is typically called in this league, I could argue this one either way.
The center told us flat out that he did not want the keeper called for coming off the line unless it was more than two steps AND the keeper saved it. (Ie if the player hit the woodwork or was off target, let it be.)
You know, I would hate to ruin an awesome moment, and I would hate even more trying to get out of that stadium alive... but if you pause the video at the moment the ball is struck, he looks to be a yard off the line. Sorry Charlie, but for me that's a retake.
Good, we have one referee with some balls. This is a clear infringement and it had an impact upon the game. Plain and simple: Call it and have the kick retaken. Nothing else is acceptable. I had a discussion on this very topic with a US National Instructor, who is also a National Assessor, and a former FIFA Referee. He stated that by not calling this infringement we are allowing the GK to cheat and compromising the integrity of the game.
Well, when your national assessor starts actually making the big dogs stop ALL the infringements in the PA then we can talk. Until then, I see endless clutching/grabbing and all that BS on every corner. That and it does look like the shooter has at least one, if not two encroaching teammates. Doing this sort of an ethnic game...play stands. I like my balls to come home with me.
Can we knock of the whole having the balls to call it bs... Every referee on here has the balls to make a call. There are different interpretations and if you watch the video, there are no complaints from the players. Call the game they expect. In this case, play on.
I suspect that in professional leagues that they have discussions on exactly these kinds of things and what should be called and what should be considered trifling. I don't think it is fair to question the courage of the referees making (or not making) calls like this in the absence of any info on what their instruction/expectations are.
It is clearly an attempt to obtain an advantage by the GK. We re-kick if I have the whistle...and leading up to that call the players should get a sense that I will enforce the Laws so it isn't a surprise.
I am guessing that this keeper came about as far off the line as most referees would allow without retaking this kick. For me the takeaway is to have that distance in mind before the kick is taken.
You are opening up a serious can of worms if you want to go down this road. The LOTG specify a throw-in be taken from within a yard of where it left play. They also specify NO MORE than 6 seconds of possession for the GK.... are you saying that the referees in MLS don't have the balls because they don't enforce these to the letter of the law? With that, I'm out of this conversation.
I'm regretting clicking on this thread. I'd remind everyone, whichever side of the debate you're on, that many of your female colleagues probably wouldn't appreciate this debate (though I know and understand that some accept this sort of language as a metaphor, that feeling is far from universal).
I am not a high level referee or have tons of competitive experience but I counted four steps all off the line. I would re-kick if I had the whistle. When I carry the whistle I try to enforce the rules, I know it's not a popularity contest as every decision I make will have about 50% crowd happy and the other 50% unhappy. There is rarely common ground. In this game, the referee is wearing a microphone so I assume this is relatively high level league in this country and the arena will have security. Call the game as best as possible according to the LOTG and local customs/interpretations. This referee went into the game knowing if he needs to fear for his life and he looks pretty confident he is safe.
For those interested, the actual penalty/DOGSO decision is available here, at 3:28: In real-time, first look, I'm saying red, so I've got no complaints with the call. But when you start to see every angle and analyze all the movements (of the ball and the attacker, primarily), I certainly start to see some element of doubt and can figure out--given his hand signals--exactly what #35 is protesting. It's yet another interesting DOGSO case study.
Right. And you call every 6 second violation, every throw in violation, every violation in the box on a corner. Guessing you dont do many high level games. Uber anal, toilet trained at gunpoint refs give me a headache. They never get that little Law 18. I ma out of this tread.
On any play in which there is an infringement of the Laws and that permits the violating team to gain an unfair advantage, the referee crew should make the call and penalize that team. It depends upon the situation, but this could apply to any of the situations which you have listed.
