the wider problem with wonga is more to do with what is seen as "preying" on people withwhat could be called legalised loan sharking. did you see much problem with newcastle's 20 years of alcohol sponsorship or 8 years of bank sponsorship?
Hmmm, saw this rumor on the BBC page: "Arsenal are set to announce a new kit deal with German sportswear giant Adidas to replace their current agreement with Nike. The Gunners will receive £22m a year, an increase on the £8m a year they earn currently. Full story: The Times"
That would be awesome - an extra 40m a year in sponsorship money, plus whatever extra Emirates is paying for the stadium.
ManUtd is over the hills and away from the pack on commercial deals. I see no end in sight to their hegemony. Unfortunately Arsenal are just far far behind I'm curious what the footballing landscape will be like in 5 yrs commercial, and salary wise.
United are obviously way ahead of everyone. The only hope with them is that their owners drain money from the club, even more than now. Arsenal is decently situated to be in the top tier though. The biggest question will be how will the money be invested. Will it allow us to buy players, or simply catch up to the rest on wages and fees?
Catching up to the rest on wages and being able to spend 15m on players a season is the goal, isn't it? It just seems like we can only do one or the other, but not both.
This looks like a bad deal to me. On the Arsenal website they mention in passing at the end that this deal includes an extension to the stadium naming rights--so am I right in thinking that the stadium naming rights are included in this money? Someone correct me if not, but if naming rights aren't included in these other contracts we're comparing against, we are getting completely ripped off
I'm no expert on shirt deals but it seems like this may not be so hot. Although it's a big increase on our last one, the reason for that is partly because we negotiated too long a term last time. Aren't we possibly doing that again? (assuming that the world of elite football is still on an always increasing curve of sponsorships) p.s. I too am not fond of this particular sponsor, but there are so many other uninspiring ones out there, like gambling websites. I'm resigned to seeing it on the shirt. It's the stadium naming rights that drives me nuts. I continue to call it The Grove every opportunity I have!
Depends on how much stadium naming rights are worth. Typically not more than 2-3 million per year IIRC
when they are broadcasting matches on television, the announcer has to tell you the match is at Emirates Stadium. No one has to tell us Emirates is on is on the front of the Arsenal shirt.
Thanks Prince for that very simple explanation... seems very plausible to me. I assume you're right about stadium naming being way cheaper than shirt naming.
They lose a ton of value after the first go too. I think the point of the naming rights extension is 1) people already widely call it the Emirates, so it makes sense, and 2) it locks our biggest sponsor into a long term relationship with the club. That'll help when we negotiate with them again next time around.
Saw this on FB, no source attributed: " Wenger: "When I arrived clubs were owned bypeople who loved the club. Now it’s a businessmodel."
not sure where else to put this, but gazidis has been made the European Club Association spokesman for UEFA's professional strategy council, replacing david gill. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...on-influential-roles-within-uefa-8368136.html why is it i feel some dread that he will help push through more garbage policies that slowly snuff the life out of the game?
not sure where to put this either but peter hill-wood is in hospital following pneumonia and a subsequent heart attack. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/dec/02/arsenal-chairman-peter-hill-wood
If by chace this were the beginning of the end of PHW's active role on the board, I found myself thinking... there isn't another Hill-wood heir waiting in the wings to takeover his spot on the board right? And even if there was, isn't PHW's share % so small as to be fairly insignificant these days?
What share? You mean the share of money he took from Kroenke? There's only one shareholder left on the board.
