Lots of national press on this story--41 consecutive wins. Kraig Chiles scored eight goals. What do you call that--an octohat?

The Sockers are great to watch, and I'm really happy they are back in the Sports Arena, but where is their worthy competition? After 4 PASL games, their goal differential is 44. The San Diego paper compared Sockers games to Harlem Globetrotters exhibitions against the Washington Generals. Except in this case, the Washington Generals = every other team in their league.

If you win 41 in a row wouldn't you want to play a game that was really a challenge??
Maybe time to look at playing in a different league??

This is a stupid conversation. MISL isn't far enough west. Tell the league to drop their insane league fees and maybe the west would join up.

Good point but still.. 41 wins in a row tells you where is the contest??
and not to demean them or take away their glory because I know a few of the guys on the team and they deserve it for their efforts and strengths however.....

Actually tells me that all the Sockers players have a good thing here. They run the team. All these players could be playing in some city that they don't like just for money instead they are playing in SD for the way of life. 90% of the players are San Diego locals. They can be at home with their families and enjoy where they want to be.

If the finances made sense. Which they don't.

These are businesses. If continuing to run roughshod over bartenders and UPS guys was hurting their business (as the Cleveland Browns' domination of the AAFC became a hindrance after a time), maybe. But it would make zero sense, financially, for the Sockers to go to the MISL at this point in time.

Also, speaking of the streak, I must be missing a few games. I haven't found the perfect accounting of the 41 games, so I'm sure someone can add to what I'm missing:

I know it does not make sense but it is kind of a shame to the team that they are bulldozing over everybody they play and having sensational games where somebody can score 8 goals in a game. Great for them but competition would be nice.
Like I said I know players on that team and I am happy for them but it would be nice for them to play a game or 2 against a team that will give them a challenge. I don't want to darken their limelight by any means. On the contrary CONGRATS to them on their successes.

if they reduced the League fees more teams would come in and they would make up the money in volume with more teams paying the fees

Congratulations to the Sockers, you can only play who you have scheduled and the team has done a wonderful job of beating all comers. However, shame on the league if it turns out that Dallas or one of the more established better teams end up beating the Sockers when their turn comes up later this season. To me, this not the same as scheduling a game so that the home fans can witness and celebrate a milestone acheived. This is the league scheduling the" bum of the month" to insure a record is acheived. As late as the schedule came out, the league knew who the best teams were and from the outside looking in, it appears that the best teams were scheduled around to enable the Sockers to get the record. Again, the team can only play who they have scheduled and based only on the You Tube clip the teams scheduled look to be relatively unskilled. If, however, the Mexico Toros are representative of the skill level available in the league, I appoligize for my misjudgement of the scheduling.

First, congratulations to the Sockers. This is a tremendous accomplishment. You have achieved something that no professional team has ever achieved in any sport.

Second, this streak (which still continues) is a tremendous opportunity to promote indoor soccer. It has already generated a lot of publicity for the Sockers and for indoor soccer, and there is an opportunity for more. If the Sockers win their next eight, the 50th win should generate a lot of publicity.

Unfortunately, some of the people in this thread seem to be channeling Ford Frick, who was the baseball Commissioner in 1961 when Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were challenging Babe Ruth's single-season home run record of 60. The major leagues had expanded the regular season schedule from 154 games to 162 that season. Frick decided that, if Maris or Mantle broke the record after the 154th game, an asterisk would appear by their name in the record book. That diminished Maris' 61st homer to the point where only 23,000 people showed up to Yankee Stadium to see it, when the ballpark should have been full.

I don't think the Sockers deserve an asterisk. They're a great team and have given the sport a shot in the arm and some great publicity. My hat is off to them.

Are you saying the league held Dallas out of the league for two years so the Sockers could get a record?

They've only played four games this year so far and they were against regional teams. It's not like they flew in Ohio and Illinois.

And Tijuana was very strong last year.

The Sockers already beat the best-at-the-time teams like Louisville, Cincinnati, California, and Detroit along the way.

No, I am saying that with a four game goal differential of 44, it does not appear that anybody was falling all over themselves to create a more competitive game for the Sockers. Again, and you would know, if the teams scheduled were at least average in quality relative to the other teams in the league, then I have no issue with the scheduling, not that my opinion matters. In the end, whoever they were playing, it is an accomplishment, unfortunately only marginally more people than are familiar with the Sioux Falls Storm will know about or remember the event.

I am disappointed with the ridiculous margins of victory. Last year Tijuana came to San Diego as the hottest team in the league with Cesar Romero ripping off nine goal games and they lost 9-2. That was a letdown for me because that was a game I had circled on my calendar as one to watch.

If Dallas, Rio Grande Valley, Rockford, Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati, and Las Vegas can't step up it's going to be a very uninteresting season.

Some of you forgot about some serious close calls and come from behind victories, quite a few of which occurred last season when the record became obtainable.
