I'll tell you one thing there, no other league has such a huge discrepancy between the strength of the national team and team and strength of the league as England. Their playing style is just like Paraguay's 14 years ago.
England NT: #6 overall (#5 in UEFA) Premier League: #2 in UEFA Yes, there is some discrepancy, but not really a "huge discrepancy"? I'm sure there are greater and/or similar disparities in the ranking of league versus NT.
Their playing style is like a Minnow's. Did you see them at the Euro's? They were outplayed in practically every match, apart from perhaps Sweden. In every match they had a lot less possession than the opposition. The rankings are a joke. I remember the USA used to be in the top 10 at one point.
What does this even mean? You do realize that the Premiership is chock full of foreign born players? What an awful analogy.
I wasn't making any anology. Just stating something. I live in England an we are constantly fed the notion that the premier league is the best league in the world, no other league compares, you're not a top forward unless you score against a premier league club in the champions league. We're always told that Ibrahimovic is overrated because he never scores against an English club but they will sing the praises of the ultimate overrated striker Eric Cantona. There are people even doubting Messi because he didn't score against Chelsea last year. What a joke. It's the media I have an issue against.
I know, they are painful to watch. But the rankings aren't based on how fun a team is to watch or how much possession a team gets. Nor should they be. They are based on results, so England probably deserves #5 in UEFA. Remember that only 4 UEFA teams reached the knockout stage of both Euro 2012 and WC 2010.
Israel: League is 17th in UEFA and National Team is 35th in UEFA in the FIFA Rankings (although in March 2009 the disparity was in the other direction with the National Team 13th in UEFA and the league 22nd in UEFA for the five seasons ending 2008-2009
Ratings wise I say yes. Liga MX used to be in Telefutura, Univision and Telemundo those 3 networks had a big household distribution. Now they are on Galavision, Azteca America (I guess they have been on Azteca for a long time), Univision Deportes Network, so I assume the ratings have gone to shit resently. Money wise, 83.3 Million per year (I think is actually less) vs ?????? We do not really know how much Liga MX teams get paid for their rights so is hard to compare. If they get average 5 Million per team that is 90 Million per year, so anything than a 4.6 million per team average would mean less money than the EPL (Fall of 2013).
Side Note: FSC has the Champions rights correct? I wonder what will get higher ratings in San Diego, Champions League games (January to May) on Fox Sports or Copa Libertadores for Club Tijuana games (February to May) on Fox Español.
Here in San Diego, Fox Deportes viewership is likely diluted by the Tijuana stations that broadcast plenty of Mexican Football and are available over the air and on local cable systems.
I think the Liga MX broadcasting deals are not always at arm's length, given the cross ownership of the teams and the major media conglomerates south of the border. Ratings wise, the Superclassico drew as many as 2.5M viewers on Univision or Telemundo while the top EPL clashes drew barely above 1M. Some of this is due to the prime time vs. day time differences but most of it is due to the number of the Latinos in the US. Another angle is that the last Gold Cup final (Mexico over the US, 4-2 in 2011) was watched by ~ 8M on Univision and 1M on Fox Soccer (is this related to the Fox Soccer stupidity thread?).
It's probably not related more than it is related. For me, I can watch FOX Soccer in HD or Univision in SD. I know about three or four words and phrases in Spanish. Guess which channel I'd rather watch on? Sure, I'll switch to Univision right after the goals are scored D), but then I'll switch right back. I'd say it's more related to the number of Latinos than anything else. Of course, in some places, Univision is FTA TV. That also may play into the equation a bit.
I can't believe people haven't figured it out. The Mexican government gave Mr. Carlos Slim a license to start a third over the air network in Mexico. Which meant the duopoly of Televisa / Tv Azteca is going to have some competition. And Mr. Slim is going to need programming for his new channel. What better way than the national sport? He buys 30 percent of Grupo Pachuca (Pachuca and Leon). Sells the cable rights to Fox Sports in Latin America and the US rights to Telemundo. But keeps the over the air rights for Mexico. Expect him to buy another team, its rumored Veracruz is going to be bought by his group and reinforced in order to win promotion. Plus when the Pumas contract runs out with Televisa who do you think will be the favored new client for the University? Grupo Carso of course who have given $$$ to the University and Slim's son-in-law was team President when they won back to back titles with Hugo Sanchez in 04., and Vice President of Marketing in his conglomerate. What does Televisa do? They need to protect the rights they have. First they get the likes of Atlas and Atlante to sign long term tv deals with them and they give them advance payments. Thats why Atlas went on a shopping spree over the summer and Atlante got Lavolpe to coach them. Then they need to raise the cash offered to teams when their contracts run out. Expect them to go after TV Azteca teams. How can they get the money though? That brings Univision into the picture. Televisa owns something like 45 percent of the the network but in reality they control it since its their programming that makes Univision work. Without Televisa programming Univision ceases to exists as a major force. They only made money off of advertisement since all the games were over the air or on Galavision. But if they start a new channel, they could join the cash cow of cable tv money. Apparently they asked for a dollar per subscriber which seemed like a lot of money considering Fox and Espn Deportes make a tenth of that. Who knows how much they asked, but it was probably a lot since only Dish Network, Verizon and AT & T have signed on. When Univision (The main network) renegotiates deals with the carriers they'll include UDN into a package. A game of bluff between Univision and Directv, Comcast, and Time Warner. They'll eventually get the channel but I don't know how much they'll pay for it. For now the fans will pay, but the teams will probably get more money off future TV Deals. Meaning better squads and better stadiums hopefully. (Toluca already announced a new 40k stadium) As far as the tv ratings go other than the Superclasico the rests of the ratings are all pretty much the same. I get why the Superclasico ratings went down, Chivas and America have been pretty crappy lately. America seems to have awakened but Chivas is in deep Sh*t.
I have looked for Liga MX ratings, but since most of the games are now on Azteca America, Galavision, UDN, ESPN Deportes and Fox Sports en Espanol they are harder to find. BTW I do believe the Mexico rights for Leon are owned by Fox Sports Latin America. Slim does hold the rights for showing the games on line, probably by America movil. http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/...mexican-soccer-teams-television-rights-090712 BTW Carlos does not own a TV station in Mexico (not a national one) That is the main reason Televisa backed Pena Nieto to block Slim from getting a TV station.
English Premier League expects to receive global television rights fee (including United States) around £5.198 billion ($8.27703 billion) from 2013-14 to 2015-16 season, according to The Swiss Ramble. An average of $2.75901 billion per year. In The Premier League, The Sun Always Shines On TV http://swissramble.blogspot.com/2012/06/in-premier-league-sun-always-shines-on.html In terms of 1st viewing choice for soccer, it's clearly the English Premier League. The Nielsen ratings is larger than MLS.
But as of last year the Liga MX was still bigger than the EPL, so the fight for the #1 soccer league is between Liga MX and EPL (in the USA).
Last season the EPL games averaged 321k on the ESPNs This year MLS games (regular season and playoffs) have averaged 334k on the ESPNs. MLS obviously has a much better time slots. MLS also obviously significantly more sporting competition during its time slots.
The EPL games are never (rarely?) shown on ESPN1. A few of the EPL major match ups did outdraw MLS when one was on Fox (a delayed/rerun ManU-Chelsea 1.0 rating, 2 share) and the other on NBC (live Portland-Seattle .04 rating) by a considerable margin. That's as close to apples-to-apples you'll get.
1) The highest drawing EPL game last season was on ESPN. http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/20...league-u-s-cable-tv-viewership-record/131948/ 2) That more like apples to elephants as a comparison. You could put on a blank screen with the NFL as a lead in and it would draw a decent number. And even with out that obvious variable, using one or two games for your entire sample for a comparison instead of a entire set of complete seasons worth of data on the ESPNs does not make any sense to me. But what ever floats your boat I guess
