I don't think Rafa could emotionally handle being a caretaker and the atmosphere would become difficult. RDM was a caretaker without being called that but he never caused waves. Roman will probably do something foolish with the hope Pep agrees to come next season ... but Pep is too smart to do that.

Yeah, because a man with billions of dollars and team that's hauled in 10 trophies since he bought it in 2003 is foolish.

The prospect of Benitez is a bit nerve-wracking. He's not a bad manager, and I think the fact that he's slightly cartoonish/idiosyncratic makes it easy to poke fun at him. To his credit, some of what he accomplished at Liverpool was very impressive, but he made an awful lot of poor decisions. He brought in quite a bit of dross in his time there, and when we've got so many areas needing an upgrade, it would be quite worrying to see him in charge of any substantial part of a rebuild.

    sums it up for me

I would have just kept RDM on and then made a move for Pep in the summer if a change was really needed

I just do not see the sense in anoter interim Manager

Other than winning the CL that one year, what did he accomplish that was impressive? He had a fluke finish in second place one year - that's it.

He did get to another CL final and given the squad he was working with, that was quite impressive.

He made the final again in 2007. He won the FA Cup.

I'm not sure how much of a fluke the second place finish was either. The spine of that team was really tremendous, and Benitez was responsible for assembling most of those players IIRC. I think he deserves quite a bit of credit for how he utilized Gerrard as well, and for the Gerrard/Torres partnership that was so effective.

do you really want rafa benitez managing our chances in the league? we'll be a mid table team and then well see if pep or falcao or the next hype wants to be associated with our club.

At least arry has had a fairly recent record at getting top 4. Rafa was has been outta the loop for years now, and if you quote any player from inter, they'll tell you hes a ********ing moron.

Our list grows smaller and smaller lads. We should have kept carlo, and we should have kept Robbie. After pep who are we gonna hire, cuz even if we do get him and roman doesnt fire him, does he really seem like a long term chelsea manager?

Pep will always be Barca, especially when Messi, iniesta and co are relatively youngish.

That second place team was a massive fluke. They only finished second because other clubs stopped fighting for a title that was decided and were aided by a ridiculous amount of favorable decisions and lucky goals that season. That's why they slumped to 6th immediately. They were a 4/5th place team in Rafa's time there, and the second place finish was an illusion that masked the same problems they always had.
Also, Avram Grant made the final of the CL.

    ?

I thought it was pretty obvious that I find the prospect of Benitez to be quite worrying. The point of my post was more along the lines of suggesting that he's possibly not always given credit (except by Liverpool fans, who swing way too far in the other direction) for what he has actually achieved.

    BENITEZ APPOINTED

Posted on: Wed 21 Nov 2012
Chelsea Football Club can confirm Rafael Benitez has been appointed interim first-team manager until the end of the season.

The owner and the Board believe that in Benitez we have a manager with significant experience at the highest level of football, who can come in and immediately help deliver our objectives.

The 52-year-old Spaniard is due to meet the players at the training ground in Cobham tomorrow.
