That seems very odd.. Why wouldn't you wait until after the MLS Cup? Surely the MLS Cup teams are going to be waiving players once everything is said and done.

The only thing I can possibly imagine, and this is a long shot, is that with MLS Cup on Dec. 1, there's a penny-pinching, get as many guys off the books in a hurry thing going on.

Who knows, though. MLSHQ is a weird place sometimes.

The article notes that there will be a second waiver draft after MLS Cup for LA and Houston players.

All I can figure, with the Re-Entry draft on Dec. 6th, is that the teams want more time between the drafts to figure out needs. Or there's financial incentives to getting it done early.

separate waiver drafts for separate groups of teams????

    That's the strangest thing ever.

I'm surprised Ole and others haven't come in here with AEG conspiracy theories yet...

Trolling now out of the way...I like Golazo's theory on the early timing. And having split waiver drafts would be a bigger deal if it were actual drafts - but instead, it's going to be two different conference calls. Not worth a fuss. Though you'd hope they adjust the draft order for the second draft based upon who picks up players in the first draft.

i moved Portland's former Left Back Ian Hogg to the Defender's section where he belongs.

gotta be honest, some of these surprise me:

wasn't Gabriel Gomez one of Philly's best players this season?

Corey Hertzog? How do you waive a GA player, who you sent on loan and who did really well, and who will still be under GA and not count against the cap because he hasn't played enough in MLS to graduate GA?

It's not like most teams will pick a player in either waiver draft anyway. I could see at most three players going in both drafts combined (now watch people go nuts and draft all sorts of players this year).

Not too mention, all 19 teams are still participating in order in both drafts. The only reason for two is there may be a handful of players from Houston and LA available. As for the timing, someone else hit the nail on the head; it is to get as mush roster movement down as possible prior to re-entry draft and teams turning focus on players with options and expiring contracts (which end at the end of December).

Actually this all has to be done prior to the re-entry draft as passing on options/renewing contracts is what makes players eligible for that draft.

(Actually, I think that all had to be decided before today's waiver draft, for the same reason, unless they're going to have a 3rd waiver draft sometime this offseason)

This is a good point - so does Hertzog keep his GA status if he is waived but claimed by another team? Also, anyone know when the GA graduates are announced? Seems like teams would want to know that before they finalize waivers, but I haven't seen any reports on this.

it is red bull, only they are stupid enough to waive a guy on a GA contract before he graduates. they also ditched tyler ruthven who seemed to do an okay job during that early season stretch where everybody was hurt and the young guys played ... and he is on a dirt cheap off budget roster contract so waiving him, unless he totally sucks donkey balls, doesn't really help any at all ... it will just leave them with empty off budget roster spots like they had last off-season that they filled with duds like Angulo and Artega.

New York really mailed it in when it came to building depth last season. (I guess that isn't anything new). In addition to the two players that you mention, they also signed Jonathan Borrajo and Jeremy Vuolo from the second divisions of Norway and Finland respectively. They were pretty much doomed to fail from the start also.

While LA's and Houston's cuts will be available at a separate waiver draft, we may need to organize a third for Chivas USA's entire roster.

Yeah, while it's not really been clearly outlined anywhere, my understanding is that players that are not eligible for the re-entry draft have to be waived by today. But if the player is eligible for the re-entry draft, then teams still have up to that draft to try to sign them to a new contract or exercise an option if they have one. As a reminder, players who are at least 23 years old and have at least 3 years in MLS are eligible for the re-entry draft. So technically, today's waiver draft is only for players who don't meet the re-entry draft criteria (and also excluding LA and Houston).

Last year's waiver draft was on Wed Nov 23, 3 days after MLS Cup. And last year's reentry draft was on Dec 5 and Dec 11 (remember, it's two stages). I wonder if this year's reentry draft gets pushed back at all to give LA and Houston more time to do their contract negotiations, or if the first stage will still be the first week of December? In the roster rules on the MLS site, it just says that the reentry draft will be "after MLS Cup".

the guy seemed like a stud central midfielder that scored some 6+ goals ... and who is still under 30. him making 300K seems fair to me.

From my perspective, he didn't really live up to the hype the team generated when they signed him as a box-to-box midfielder.

The Rapids article this morning said it was set for Dec. 6th (not that they couldn't change it between now and then).
