I was wondering with the MLS Draft in Indy (Jan 18) is anybody planning on going, do the supporter groups have a anything planned ( buses met ups etc) . I plan on driving to the event and check it out and would like to meet up with fellow Crew fans. I think the draft is on Jan 18 2013 but I am not sure.

I'm planning on being there. How did the event work in 2007? Do I remember correctly that the FO had people come over on a bus?

I *REALLY* want to say that the bus was nixed due to lack of interest. Bill Archer, did you go? Was that the one where each player posed for a photo with a team scarf, but then immediately had to give it back?

I went, but being in Indy, I don't know how travel plans worked out. For reference, we had the #2 overall pick, then traded it for an unnamed player; who ended up being Andy Herron. We drafted Brad Evans, got our pictures taken with him, received over sized adidas t-shirts, and the cheapest Crew scarf the FO has ever given out.

Why bother? The kids drafted might not even make the roster.

#9 overall pick better make the friggin' roster.

Hoping for a solid striker. Or Jared Watts (M-Wake Forest) if he comes out this year (only a Junior).

One never knows--but with the Homegrown rules most teams will be getting better players *that* way out of college than through the draft.

We ought to replace the departing vets with other vets. We'll probably add a homegrown player or two from among Wiet, Barson, Trapp, or Luthy. We could dump Schoenfeld, George, or Grossman for a rookie but odds are they aren't any better. Especially in a pool that is depleted by other team's homegrown signings. MLS isn't the NFL where the draft is the only source of cheap labor and the top draft picks are better than most vets at their position.

I initially miss read your post but for the time being the draft is still a very important way to get players. Look at this years rookie of the year list? For now the draft still has an important part to building a team.

For ever Andy Najar there are Scair Hot, Cobo Navas, Giorgi Chirgadze, Donny Toia, Josh Janniere, Josue Soto, Matt Kassel, and heck Aaaron Horton. Even guys like got some playing time like Bryan Levya have been cut.

That's certainly true this year, the only caveat being that at least a few of them are getting winks and flashes of leg from Europe.

Maybe the best player who'll be coming out is that Gyasi Zardis (sp? in no mood to go look it up) who is - of course - an LA homegrown. Ridiculous speed, vision and ball control, and a freakin rocket launcher for a right leg. He just crushes it. Turned down six figures from The Gals a year ago, then spent last summer training with Liverpool. LA will take another shot at him but it will take big, big money, but his father may have the last word and he wants his kid to graduate.

Of interest to us is the kid from Indiana, Erik Zavalata (again sp?) who's a real beast and supposedly Chivas, RealSalt and CBus all could file homegrown claims since he's spent time with all three, although I recently read that there are some technicalities that may keep Chivas from filing.

Unfortunately, Scott Caldwell from Akron U qualifies as a New England homegrown and there's no chance Heaps will pass.

The kid we all need to beg Santa for is Walker Zimmerman, a back line defender from Furman, who'll almost certainly come out even though he's only a sophomore. The kid is huge, fast, tough as nails and can get forward.

On the bright side, since Porter is gone I have to believe it's more than likely Wil Trapp will come out this year and not even Columbus is dumb enough not to grab him with the rock-solid homegrown claim they've got. The only question will be whether they try to lowball him and piss him off. Bliss has to drive up 71 and make the kid a fair offer.

There was talk from the FO to the SG about some type of organized trip to the draft. It is kind of difficult since its 3 hours there and 3 hours back on a thursday night.
Nothing definite but we are doing logistics to see pricing, availability and interest.

I would be interested. I would imagine I have 2-3 friends who would make the trip as well.

I went in 2006(?) and it was fun, if not aggravating. Got my picture taken with Brad Evans. We traded the #2 overall pick to evil Chicago Fire and they selected Bakare Soumare while we got Andy Herron. One of the Fire fans in attendance had a Herron jersey on, which he turned inside out upon hearing the news. In retrospect that exchange worked out for absolutely no one.

We took a time out before our 2nd round choice, and then picked Evans.

It's fun to go if you want to see all the MLS coaches, front office people and media in person. Also, support your team, and all that.

Zimmerman has a lot of potential, but he isn't a guy that will come in and play right away. Still needs to work on being consistently "in the zone" and not having mental slip ups, and he needs to get stronger to play in MLS.

Sounds like a great kid, though; I firmly believe he has the work ethic to reach his full potential.

FYI - Since the supporters summit is not taking place at MLS Cup this year it may be taking place at the draft, that's the discussion I heard from league officials a few weeks ago.
