Switch Simpson with Anita and I like that formation a lot. But I like the idea of Jonas as the more defensive CM and Ferguson whipping in crosses from the left.

More subplots to this one than an episode of the Wire. Both managers taking on their old clubs. Ba, Carroll and Nolan all facing their former clubs. I really, really want to see a good display today.

    Howay the Lads.

That's going to be a bigger loss than some people realize with Jonas going off with a knock.

Have to think that tackle on Cabaye was targeted. With his hamstring problem, have to think they decided to give it a try and knock him out of the game.

Announcers just reported Jonas taken to the hospital to have scans over fear of broken leg.

How about someone other than Cabaye take a FK or a CK. He's had at least 10 combined in this game and none have led to goals. In fact I don't think Newcastle have scored off of one of his CKs all season. Time to try something else.

An Allardyce team kicking a more skillful side into submission?

    Well I'll be...

Seriously, I see Cabaye step up for a CK and start to wonder how *insert any team played this season here* is going to get the ball back up the field.

Well it's been coming and we finally get a result that reflects how shit we've been. Got to be said that we're a shadow of the team that finished fifth last year.

Squad's too thin to compete on multiple fronts and expect results.

Barfa's just not there right now. Combined with only one functioning striker, no midfield "depth" with the gritty quality of Guthrie and Raylor, a defense that is changing game-to-game... I'm sure that if we had a steady lineup maybe two or three results would have improved on this season and we'd be in that top five conversation.

    Thx,

    Jay!

Far too many limited players in our squad. Obertan, Marveaux, Gosling, Perch, even Gutierrez to a degree can't seem to produce consistently. We're in desperate need of a creative player or two. Sick of hearing people say we need a back up left back or other such nonsense, our first team isn't good enough for us to be thinking about wasting money on reserve team players.

So I'm sitting there today and watching the US v Russia game and something kept eating at me. Couldn't put my finger on it, and then it hit me. The US was flooding the box on the attack. I was watching the US cross a ball into the box and there were 3 or more players waiting on the cross and another 2 or 3 players waiting on the ball at the top of the box. On Sunday, there were only 2 players time and time again waiting on crosses or passes in the box; 3 if you count the random player who sometimes dribbled into the box to cross or pass. I watched the US and wondered what would/could have happened Sunday if Newcastle hadn't seemed so withdrawn and afraid to attack, even when down. Newcastle can't rely on lucky strikes (SAMeobi off Cisse) or individual moments of great play (Cabaye from HBA, HBA, or Ba from Krul). Newcastle is about as dangerous on set pieces as a kitten against a pack of mastiffs. The announcers time after time commented on Newcastle having very few options in the box waiting for balls or lack of dangerous set pieces. I don't know what's wrong this season with AP and the team, but they need to fix it soon or else mid table at best is calling the club's name.

For a set piece from a little distance, seems like the only move is to bring up Willo, lob it to him so he can head it down. Usually all the others are marked so we never get a strike off.

With RyanTaylorOverTheWall out, we need someone who can unleash to take those short-distance strikes.

We'd also be better served to take some kicks/throws quicker. Maybe have the forwards just start running towards goal on takes from a certain area on the field.

    Thx,

    Jay!

Set pieces is a problem area for us, both defensively and when we get them. Obviously the Man Yoo game and the 5under1and game come to mind when considering goals we've conceded off a set piece. As for attacking ones... I think Saylor's header against Chelsea at the back end of 2010-11 is the last time we scored off one. I'm not sure how much time we spend working on it but its obviously not enough.

We just look very static, as you rightly say a lot of the time there's not a great deal going on in the box when we have the ball in dangerous areas. Worse than that though there's not a great deal of people giving options. I'm sick of seeing HBA take on a few players and then left with nobody in space to slip a pass to. I think the commentator on this game was criticising HBA for cutting back when he had the chance to cross, but in his defence he had no real options. Another bugbear is that when the opposition double marks HBA nobody seems to realise that means more space for them, and that actually that's a positive for us if we use it the right way. Too often we look like a team from a high school with one really good player... we pass it to him and think "go on do something special". The threat on the left side generally comes from Santon, but he usually finds the same problems when he gets the chance to cross.

Cisse was a master at finding space last year, I know defenders are going to pay him closer attention but it's gone out the window and most of the time he just runs thoughtlessly into an offside position. Cabaye sits too deep this season, which is a shame because when he gets past the forwards he can find himself in dangerous positions (think Sunderland and Liverpool). Look at Nolan... he gambles on being in the box and has a habit of being in the right place at the right time, as was the case on Sunday.

Ba's been dropping deep to pick up the ball too, which just shows how deep our midfield is, and how shit the service has been.

I'm hoping Tiote coming back makes a big difference against Swansea, it should give Cabaye more licence to get forward and be threatening around their box. Given the stop-start nature of Tiote's season though I'm not pinning all our hopes on him. Plus I think Cabaye pulled out of the French game last night so I'm not even sure if he'll be available.

I wonder how dangerous our right side would be if we could play Santon or had a Debuchy playing off HBA instead of Simmo.

By the way, was wondering if anyone else noticed Obertan ignoring Santon and not passing him the ball. After Santon's bad pass into the stands and then on Santon's first overlap where he took the ball off Oberran and moved to space because Obertan had dribbled into multiple defenders and Santon saw the error in that and took the ball to space instead. Anyways after that Obertan never even looked his way or passed to him after that. It was like looking at a petulant child not getting their way and having a fit on the pitch.

On corners, why even attempt sending the ball in for no one or, as has become standard, hitting it so short it barely makes it into the box before a defender clears it? We should just play a quick pass and restart the offense like Barca does so often.

That's not the English way Jared, you have to carefully send your centerbacks into the box so they can engage in some disturbing homo erotic jostling and shirt pulling. You then hammer the ball in the general direction of your tallest players, which will usually result in hitting the first defender or giving away a free kick for the aforementioned shirt pulling. Its one of our finest traditions.
