I put in my thoughts about Kreis around the time that thread had come out in the summer I think it was? Overall I feel that Kreis is a good coach, but you can tell he's very new at it. Right now, I think there's two things holding him back. The first is refusing to change tactics. He's easily out coached because he puts out the same formation and the same game plan. If he were to occasionally switch it out and do something a little different against teams that are better than us at breaking down the diamond, we'd look a little better, I think. The second thing is the fact that he has the 'starting 11' + 3 subs and that's it. The only time we ever saw change was when there was an injury. That to me breeds complacency. What was the point of the starters, or bench/fringe players motivation to do better? You're not going to force your way into the starting 11, and you're not at risk of losing your starting spot, so where's the motivation to stay on top of your game?

I think eventually he'll learn that he needs to do things a little differently to be successful. Will that be a change for 2013? I honestly don't know, but I would think at some point he'd see that you can't always keep the same exact tactics and be successful.

It'll be interesting to see how Kreis handles this potential turnover. If you remember, we haven't always played the diamond formation. There were times, in the 2007/8/9 years where he would legitimately change our formation in an attempt to have better success. The formation that worked best with this group, at that time, was the diamond. We killed teams with that set of players and that style of play. We didn't win a lot of trophies, but we were a damn good side (read Arsenal)

Now the question is, does he stick to that diamond, or does he try a different formation (with similar overall tactics) once we have new personnel? Along those lines, does he only look for players that will fit that diamond formation or will he pursue the best overall players and then make changes?

Both options have their pros and cons. Both will be under heavy scrutiny from people on here and fans in general who are sick of seeing the same old (or who want that same old should we suck in a new style).

The approach I would take would be to find the best players available and then evaluate in the preseason what is going to be the most effective style. Say we go out and sign 3 or 4 guys with incredible speed. Is the diamond what we should use to exploit these guys talents? I never want to go away from being a possession oriented side, but that doesn't mean you have to play a diamond and tight formation. Maybe an introduction of legitimate wing player from our midfield could be a possibility...?

If Kreis sticks to his formation, even with new guys, and it starts to fail - then he very much should start to be under question in terms of his position as coach. I don't think you fire him unless he has a team that is TFC epically bad, though, at least not next season. However, this next season should be one in which his job security comes back into play (or is solidified for a year or two more) depending purely on how he handles the season.

The acquisition of David Viana partially answers this question. Here's a kid who was available, with an intriguing skill set, a ton of upside, and priced right. But one thing he's not is a tight diamond guy. In fact, when I interviewed him he told me that he's never seen a formation like RSL's (for those considering going back to the interview in question, that quote is on the cutting room floor - couldn't work it into the article and have it make sense). So he's one data point that suggests Kreis is willing to go after the best players available and then either mold them to his plan or adopt a new plan. There are probably data points that show differently.

I look at it this way: If you consider a football team, they usually look for QB's who will fit their system. If that QB doesn't work out, they will adapt the system to fit the better QB. Look at Utah: They became a pro-set team because of Wynn - now that he's gone and Wilson's the man, they are quickly going back to the spread because that's what Wilson is.

One more thing: No matter what formation RSL trots out, I can pretty much guarantee that Kreis will never change his defensive philosophy...everyone defends, works for each other, and covers a lot of ground. And I doubt many would argue because RSL's generally been quite good on that side of the ball for years, regardless of personnel.

Wants to be on the west coast. Sounds like he'll magically end up in LA. But hey maybe we can win the lottery then trade him to Seattle for a ball bag and a 3rd round pick.

I agree totally, but it would be interesting to see KB's or Alvarez's market value....just a thought.

KB isn't leaving this off-season. I'd wager my life on that one

Nor do I want him to...but since we were discussing off-season moves, dp's and player values against the salary cap, I thought the idea of looking into trade/cash value of our two d-mids and adding a young guy to an aging line up would be a relevant part of the said discussion. Purely speculation, my friend.

KB is probably a no brainer to stay.

I love going to the Town Hall meetings to listen to Bill and Garth talk about the team.

It blew my mind a couple of players that they mentioned were close to, understanding every player has a price, untouchable.

The defense is pretty solid but picking up a player like Mobi might make a deal for someone like Olave more likely. I think you could get a pretty good midfielder or forward for a player like Olave.

I wish I could've gone to one of the Town Hall meetings. I would've liked to have heard the list of players you mention above.

I too wish I was there...and we are all on a "I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you" status?

I'm hearing the same rumors...don't know anything more definitive right now.

Somebody who was at the town hall meetings please do me a favor: Boardmail me as much of the "don't repeat" stuff as you can remember and I'll try to put some pieces together on these rumors...I would have heard it myself (I am a STH with 4 seats) but I couldn't make it to the town hall meetings as I've been out of town. Thanks.

Yeah, umm, same here. I need to debunk some rumors, so go ahead and CC me on IBIK's boardmail. Thanks.

That could be an interesting move.

Espindola is one of our only good forwards (Not that he's perfect) and links up well with Sabo.
We can't just give that away for nothing.
What could the union give in return?
    Ideas?

my initial thought is to hate this idea
however, it makes sense. If Javi is out, we could use a playmaker. Hell, even if Javi isn't out, we could use someone else out there who isn't so slow the grass grows on one end of the pitch before he gets there.

A part of me always did like Adu. I think it'd be somewhat of a gamble, but he's still young and if he's willing to put in the effort he could wind up being good. Although I think if we were to trade Espindola for Adu, I'd want another player, or allocation in addition.

Adu and allocation money for Espy would make sense.
Espy's contract is like a third, if not less, of Adu's. We'd need help to buy that cap hit down

For me it's JackMac or bust if we're talking about any trade that involves Philly.

Adu is a LOT more expensive than Espy. And Jack isn't half the striker Espindola is.

How about Jack McInterny and Michael Farfan?
