Last week MISL Director of Officials Ryan Cigich directed a phone conference of league announcers to go over the rules to help broadcasters call the game with semi accuracy. Years ago, when traveling on the road our van personnel consisting of Coach Tozer, Tom Wynn, Bryan "Moose" Koch, Larry Sayles and I used to play a game trying to stump each other with rules questions.

Here is how the game works. Over the course of the season, I will post 20 rules questions and provide the correct answer the following day. If you anwser incorrectly, you will be issued a blue card. Once you receive three blue cards you are ejected from the game! If you call the league office for clarification or I detect you have received a copy of the league rules you will be issued a yellow card. The top four players will make the playoffs (1 v 4) (2 v 3) and the eventual champion will receive a Tim Tyma autographed blue card.

Question #1. On a goalkeeper distribution restart, the referee hands the ball to the gk and blows the whistle to signal the timekeeper. The timekeeper shall start the clock:

    A) When the referee hands the ball to the GK
    B) When the referee blows the whistle to signal the timekeeper.
    C) When the ball leaves the penalty area.
    D) When the ball is touched by another player after leaving the penalty area.

    GOOD LUCK!

I always thought it as A.

Does anyone know what happened to Tim Tyma, he left the Syracuse game last week in the middle of the 3rd quarter.

    I like your rules challenge.

    But that is too easy!

Try this one on for size:

Chicago @ Rochester. Chicago defender #2 kicks the ball from his defensive zone so that it hits the stadium score board. The referee stops play ruling that Chicago committed a superstructure violation.

Question 1: Where is the next free kick taken from?
    a. The 1st red spot
    b. The top of the arc
    c. The yellow line
    d. The spot below where the ball hit the score board

Then during the period before the next free kick Chicago sends 3 players off the field as part of a line change. This is the first such occurrence of the game.

Question 2: How many players may Chicago have on the floor at the time of the next free kick?
    a. 3
    b. 4
    c. 5
    d. 6

Question 3 (short answer): What other action should the referee take, if any, before the free kick?

    I think it's C

    Question 1: A
Question 2: A (w/ the other three behind the dashes)
Question 3: Make sure the defensive players are positioned far enough away, blow the whistle, back away

    To answer USSf questions:
On a superstructure violation a free kick will be awarded to the opposing team at the shoot out mark nearest to the yellow line to where the ball was last played.

The second and third questions were too vague:

A minimum of four players must be on the field. Did chi call a timeout? Did the ball leave the field of play? Etc. etc.etc

From where it was last played? I've seen refs put the ball on the yellow line nearest to the suprstructure.

So I don't leave everyone hanging before I jump out of this thread... here are the answers.

Question 2: How many players may Chicago have on the floor at the time of the next free kick?
    a. 3
    b. 4 (When a player leaves the field during a violation no player may return or be replaced until the ball is back in play. In this case having 3 players leave the field would mean they could only have 3 players on the field until the restart. But, by rule a team must have a minimum of 4 players on the field at any time, so the referees must allow one player back on the field so they have the minimum of 4 players.)
    c. 5
    d. 6

Question 3 (short answer): What other action should the referee take, if any, before the free kick?
The referee should issue a bench warning for illegal substitution to the scorekeeper and ensure the warning is announced over the PA system. If it occurs again, the team shall serve a 2-minute bench minor.

The shootout mark is on the yellow line, so that is correct. But you answer is more specifically correct because it must be on the mark rather than at any point along the line.

The rest of the question are the facts as stated. But no time out called and the ball had not left the field.

USSF REF has privately indicated out of fairness to the group he will not participate in the game due to him being an MISL Rules "expert". So let's put him to the test with this one..... for USSF REF ONLY..... please answer the following question:

    TRUE OR FALSE?

All overtime periods in the MISL will now be referred to as "SUDDEN VICTORY".

What you failed to tell us was how many players were on the field at the time of the shift change i was assuming 2 players were still on the floor , so those 3 players needed to come back into the game
