Sorry for the three-day delay on this one, but I was on the road this week and didn't have access to my game notes. 3/28/82: The Comets won for the first time ever at Kansas Coliseum, 6-5 over the Wings in a Sunday matinee before 7,737. Craig Stahl scored the game-winner with just :03 left in regulation to avert OT in the first day game victory in team history. Yilmaz Orhan had his 4th hat trick at a Comet and Kevin Handlan had 2 assists in what was Mark Frederickson's first game as a Comet.

A day late again with this one, sorry--4/2/82: The K.C. Comets finally solved the Slobo Ilijevski and the St. Louis Steamers and defeated them for the first time ever, 4-2 at The Arena in St. Lou. Slobo, however, was credited with one of the Steamer goals (on an own-goal deflected off a Comets player), becoming the 2nd MISL goalie to score a goal (sort of). Mark Frederickson scored his first goal as a Comet, helping to give the Comets back-to-back road victories for the first time ever, even though St. Louis outshot them 54-30. Great crowd of 16,820 at what was then (shamefully) known as The Checkerdome.

4/6/82: The Comets failed in their first attempt at three straight road wins, falling to the Memphis Americans 6-5 at Mid-South Coliseum, before 6,746 Memphians. The Americans were led by Stan Stamenkovic with 2 goals and an assist and Helmut Dudek with a goal and 2 helpers, and Memphis scored five of their goals in the 4th quarter to overcome a 4-1 Comets lead and outshot the Comets 73-58. Val DeSouza scored his 12th and final goal as a Comet that night.

4/8/82: The Comets suffered the first overtime loss at home in team history as Kim Roentved of the Wichita scored 13:33 into OT to give the Wings a 3-2 win at Kemper Arena in front of 9,842. "The Rocket" scored the first goal of the night as well, and Norman Piper had the other tally for Wichita.

4/10/82: In their final appearance ever at Kemper Arena, the Denver Avalanche gave up 4 unanswered goals to the Comets after taking a 1-0 lead and KC won 4-1 before 11,055 fans. It was also the Comets' final win ever vs. Denver, who folded following the '81-'82 season and eventually morphed into the Tacoma Stars in '83-'84.

Captain, my captain--thanks so much for posting this! This might well be the Comets equivalent to the Zapruder film...

30 years ago today, 4/15/82: The K.C. Comets knocked off the Memphis Americans 6-3 before 8,237 at Kemper Arena. Mike Bakic scored his final MISL career goal, and Len Salvemini tallied for the final time as a Comet.

25 years ago today, 4/15/87: In what had to be the weirdest/oddest/strangest game in Kansas City Comets history, the L.A. Lazers prevailed 3-2 in triple-OT before 9.471 exhausted (and disappointed) fans at Kemper Arena. The game was tied 2-2 with 4:53 left in the 1st quarter, then there were five periods of scoring silence before the Lazers' Chris Chueden nailed the game-winner on his 2nd goal of the night on the power play @ 1:31 of the 3rd overtime. Comets goalie Alan Mayer was called for a handball outside the box by Esse Baharmast eight seconds before the game-winning goal. It was the first triple-OT and 2nd-longest game in Comets history (91 minutes, 31 seconds). I, personally, was NOT pleased...

30 years ago today, 4/17/82: In the home finale of their inaugural season, the Comets lost a tough one to the Phoenix Inferno, 2-1 in OT before the largest crowd of the season at Kemper Arena, 16,255. Neither team scored in the 1st half, and Peter Millar of the Inferno scored the game-winning goal 6:15 into overtime.

30 years ago today, 4/23/82: The Comets paid their final visit to Denver's McNichols Arena and came up empty for the third time in as many attempts, losing to the Avalanche 8-3 before a respectable crowd of 8,128. Iubo Petrovic scored twice for KC, including his final MISL career goal. Tim Walters had 2 goals and 2 assists for Denver.

30 years ago today: 4/24/82: The 1981-82 season mercifully came to an end for the Comets as they lost 5-3 to the Phoenix Inferno before 7,027 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Kevin Handlan scored 2 goals while Mark Kerlin scored twice for Phoenix. Joe Filla scored his final goal ever as a Comet, and it was also the final game in a Comets uniform for Iubo Petrovic, John Dolinsky, Dave Sarachan, Mike Bakic and Owen Rose as the Comets finished their first (and worst) season 14-30 in 6th place in the MISL West. Better days lay ahead after this...

Better days, indeed, for the Comets/Attack/Comets,
for John Dolinsky (coaching stints in the AISA/NPSL)
and for Dave Sarachan (coaching in MLS).

    They're baaaaack!
11-6-82: The Comets went above .500 for the first time ever in winning their 1982-83 home opener 7-4 over the Golden Bay Earthquakes before a packed house of 16,166 at Kemper Arena. Zoran Savic had the second 4-goal game ever in Comets history, and Charlie Carey and Greg Makowski scored in their first game as Comets. The game also marked the debuts of Elson Seale, Billy Gazonas, Tim Clark, Stuart Lee, Greg Villa and Bob Bozada as part of Pat McBride's newly-overhauled Comets roster in his first full season as head coach. Chris Dangerfield scored twice for Golden Bay.

I was hoping to post something here about an early 1982-83 season Wings-Comets match until I looked at the game results from that year. Amazingly, the Wings and Comets did not play until February 1983! You'd think that by then that they'd have played multiple times what with the geographic distance. (For the record the Comets savaged the Wings 8-2 at Kemper.)

‎30 years ago today, 11-12-82: The Comets lost an overtime heartbreaker 7-6 to the Stallions before 7,553 at The Aud in Buffalo. It was heartbreaking because K.C. was 43 seconds away from a victory when Mike Lashchev tied the game late in the 4th quarter to send it to extra time. A mere 40 seconds into the overtime session, Germain Iglesias (no relation to Julio) won it for Buffalo. Elson Seale scored twice (his first goals as a Comet), as did Stuart Lee (his first MISL career goals) and Billy Gazonas added his first assist/point as a Comet, but K.C. went 0-for-6 on the power play.

11-13-82: The Comets paid their first visit ever to Chicago Stadium and lost to the Sting 6-4 in front of 8,111. Greg Villa scored his first goal as a Comet and Tim Clark added his first assist/point as a Comet. Ironically, four of Chicago's six goals were scored by future Comets Gordon Hill, Tim Twellman, Tasso Koutsoukos and Charlie Fajkus.

11/19/82: The Comets paid their first visit to San Diego Sports Arena and defeated the Sockers 6-3 in the first-ever meeting between the teams in front of 7,792. In a penalty-filled match, KC scored three power play goals and were led by Zoran Savic's 2 goals and 1 assist. The Comets also snapped Juli Veee's personal 43-game MISL streak in which he had a goal or assist. Losing goaltender for the Sockers was a guy named Alan Mayer. The Comets would not taste victory at San Diego again for another five years.

11/27/82: The Comets concluded their 2nd-annual American Royal Rodeo-induced road trip with a 1-3 record after losing to the Cleveland Force 6-3 at Richfield Coliseum in front of 8,691. Future Comets Keith Furphy and Louie Nanchoff each had two goals for the Force and goalkeeper Cris Vaccaro notched the first of his many career wins vs. KC. Billy Gazonas knocked in his first goal as a Comet.

11/28/82: The St. Louis Steamers continued their early ownership of the Comets with their 5-3 win at Kemper Arena, in front of a near-capacity crowd of 15,298. Jeff Cacciatore scored a hat trick and Sam Bick added 2 assists for Team Steam, which was 1-6 vs. KC to that point and 4-0 at Kemper. Bob Bozada scored his first and only goal in a Comet uniform in what turned out to be his final MISL career goal.

12/4/82: Before the 7th-largest home crowd in team history (16,266) the Comets defeated the New York Arrows for the first time ever, 7-4 at Kemper Arena. KC was led by Charlie Carey's hat trick, while Yilmaz Orhan added a goal and 2 assists and Clive Griffiths scored his first goal in a Comets uniform. The Comets managed to hold "The Lord Of All Indoors" Steve Zungul to just two goals and Shep Messing was the losing goalkeeper in what only the third time the Arrows had lost two straight regular season matches as members of the MISL.

I guess it was a mistake, but I have a league media guide that says the Comets capacity was 15,786 and one year they averaged 15,786 (I think that was the number) so for years I went around thinking they sold out an entire season.

The capacity number fluctuated from year-to-year, but was always above 16,000. In 1983-84, they sold out 15 of 24 home dates, which was the closest they came to selling out an entire season.

12/8/82: The Comets lost to the Golden Bay Earthquakes for the first time, 6-4 at the Oakland Coliseum in front of the 5th-smallest regular season crowd in team history, 2,819. GB jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st quarter, getting two goals from Tony Crescitelli and two from Godfrey Ingram, the first of many he would score against KC over the next decade. Wim Suurbier of the Quakes scored the first and only goal of his MISL career and GB also got an assist by some guy named Jan Goossens. Yilmaz Orhan had two goals for the Comets.
