I saw this article about Canada having it's own D2, what are the implications for NASL: Forging a unified approach to player development by Canada's three Major League Soccer clubs? A national Division 2 league? A national curriculum for provincial soccer associations to follow? Fonseca also said he believes that a lower tier national league in Canada is feasible. "We need to discuss how exactly it's going to be done and once we put all the things together and speak to the people in charge, we'll see how fast we can do that." A Canadian only D2 league won't be happening anytime soon. The most that the CSA may do is in D3 with the eastern CSL league, creating a western division and making a national D3 CSL. Canadian pro sports fans want their teams to be in a league that includes US teams.
I dunno, anyone up there lamenting the 90s demise of the Shreveport Pirates, Memphis Mad Dogs, Las Vegas Posse etc. in the CFL? lol
Yeah, that was a wierd experiment the CFL did with having US teams in the league. I guess the CFL is the exception with their 100 year history in Canada. We had a supposed D1 Canadian Soccer League for 6 years from 87-92 which was a cool league but it didn't last, didn't increase its attendance and interest enough over the years. In the article with Fonseca about a possible D2 league in Canada he did'nt even mention FC Edmonton who is doing more for Canadian players than the MLS clubs are, who barely have any Canadian players on their teams. Edmonton will be going back to more Canadian players this year I think like their first year in the NASL as opposed to last season where they had more imports.
He was pointing out an exception to the statement. The Stallions did well during the experiment before it was simultaneously ended with the Ravens coming to town.
