Just announced during a press conference. Preston Burpo and Adam Rotchstein are also no longer with the club. According to Saputo, him and Marsch did not share the same philosophy for the club.
http://www.soccerbyives.net/2012/11/marsch-steps-down-as-montreal-impact-head-coach.html What the heck? I thought he did a pretty good job considering they were an expansion team...
Hopefully we get the full details of what happened soon. I wonder if Saputo got some ex-Serie A coach to go along with his ever increasing number of Italian players...
I thought they did better with their style of play than with the results. But, if it's an ex-Serie A coach, I'd like to see the experiment. Jesse will find a gig soon enough.
Strange move. They had a decent first year. They had a decent foundation to build upon. I'd really Luke to know the reasoning behind this.
Naw, it's fairly predictable for Joey Saputo. From a pure entertainment standpoint it's good for the league: where TFC is just a never ending Gong Show, IMFC have been just as unstable and dramatic but occasionally successful. It'll always be fun!
You always wish to have a coach that's going to be here for the long run, but most fans in Montreal could see that Marsch would get fired eventually. He just didn't fit with the players the organisation were bringing. They had to trade players like Braun and Wahl mid-season so he would stop playing them so much. Making Patrice Bernier sit on the bench for most of the early-season, when he ended up being the player of the year and getting praise from Henry also does not make you look very smart. You can't put a kick and run coach with guys like nesta and di vaio and expect them to be happy.... I like Marsch as a person but I think this is a good decision for the long-term.
That's interesting, I didn't know he was sitting Bernier early. In the few games I saw he looked like quite a player.
Seems Montreal want to take a page out of the TFC and Metrostars playbook of having extreme roster and coaching turnover every year. That always works.
They already announced that the core of the team is returning. This decision didnt only come from saputo and marcsh. A lot of european players were clearly unhappy with Marcsh style and him leaving the organisation was going to happen one way or the other. I know that for a lot of people that didn't follow this team closely, getting 12 wins in your first season (the most ever by any canadian team) seams very good. There's still a lot of people in MTL that feels like Marsch cost us a playoff spot by making bad player decisions and sticking with his 4-4-2 that wasn't working at the beginning of the season. I hope coaching change won't happen every year but I can't say I'm unhappy with this one...
Which begs the question why was he hired in the first place? Did Saputo an Co. not see him play; they had to have known what he was about.
Montreal has a core? I see some decent domestic players, some journeyman, and some credentialed but over-the-hill imports. Di Vaio, Nesta, and Corradi are 36. There just doesn't seem to be all that much to build around long-term.
Marsch guided that team to a quite successful first year in MLS. He put together a really decent foundation. Montreal could have been a legitimate playoff side next year. Now they're going to blow it up. And apparently they're going to do that for no good reason at all. This is just reckless stupidity.
That's a total cluster******** if that's the case. They hire a guy that's going to be work hard/tackle hard and being direct over more creativity, then decide to trade away his guys and sign players who don't fit?
Felipe (22), Wenger (21), Valentin (21) are good young players. Of course we lack depth, we are just an expansion team, but the team hasn't hinted to any major roster turnover ala TFC like a lot of people on this board are trying say. If anything, they let Marsch go to get a coach that fits better our current roster and where they want to go in the future.
I do agree with some posts here that the decision to hire him in the first place wasn't a good one though. I think they wanted someone that knew the league to start the team but realised through the season that their philosophy didn't fit.
Hum, many people talks here about the Impact like they never see a game of this club... -First of all, for the core, we have players like Felipe, Wenger, Valentin, Camara, Iapichino -For the next 3-4 years we have Ferrari, Bernier, Perkins -For the locals we just have Ouimette for now, but the academy just started -With guys like Nesta and Di Vaio I think we have more chance to brings some young talent and if the experiment with this guys is successfull I think it will be more easy to bring DP here in the future ... Thats for our roster Now to people that compare Montreal with TFC, I just want to say that we did better in our first season than Toronto in 6 season, with highest paid DP there. Also for the owners, TFC are the property of MLSE that also own many sports properties, here in Montreal the owner have only this club and he care about his team Finally, for people thats said we did well in our expension, I agree, but this doesn't mean that we can't decide to move in an other direction with the staff, we'll see what happends next year!
Montreal should've known what they we getting when they hired him in the first place. And judging by what the Montreal fans said here yes he made some mistakes but isn't that expected with a rookie head coach with an expansion team? At least now they fan find a coach that is on the same page with the front office. And I think Marsch won't have trouble finding another job in the league.
Pat Onstad knows the league very well, from both a playing and an assistant coaching standpoint. Was there a reason I have forgotten that ruled him out?
I think he did a good job with what he had, but I had thought from the beginning that he was the wrong man for the job, for what that's worth.
