I still think the L1 clubs come in too late. I'd like it better if everyone was on equal ground but I know the way it is now is the only way to keep this competition alive.

always glad to see sainté get through, the same way the aztecs were very concerned about the continued existence of tlaxcala. guignol needs derbies the same way huitzilopochtli needed human sacrifice.

this is always the case for french domestic cups and has been at least as far back as 1964 which is the oldest edition i've ever looked into.

how come there isn't just one cup, has the french federation considered getting rid of coupe moustache or combining the competitions?

the fed only runs the coupe de france, the coupe de la ligue is run by the LFP. the decision to stop the mustache cup would come from the pro teams (especially the top few who also have european competitions to fit into the calendar) who want to reduce the load.

There is no "lower division only" cup like there are in England,

Coupe de la ligue is open the 44 pro teams in France, basically all of Ligue 1 & 2 + handful of National teams.

Coupe de France on the other hand has 7,422 teams participating this season and literary spans the entire globe. Talking about Coupe de France and spanning the globe, does anyone know the rules concerning Overseas clubs getting drawn as home clubs against teams from mainland France? Are the games played at a neutral place in continental France or could teams theoretically be made to travel to Guadeloupe for an away tie in the middle of league play?

did anyone ever think to just have a cup for ligue 2? that way clubs that make it really far into Coupe de la ligue or coupe de france won't have to reject participation into the EL and bigger clubs aren't stuck handling cups that offer little incentive
one can even make the ligue 2 cup more incentive driven by offering the winner a promotion spot

I actually didn't even know overseas teams take part in CdF...

Spent some time googeling and found out that the overseas teams indeed to get to play their games at home if drawn as the home team. So next rounds FC Mullhouse will have to travel to New Caledonia and FC Dieppe will have to travel from Normandy to Guyane. It does seems like the FFF pays for the travel costs though.

Small video from last year's coupe de France when Red Star 92 traveled from Paris to Tahiti to play in the 7th round.

Unfortunately it's rare for any of the overseas teams to make all the way to the round 9 when the Ligue 1 clubs joins the party, but it would be fun to see Lyon travel to Mayotte in January.
