We are f##ked. I hope I'm wrong. (seriously) The guy doesn't know much about soccer. He knows about Omnilife. He might be the Mexican Stephen Hamilton. Thank God for no relegation or promotion in the MLS.
Being a Chivas USA fan, and being a fairly new person to soccer as a whole, I found last night meeting to be very shitty (for a lack of a better word). I felt that as an MLS fan, and as a fan who wants the MLS to get better and to become more successful that this may have been the wrong move for Chivas USA. I know I may be in the minority, an Asian American, that is a fan of Chivas USA, and I know that Chivas USA was originally an offshoot of Chivas Guadalajara. However, this is the MLS and it is based in USA. There may be other north american teams: Montreal or Vancouver, but they don't market solely to just Canadians or consider themselves a Canadian team, they think of themselves as part of the MLS. What the president said last night, "I am excited to be here, and I am excited to be working for a Mexican Team..." just pissed me off. I felt like I was kicked in the sack and punched in the guts. Now, I feel discriminated against because I'm not Mexican. It makes me wonder if it's even worth renewing my 3 season tickets. I mean, I have already noticed a trend at the stadium with it shifting to a bit more and more Spanish speaking events... I would love any insight as to what I should be doing now that I'm supporting a "Mexican Team."
I was at the party last night but I didn't want to push and shove to get to the front so i could hear what was going on. I was hanging out in the back enjoying far more than my allotted 3 free beers. From what I've heard I'm a little bummed out, they tried the whole we are Mexican thing already and it failed. It will continue to fail because it is so divisive. We need to be an LA team if we want a strong, lasting fan base. I was hoping all these changes were leading to CDLA in a new LA stadium, only time will tell I suppose. In the meantime all we can do is wait and see, I heard people talking about organizing to get this message across to those in charge. If so, please post up details so I can participate. The only people that will be attracted to the team by the apparent "return to our roots" will be casual Guad. fans and legion1908-not good long term for the organization.
Not up on current events, are you? Check out "What the Flock" on itunes and learn something about Chivas USA. Be careful, you might learn something.
Steve Sampson, is the only local logical choice who should be considered to run the organization at this point in time.
Are you out of your mind. Did you see what he did with the Galaxy. NO WAY we hire him. I would much rather see Waldo get the job
ive never ever felt such a sense of hopelessness as a fan for a team ive supported. ...and ive been a die-hard clipper fan since i was a kid. i said it as a joke before, but we're totally turning into the mexican-inspired version of the "major league" movie series.
Yes, I saw what he did. He won a MLS championship and a US Open cup. Sampson does not need to be the head coach. He should though be, the President of the club or general manager. Chivas USA needs experience, in every aspect of AMERICAN SOCCER. Also, Sampson is very well liked in the Hispanic community and speaks fluent Spanish. No skin off my back, I really do not care what Chivas USA does, but if they want a guy who knows American soccer it probably would be a good choice to get Sampson involved. As far as Wynalda being the head coach, that might be a good move. You still need experience in the front offices that knows the landscape of Southern California.
fair enough, but in my opinion American influence is just as irrelevant as Mexican influence. i just want a functional football club i can support w/o having this daily identity crisis. its seriously giving me issues. clubs are not national teams.
When you have an Ex World Cup coach of the United States and of Costa Rica sitting in your back yard that has great relations with the Hispanic media and who also happens to be a MLS champion and US Open cup champion, it would be of the best interest of Chivas USA to bring him in. He also happens to be American that speaks fluent Spanish. Chivas USA needs to completely clean house from players to administration. The coaches and anybody who has received a pay check needs to go. They all have had there chances for quite a few years.
I completely agree and understand the idea that having a functional club would be awesome, and that the clubs aren't national teams. However, at the same time I believe that in order to be a successful club, you also need a strong fanbase. By alienating your fanbase, and focusing on one ethnicity it hurts that fanbase. Even if they become an excellent club out of nowhere, there is going to be that huge stigma over their heads because of that alienation. Furthermore, even though clubs aren't national teams, they don't go out of their ways to cater towards one demographic. If you look at any major sport in the US, the teams invite fans of any ethnicity to support their clubs. The NFL, the NBA, the MLB, even the NHL all cater to the local market, and hope to cater to the national market in the long run. The Clippers (one of the most dysfunctional groups ever) catered to everyone and anyone. The biggest thing I want to see is soccer to become more popular in the US, and that isn't done by creating a club that focuses on only one demographic.
The Clippers have NEVER been a winner, that is their problem. We are at the fork in the road in road. Will we go the way of the Clippers? Local market be damned fans want winners. Chivas USA starts winning and people will leave the Galaxy to save money and get an early seat on the bandwagon. We had a couple of good years and saw some of them come over. Once we started losing again they declared their allegience to the galaxy again. While the hardcore fans dont like the bandwagoners they bring the most money, ask the Kings fans.
You like bandwagoners trying to lick the gloss off of that cup? I was just responding to the previous point, and in doing so, I also threw the other California-based Kings franchise into that group. They had alot more fans when they were challenging for Western Conference Titles and were a step away from the NBA Finals a couple of times. It's a point that isn't necessarily directed at you but at alot of markets in the US.
