They are telling that Iniesta wasn't that good with club performance, which is true. He is in the contention mainly because of the Euro's. Then again he already won Euro Golden Ball and Uefa Player Of The Year award because of it. Him winning this also would make mockery of the award.

What also is obvious from the ratings, the difference between Messi and Cronaldo is bigger than the difference between Cronaldo and the next 21 players. Which also is true for the season. Messi was in a league of his own.

Nobody so far seems to have highlighted Drogba.

He was terrible in the league last year.

So? He was easily the best player in the Champions League. Together with Cech he basically forcefed them the title scoring clinch goal after clinch goal.

Plus he had a great African Cup of Nations tournament.

Iniesta made the podium of the Balon d'Or a couple of years back doing much less...

So ... his overall form in the year was average at best. He almost cost Chelsea the CL by conceding a penalty in extra-time and others (Ramires, Cech, Lampard) were also decisive in their ultimate victory.

Iniesta should not have featured in the top 3 in 2010 either.

Honestly, I'd say there wasn't much between Drogba, Ramires, Cech and Cole when the CL campaign as a whole is considered. Lampard wasn't far behind either.

He also committed the PK against Barca.

In general I think Ronaldo blasted a big chance to win the award for a second time.

Messi performed great overall but at the quarter final and semi final of the Champions League he only managed to score 2 PK goals. Considering that goal scoring is his primary asset, this provided a major opportunity for Ronaldo.

Ronaldo had a big chance this year to win the Champions League. Bayern Munich was a beatable opponent and Ronaldo did not live up to expectations in both legs. Chelsea was beatable too.

At the euros he interchanged good games with sub-par games and when the moment arrived to knock out Spain in the last minute of the semi-final, he wasted the chance.

My thought in sum is: Ronaldo had past season a realistic opportunity to feature in an european championship final, which is with Portugal a major achievements, and to win the Champions League too (that was far from impossible!). On top of that he could have boasted a domestic championship title. If he had done this, that had given him the decisive edge I believe.

Now he only has the La Liga title.

I still hold that if Ronaldo would had played a great game against Spain, which he didn't, or win the CL with Madrid, he would had gotten it this year.

Just no on Cole, Ramires and Lampard. Cech yes and his omission from the Balon d'or is a big mistake.

It would be pretty ridiculous if the CL champions didn't have a single player. And the only two that deserved it for their CL performance were Drogba and Cech.

And we're not talking about Drogba making the podium but about him being represented in the 23 short list.

He didn't commit anything. That was a clear Barca dive.

Ramires was immense in the run to the final. Set up Drogba versus Napoli and Barca as well as scoring that crucial and brilliant goal at the Camp Nou. Netted in the must-win group stage game against Valencia too. Played all over the pitch, including as emergency right back in the 2nd leg against Barcelona.

Cole was a defensive stalwart and snuffed out danger innumerable times against Bayern and Barca. Lampard scored from the spot against Napoli, Benfica and obviously Bayern in the shootout, and both Ramires' and Drogba's goals against Barcelona involved a brilliant Lampard pass.

It's difficult to quantify exactly how much each player contributed, and no doubt Drogba was the hero of the final (and the Valencia match). There's obviously an eminently reasonable argument to be made that he was the MVP of the CL campaign as a whole for Chelsea. I don't think he was 'easily' the best player though, or that it's particularly outlandish to suggest others might be deserving of that title. There were a number of outstanding performers (Lady Luck in particular deserves a nod here).

Edit: On the subject of the likely winners, these threads are going to be quite a bit more interesting once Messi/Ronaldo have, if not retired, at the very least slowed down considerably. It's all been a bit boring for the past couple seasons.

Of these guys only a handful have truly had award winning seasons (across all competitions in a broader sense)

This is probably a better list, weeding out some players I don't think deserve to be on it with the rest considering the criteria for these awards usually.

Don't think Ramos will ever get the credit he deserves for the season he had last year.

    Sergio Busquets (ESP/FC Barcelone)
    Iker Casillas (ESP/Real Madrid)
    Radamel Falcao (COL/Atletico Madrid)
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (SUE/Milan AC, puis Paris-SG)
    Andrés Iniesta (ESP/FC Barcelone)
    Lionel Messi (AR/ FC Barcelone)
    Neymar (BRE/Santos)
    Mesut Özil (ALL/Real Madrid)
    Andrea Pirlo (ITA/Juventus Turin)
    Sergio Ramos (ESP/Real Madrid)
    Cristiano Ronaldo (POR/Real Madrid)
    Yaya Touré (CIV/Manchester City)
    Xabi Alonso (ESP/Real Madrid)
    Xavi Hernandez (ESP/FC Barcelone)

    5 - Falcao

Coach of the Year should be Prandelli, he must have done what of the best jobs ever with Italy, changing the structure and philosophy completely. His fair play and graciousness is also everything that lacks in today's football. He deserves it a lot.

Do you disagree with my statement?

I think it's clear that there has existed a much stronger lobby in favor of messi then that of Ronaldo

All barca players officials etc always lobby for messi to win , despite Xavi and iniesta clearly being the two players that have approached Ronaldo and messi levels the closest over the years and have win every major title for club and country. They are happy to lobby for messi.

With Real Madrid , they don't all lobby for Ronaldo some lobby for Casillas or others

Ronaldo also is not as protected by the media as messi

Ronaldo in every away ground has fans telling him to die, kill himself, have sex with guti, is a Portuguese son of a B, is a Barbie, is homosexual, etc

Messi has refs taking pics with him, everyone seems to be on his side

That's why unless Ronaldo has a season where he clearly does better than messi, he won't ever win. The chances of that happening are very slim to be honest

If Ronaldo wins more titles the messi lobby will say "it's an individual award and messi scored 83 goals to Ronaldo's 76 , messi made 35.6 assists to Ronaldo's 9, messi asked 19 refs to give cards to opponents and 16 did, Ronaldo asked 5 and none did and he got carded himself for it twice, messi 897676 passes completed, Ronaldo 67455, etc"

If Ronaldo scores more goals and wins golden shoe and messi wins major titles
    The messi lobby will say
"But Ronaldo's goals meant nothing, the ballon dor should be given bases on team awards

Ronaldo scored 67 goals while messi scored 61 and messi won the champions league , la liga etc

Heck if Ronaldo scored 70 goals won nothing and messi scored 40 and won only copa del Rey I suspect the messi lobby will be strong for messi again

Conclusion : unless Ronaldo wins all major titles in a year and scores similar or better amount of goals the messi, he cant defeat the messi lobby to win the ballon dor.

The messi lobby is in fact so strong , it's not only Ronaldo who suffers. In 2010 we see the first time in history during a world cup year a player win the ballon dor for winning only a league title, scoring ridiculous amounts of goals (which Ronaldo himself would win the same golden shoe the next season in the same league scoring even more goals ) . While a World Cup winning player or big performer does not win the award.

    4-0 says otherwise

Beating Ireland, England on penalties and beating Germany (who they always beat) is nothing special for Italy especially if they get clobbered to death in the final .

Many Italian coaches would have done similar
Many I bet would also not have lost 4-0

Portuguese resorting in victim tactics.

Phlueeese, you should just accept Messi had clearly the better performance. I think it was shown already multiple times in the last thread already, and which majority out there are now saying. It's just being objective about it, nothing wrong with that.

Putting it simply though, all things being equal (goals, trophies) Messi will be a better player than Ronaldo.

Messi provides more assists, he completes more key passes, he completes more passes in general, he completes more dribbles, he takes less shots, he turns the ball over less, he plays more accurate through passes.

That can be seen in the two players' statistics. Ronaldo is a fabulous player, but Messi is better.
