Uh-Oh.....news in Roachester-land is that the club is going broke. Maybe no 2013 for Rhinos soccer. What sad story that is. A team almost entering MLS and now can't even survive in 3rd division level.
Someone who joined today and has posted twice about how bad GolTV is and now that Rochester is going broke. Complete troll. Someone bored on a Sunday.
The Rhinos have been in a decent position. I don't believe this poster at all. Troll is more like it.
I know he joined yesterday, but does he think we were born yesterday as well? We have some epic trolls in these parts, this guy is semi-pro at best.
He followed it up with "we'll see", so it must be true. Oh noes! I'd call him WSW lite, but that would be giving him too much credit.
found this on www.rhinossoccer.com The Rochester Rhinos will be conducting a tryout this fall at Total Sports Experience in Rochester, New York from Tuesday, December 11th through Thursday, December 13th 2012. The tryout will highlight some of the best collegiate talent in American soccer as well as young international talents who are trying to break into American soccer
unfortuntely, neighbours are not always good friends Most of the men who run the Rochester Rhinos and most of the men who own and run the Rochester Lancers don’t like each other. Instead of these two soccer teams working together — cross-promoting each other, making bigger names out of their stars and sharing the burden of player salaries (a benefit to each club and the players, who’d probably earn a bit more money) — they work against each other http://blogs.democratandchronicle.com/devo/?p=8339
The naivete of Jeff Di Veronica is astounding. I know he is a sports writer for a local paper in Rochester and not a columnist for the Wall Street Journal, but come on, Jeff. Did you not take any business classes in high school or college? The Lancers and Rhinos ARE competitors in every sense of the word. They are competing for the same type of employees (both on and off the field), the same sponsors, and the same audience. What is so hard to understand? In the real world businesses compete against each other and some win and others lose. In the real world we don't sit around and brainstorm how we can cooperate with our competition. Sitting around holding hands and thinking positive thoughts works great for a hippie drum circle, but not so much for presidents of businesses. How utterly stupid. He doesn't understand why someone wouldn't promote a competing business through his own? No. The real problem in this spat isn't the Rhinos ownership. It is the USL folks who allowed the Lancers to encroach on the Rhinos' marketplace.
When the Rhino's were born in 1996, there were only 4 pro sports teams in the metro market....Rhino's (A-league)...Red Wings (AAA baseball)....Amerks (AHL hockey)....and the Knighthawks (NLL lacrosse). Now at the end of 2012, we have still those 4 previously mentioned PLUS 6 others......Rochester Razorsharks (PBL basketball which is well attended thru mainly free sponsor tix for fans, the owners are committed to what they do and are well liked in the community). Rochester Rattlers (MLL outdoor lacrosse, which is also owned by Rhino's owner Rob Clark and Adirondack Sports....they play at Shalen's stadium as well). Rochester Ravens (USL's W-League womens soccer owned by former Rhino star Doug Miller....and current Lancer indoor star, he's also committed to bringing in a quality product at that level of the women's game). Western NY Flash (WPS/ WPSL-elite women's league owned by Mr. Shalen ,hence Shalen's Stadium....he also would own 20 or 25% of an MLS team here if the possibility ever came up again....zero to none on that we could safely assume). Rochester Lancers (MISL indoor team owned by Soccer Sam Fantuzzo and a few others) .....I get seasons for both the Lancers and Rhino's ,although in 2013 will just get a 5-pack to Rhino's like many other former season tix holders I know who would rather see them in the NASL I'm planning on some Cosmos,Red Bull and TFC (I know they suck but my cousins always offer their tix to me a few times a year) to mix it up next year. Alot of Lancer fans I know get freebie tix thru sponsors,etc....I just do it as a biz write off. Not quite sure how indoor will draw this winter, between all the kids freebies, pizza freebies and Syracuse knights/lancers cross freebies it seems that ticket sales might not be doing too hot without all the extra incentives. Still indoor is a pretty cool pick up game in the cold months for a change of pace. And lastly, there will be a ninth pro team entering this winter under the Indoor football niche, the Rochester "forgot the name" . So we do have alot of competition in this market for ticket sales, venue dates, media, sponsors, etc. And the economy upstate is always an issue too, like everywhere else. I'm only speculating, but perhaps some bad blood between the Lancers and Rhinos started when a major Rhino stadium sponsor (Nothnagle Realty) jumped ship and went to the Lancers. Sam and Nothnagle's owner are cousins I believe, so that probably started some friction between the clubs.
Maybe I'm not living in the real world, or possibly it's because I haven't taken enough business classes, but how are indoor and outdoor soccer fierce competitors? The players, concession staff, sponsors, and audience don't have to choose. The two sports never have any scheduling overlap so it's entirely possible to attend a Rhinos game without having to forsake a trip to Blue Cross Arena. They are as much competitors as the Lancers and Red Wings or a music venue and any of the various semi-professional and amateur sports operations in town. They are similar without selling the same product, and it is precisely the similarities that present an opportunity for cooperation that would seem silly between any of the other sports/entertainment endeavors. I'm not saying DiVeronica isn't naive, I personally think he's a dolt. But on this one, he doesn't seem that far off.
Ok, I will break it down for you this way. And I preference this as my opinion based on real world business experience and watching sports for my whole life. So take it for what it's worth. All sports teams are competitors for sponsors, media coverage, spectators, and sometimes players and venues. Even if seasons don't overlap, sponsors don't have an infinite amount of money to spend on sports. Business owners make decisions to support one team over another. Now some can sponsor every available team in town. Now, I will grant you that there are other potential sponsors that may have not been tapped, but that doesn't make the entities that are trying to reach those new sponsors any less competitors. Anecdotal evidence: I know of a business owner who used to purchase suites and season tickets to the NHL, NFL, and MLB in this town to give to employees and clients. He told me that as the economy soured, he was forced to cut back. He chose to keep his Lightning tickets over the other two, because the game day experience was better and there was more demand from his clients for the hockey tickets. Plus he got access to concerts in the building as well. Sounds like competition doesn't it? Of course, an indoor and outdoor soccer team could cooperate. I am just saying not to be shocked when they don't unless they have some kind of shared interests. That is why you see NHL and Arena Football teams working together. They often have shared ownership or the Arena team is filling dates in a building run or owned by the NHL owner.
found this survey on rhinosoccer.com Would you like to see the Rhinos participate in the USL or NASL for the 2013 season? NASL 3 100% Don't Care 0 0% USLPRO 0 0% only 3 persons voted, maybe people don't care too much about the Rhinos anymore
