Revs Offseason News, 2012 (Part 1)

LOVE Matt Reis... but I think it's time to turn the page. I think Shuttleworth's been pretty decent, and I wouldn't have a major problem if we went into next year with him as the starter... provided they either acquire a veteran backup or use a fairly high pick on a goalkeeper in the draft.

A veteran defensive midfielder who's played at a high level and knows the league? Hmmm...

 

Bah. Too much effort.

Plus the FO's cards would have moved too far away from their vest had they, you know, even mentioned that he might be on his way out. Don't want to tip their hand with so much important ... I-don't-know-what ... at stake.

Did you read the part about Reis having one more start would kick in the guarantee on his contract for next year? Then Heaps says, "but that's not my department..." Sure, it makes sense for them to give Shuttleworth some starts to see what he can do, but this reminds me of the scene in the movie "Eight Men Out" where pitcher Eddie Cicotte was to get a bonus if he won 30 games. After 29 wins with a month left in the season he didn't start another game.

Then again, the Revs don't want to be hamstrung by a hefty contract a la Joseph, whom they were lucky to trade. But if he was planning to retire, the contract doesn't matter anyway. My guess is that Reis would like to come back for another year, but the Revs only want him on short money. If they can't reach agreement it would be a shame for the best keeper we ever had to end it like this.

 

There is so much secrecy about player contracts I wonder if we'll ever find out if this is true. Of course, in a Matt Reis vs. Revs' Management version of 'He Said - They Said', I will believe Matt every time.

BTW: Eight Men Out is an EXCELLENT film. My favourite baseball movie of all time. If you haven't seen it, you really should.

I assumed that Reis and the Organization were on good terms, and that he would gracefully retire and get a nice coaching job as like assistant to Remi Roy or something. Heir apparent to Remi's. job.
Maybe he is in a Ralston situation in which he will go to some other dump team in hopes of being a coach someday... wans't Ralston's initial parting not amicable?

Wow, I still think Matt has at least one more good year in him. It's gotta be the Heaps "This is my team now" dynamic.

 

If Reis really wants to go into GK coaching, what better way to do it than to make him a "player-coach?" He can be paid a decent wage, but assign 75% of that to "coaching" and keep his "player" cap figure low to allow for flexibility to pay other players.

Seems like they should have given him the start in the last home game, just to let fans give him a proper sendoff

 

I like this idea. Pay him the league minimum. Then pay him an additional 60k as a coach. That's what savvy teams do. Give him a few games, but mostly train Shuttleworth (and/or a draft pick) as a replacement.

 

Reis should replace Causey. God, that would be awesome!


But... when he retires, I'll be thoroughly depressed for a few weeks. What can I say? He was amazing, I was young, I looked up to him. He's been my hero for a long time. Quite the personality, too, with an abnormally high voice for a guy his size. And he had great foot skills that's rare to find in a keeper.

And I hate how the organization doesn't honor these players on the way out. We love them and they do nothing to credit or tribute to them. The apathy is a cold slap to the face.

 

Just wondering... when Shalrie was traded, did anyone ever see a quote from anyone named Kraft thanking him for his years of service, etc?

 

Have you come to expect any better? This organization has no sense of history at all.

 

I think every game Shuttleworth can get under his belt is worth something.

It's great to be sentimental and all, but I'm not gonna blame Heaps or the Revs for trying to keep their focus on improving the team first and foremost.

IIRC, plenty of people were calling on them to play their younger guys down the stretch. And, to the extent that this run has been a trial for Shuttleworth, to me it's shown that he can be a competent keeper, one whose still a little raw and makes some mistakes, but a guy who wouldn't be a disaster as the #1 keeper.

 

Agreed, but if Reis really is retiring it would have been nice to at least give him the last 20 minutes of the game against Chicago. Look at what Montreal did with Sebrango this past weekend, Reis deserves at least that, if not more. It would also make this situation a lot easier to deal with if he would announce whether or not he was retiring/returning.

 

God, I hate everything about the article.

Paraphrase: Things are looking up, we finished the season on a good note, there's a lot to be optimistic about, we have a good core of players, blah, blah, blah, more of the same. It's all rinse, wash, repeat with this franchice.

I'm going to try to find the same article that McCarthy, FDA, another Kraft chronie, etc. wrote at the end of last season after drawing Toronto at the death in the finale. Details to come...
