Another season, another thread on the attendance. First off, may I say, it is damn good not to have to worry about Gold Coast United from an attendance standpoint. Even though it is just one game, the Wanderers attendance would be the second best game that GCU ever got and it was a steep drop from there for GCU. Hopefully the Wanderers are able to not only keep their attendance at a reasonable proximity to the 10k they got, but build on it. Other than that, this was a pretty good opening weekend for A-League, primarily thanks to starting off with a Melbourne Derby and it's 42k+ attendance. Factoring out the Melbourne game and this would be the second lowest attendance for an opening weekend, but, of course, you can't do that. I'm also trying out BS's new table format for the first time, so here is hoping it works: Round 1 numbers: TeamAttendance Victory42,032 Wellington12,057 Western Sydney10,458 Perth14,085 Newcastle14,868 Total93500 Average18,700 AAQ with 3.7% of the season complete: SeasonAverageMedian%<7k%>16kAvg PtsMed Pts<7k Pts>16k PtsAAAQAAAQ Rnk 2005/0614999131600%33.3%45520671635 2006/0714564157810%33.3%50150671313 2007/0814598168280%66.7%49000491 2008/0914270160220%66.7%531100652 2009/10136311384720%40%6142100532576 2010/11103919764.516.7%16.7%100100831003838 2011/12159701246720%20%3362100932887 2012/1318700140850%20%0390931324 Average by Round: Round2005/062006/072007/082008/092009/102010/112011/122012/13Grand Total 1175521574114554133311363110810159701870015007 211181145841699496701213090451111811973 37921589710135135859153105121759210853 41165115024148281287086746624733110666 512031883212291950283616571127289965 683661265815131112811200810018965511193 712087992812442120011008448011392710459 81051614910100779818619887451156310080 9121751426015352147361252910465933412507 101040098241830812294122387359858410914 11929912580111491014568918868104409827 1210143152351637111396974684781136211438 1313204964010709752272508641111079792 147276149601561182339632676488039813 151086010528145211395780487965954310350 16975120003144159901100345936825910516 1711746116811388415627798168541145610815 1810146116431711217379617083511262611441 199602119411388411006113597635958410508 2095231554621171145051068710645954112750 211462716259175811704498709643653312377 227097899490868463 23119907890104889983 241059111624789510223 259487779192948732 261087549537230 27126371412213379 Grand Total1095512937145961218198288400104971870010927
If you don't mind I thought I would mention the TV Ratings which look very impressive the first round matches hit a averaged over 100,000 viewers and was 38 per cent higher than the corresponding fixtures last year. http://www.foxsports.com.au/footbal...s-and-tv-ratings/story-e6frf4gl-1226491853677 Melbourne Victory vs Melbourne Heart 129,000 West Sydney vs Central Coast 124,000 Wellington vs Sydney 109,000 Perth vs Brisbane 102,000 Newcastle vs Adelaide 77,000
Good news considering that the TV rights will be negotiated shortly. New Zealand figures aren't included in the TV rights so the 109,000 was basically just Sydney support which is good. I'd expect both Sydney teams as well as the Victory to consistently hit the 100k mark for TV rights. Though it does help that NSW has much higher rates of pay TV take up then the three southern states.
How does that compare to other sporting events in Australia? That's pretty close to what MLS gets in the US on NBCSN, but we've got something like 15 times your population.
The domestic twenty20 league (runs December and January) had average TV ratings of just over 250k on average last year with the highest games near 500k. Cricket however does benefit from being the only truly national sport as well as having household figures. Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting would be the biggest names in Australian sport. The figures are slightly less then super rugby tv ratings. AFL and NRL are shown free to air as well as on foxtel. Foxtel tv rates would be higher then the cricket for both, with the NRL higher then the AFL. SA and WA and to a lesser extent Victoria have a low takeup of Foxtel though. The TV rights deals for all these sports are all much higher then for the A-League so an increase in the next TV rights deal is warranted.
Pretty much. Especially when you include the crowd figures. The Melbourne derby had over 100k people watching and over 40k at the ground.
I would not say only Sydney supporters watched would of also been neutrals who was interested in the hype Sydney has created but your right Sky NZ figures are not included but would be interested to see how their ratings compare to Foxtel. This time of year before the domestic T20 cricket comp starts ratings look very impressive on Friday night the Melbourne derby won the night on subscription television, Saturday A-league rated 1st and 2nd with Man City match coming in 3rd with 95,000 it seemed like the only EPL game to rate on the weekend and with daylight savings pushing EPL further into the night it will begin to struggle breaking into the top programs. Sunday not as good Perth vs Brisbane came in 2nd behind Rugby Union and Newcastle vs Adelaide came in 7th. Dipping into the ratings from time to time last session it seemed like matches were not rating much over 80,000 at the high end and their was matches around 40,000 probably some below. So I am hoping this 100,000+ is not just a round 1 buzz factor and they can continue to at least get the big games to hover around the 100,000 mark.

Average crowd of 16,366 - according to Yoshou's table above that's the 2nd highest 2nd round average for the A-League - still looking good. Unfortunately for Perth, the year where we seem to have finally got it sorted and should be increasing crowds - NIB stadium is being redeveloped and will be reduced capacity all season.
This might actually be a blessing for the Glory. A limited supply means that fans have more incentive to buy tickets, or they can lose them to the quicker mate. And if the team's performance makes the tickets a valuable commodity, the demand will rise and when the stadium is finally expanded, the demand is higher than before. Cf. Houston Dynamo.
More good news from Sydney... This time from the Wanderer's camp: http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/news-display/sydney-derby-sold-out/50405 According to the ever reliable Wikipedia, that's around 21k. Excellent.
It is crazy early in the season and the teams are still working their way through their first games, but so far, so good. With the Melbourne Derby last week and Sydney FC getting their best regular season attendance in their history, this season is kicking some serious butt. Not only that, but we got good numbers from the Roar and Heart this week. On a two week basis, there is a lot to be excited about this season with regards to attendance. As would I, Subi is horrible. Just dissappointing that Perth will have low crowds despite probably going close to selling out most games.
On the other hand good atmosphere at games as well as good performance should set Perth up for next year. I go to a few Perth games a year and at times it was depressing when the Glory were playing average football in a half empty stadium.
crowds still remain decent but tv ratings taken a bit of a dip , I thought the NSW derbies would of rated a little higher and the 2 Sunday games are starting to drop back to last years standards Melbourne Victory vs Adelaide United crowd: 19,174 tv: 102,000 Newcastle Jets vs Central Coast Mariners crowd: 15,289 tv: 78,000 Western Sydney Wanderers vs Sydney FC crowd: 19,126 tv: 102,000 Wellington Phoenix vs Brisbane Roar crowd: 9,182 tv: 58,000 Perth Glory vs Melbourne Heart crowds: 7,548 tv: 67,000

As a Western Australian I only noticed that my Kiwi mate was depressed. I quickly became and strong Wallabies fan who watched every minute of the game. (and then I find out that we drew and didn't win)
