Given his continued side affect from a concussion nearly a year ago and his limited, limited playing time, have we seen the last of our long time captain ?? How will the Rapids FO send him off and WHEN ?? I want to / must be there for that one !
I'm a little surprised he hasn't announced his retirement yet. I figured he'd do it before the end of the year. Maybe he thinks he can play next year, but I wouldn't expect the Rapids to offer him a new contract.
Apparently he is going to wait until after the season to decide. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...roeni-embraces-half-coach-role-ponders-future
I'm now guessing if he chooses not to retire they choose to re-sign him. Probably at a much reduced contract, but very incentive based. He also continues in this half-coach role. If he retires then they hire him to be an assistant. Either way, the team struggles out of the gate in 2013 and Pareja starts to look over his shoulder. 10 games into 2013, Pareja is fired, Pablo is named coach.
I'm definitely in the "give Pareja more time" camp, but I could get behind canning him for Pablo. I'd give him a full year on the sideline as an assistant before making the transition though.
Sorry, Pablo. Our team is old enough, I don't see the Rapids re-signing him time to move on. Maybe they can honor him first game of season?
If he does go the coaching route, I hope it turns out more Peter Vermes/Ben Olsen than John Spencer. Although Spencer's Alaska Airlines commercial crushes Olsen's Dick's Sporting Goods commercial.
It's the template they used to hire Gary Smith. I'd love to see Pablo coach. I'd rather lose with a Rapid at the helm than a Burn.
It's great the Rapids were able to get him an MLS Cup. Eight years ago, my son named our new dog Pablo. He can't catch squirrels the way he could back then either. (Not pretty to see, by the way.)
Once he retires, the pay day ends right? If you even think you have a 30%, 40%, whatever chance of playing next year and want to play another year or three why forgo the $ on top of giving up? I'm just throwing that out there. I don't know the details on how these things usually work.
Well, his contract is up at the end of the year, so he has to be able to get somebody to give him a new contract. Given that he's 36 and missed essentially all of this season due to concussion symptoms that haven't fully resolve themselves yet, that's kind of a challenge. Maybe Pareja has told him that if he wants to play he has a (limited) role here. But I find it hard to believe that any other MLS team is going to take much of a chance on him at this point.
I'm surprised people would want Pablo to be coach. First, as far a leader goes - he's a "leader by example". He's not the guy in the locker room that's laying out plans and what not. Second, I've heard he's a bit of a head case. I'm not sure during his time in Colorado there has been a coach he's backed completely. If he were to go that route - I think he'd need a lot more time learning the role. But what do I know - I thought Spencer and Pareja would be great coaches
I'm not sure that's the best choice of words to describe Pablo right now. I think Pablo would be a great hire, as an assistant coach (similar to how Pareja was hired by Dallas as an assistant coach when he retired) if that's what Pablo wants to do. He's got his "B" coaching license this past offseason so I would guess he's interested.
This is the thing that would lead me to believe that maybe he would be interested and an assistant position would be best to start. Just if the results still aren't there to begin next year, does the time table for him becoming a head coach jump forward? Lots of speculation in there. The first thing is that he has to actually retire first which he still hasn't done. Maybe we are still wondering what his role will be with the club at this time next year.
Can't blame him at all, just hope they honor him first game. Besides his health concerns, most vets don't want to go through re-building in twilight of their careers.
Not really surprising. I think it's the right decision; his health is much more important for him and his family at this point than continuing to put himself in potentially harmful situations on the field. I hope that he does stay on in some capacity, whether it be as a scout, coach or something else. He is a true Rapids legend and will be missed greatly.
Best wishes to Pablo. Hope they find a way to keep him around the club in some capacity. Sad to see a legend go out like this. Always hoped for an Elway-like departure for Casey and Pablo.
I love the intrigue, but I prefer it when watching Homeland. We figure that you know somebody...what direction do you figure things have changed? Pablo may be attempting a "comeback"?
