Correction on Ohio State Ranking. Also added first column of points. A little work in progress. I'll revisit it after next Sunday. Soccerwoowoo, this will help: Go to the nc-soccer website's Conferences page here: https://www.nc-soccer.com/wsoccer/2012/conferences. Scroll down to the Big Ten. Click on Pts once and then again and you will have a useful sort of the Big 10 teams by points earned. To see a team's record and remaining games, click on the team's name to the left. Maybe you already are using this resource?
Great chart, woowoo. Let's see if I learned from my last formatting mistake... Saturday's game Michigan 2 Northwestern 0 Sunday's games Iowa 0 Minnesota 0 (three straight scoreless ties for Iowa) Penn State 5 Indiana 2 Ohio State 1 Purdue 0 This week should help decide a lot in terms of the B1G Tournament. Here's the schedule: Wednesday 10/10 Michigan State at Michigan Thursday 10/11 Purdue at Indiana Friday 10/12 Illinois at Minnesota Northwestern at Wisconsin Ohio State at Iowa Penn State at Nebraska Sunday 10/14 Illinois at Wisconsin Indiana at Michigan State Northwestern at Minnesota Ohio State at Nebraska Penn State at Iowa Purdue at Michigan
Gotten to view a couple Big 10 games this year. The whole lot is messy football. Not sure any would do well outside their conference. Will get to see Penn State in a few weeks, we'll see how they compare.
Elsewhere, the Big Ten is spreading the love with this week's weekly award winners. Co-winners for Offensive POTW and FOTW: http://www.bigten.org/sports/w-soccer/spec-rel/100812aaa.html
I confirm it is not an automatic bid any more. Indiana has to get in the top 8 to qualify. I had to recheck my own understanding on this, especially because 10 of the 11 original core member schools have each played in the tournament they hosted regardless of standings -- the 11th tournament would have been Indiana's this year. The coaches voted to take away the host slot after last year's NWU-Penn St matchup. Poor RPI, poor crowds.
If I may add a suggestion, given the traditional home advantage in the B1G, maybe put an @ sign for any away matchups. Some of these road trips really take it out of the visiting team....
That's really good to hear. If the host school isn't good enough to qualify, they won't draw a crowd anyway. We've seen that repeatedly in the previous format.
Always looking for a chance to educate about the RPI: On average, a home team performs as though its ARPI (2012 version) is 0.009 higher than its calculated ARPI and an away team performs as though its ARPI is 0.009 lower. This is based on a full season, but using Michigan and Illinois as an example and treating their current ratings as end-of-season ratings: Current ARPI Michigan: .6265 Illinois: .6223 Game at Illinois Illinois effective ARPI: .6313 Michigan effective ARPI: .6175 Game at Michigan Michigan effective ARPI: .6355 Illinois effective ARPI: .6133 I could give more detail, but to give an idea what this means, looking at all games for teams in Michigan's and Illinois' current ARPI ranking range (Top 60), the higher rated team (when ratings are adjusted as I've done above for game location) wins about 78% of the time. The percentage is higher when the rating spreads are higher and lower when the rating spreads are lower, but this overall average gives a good sense of the importance of home field. (My 0.009 and 78% numbers are based on five years of data covering the 2007 through 2011 seasons -- roughly 15,000 games -- so they should be pretty reliable.)
NW v Nebraska Minn v San Diego St Minn v Michigan OSU v NW NW v Michigan Pitch and run, no posession play, no connecting, no thinking ahead, dozens of turnovers. Upper classman seemd to play better from experience, underclassman need lots of training and to build confidence, they play scared. Maybe I just hit poor matches. Watching ACC and PAC10 is playing at a differnt level. Couple others on B10 network but not Penn State yet. Hope to see some games yet this year as I travel the Big10 states.
So you're saying the Big Ten play is as messy as your spelling? For what it's worth, Minnesota absolutely thrashed their only Pac-10 opponent this year and lost by a goal to #1 Florida State. I do agree Minnesota-San Diego State was ugly, very ugly. SDSU forced their style of play the entire evening. I'm guessing they do that to everybody seeing their ranking and record. I thought the Minnesota-Wisconsin game was one of the more wide open, entertaining games I've seen in a while. I think it helped that neither team subbed a whole lot...creates a more wide open game.
Who cares about the spelling.... I was at two of the games mentioned and I think the poor play description was accurate. Not saying they weren't entertaining and both were wins, but its just not pretty.
Why is that good to hear. It doesn't matter who is the eight place team in this pile... I've seen ten of the bunch and none of the those I've seen will beat the first seed team. So whether its's Indiana or Illinois (and Illinois is no juggernaut as observed during the IU match), it doesn't matter who plays, so why not give the home team (Indiana) a turn to experience tournament play. Especially if it's true this is the 11th team and tournament. And do you really think crowds size and revenue matters in big ten womens soccer? Come on man, it's womens soccer. And affect RPI; the only two teams that have a chance to make a run in the big tournament are Penn St and maybe Michigan. So the impact on the first place team is either minimal in terms of a 94 RPI IU team and most likely irrelevant.
Of the teams you list there, I've only seen Ohio State in person. They do play a pretty direct style, for the most part. That's also how Michigan has played when I've seen them in past years under Ryan. When Illinois is playing well, they're able to control possession and connect passes through the midfield. They did that pretty well against Iowa, Purdue and at times against Michigan State. As for the ACC and Pac 12, they're pretty clearly still the premier conferences in the country, so I don't think you'll find too many Big Ten teams at that level, particularly when you're talking about the top teams in those conferences. You should definitely see Penn State if you get a chance. Not sure there's a better forward in the country than Maya Hayes. Add in the likes of Nairn, Schram, Weber and Costa, and they are a handful.
If you're going to have the top eight teams qualify, then it should be the top eight teams. Not the top seven plus the 12th place team, who just happens to be hosting the tournament (i.e. Northwestern last year). And, no, it's not about crowd sizes. That was the argument for the host team to automatically qualify, and it never helped the crowds.
If IU wants to play the tournament on their home field, they should try to finish in the top 8. This is Big Ten athletics.
Until teams in the Big Ten can have more quality vs. quantity in their recruiting numbers and retain more players through their four years, we'll continue to see less than polished soccer. Penn State coach gets positive remarks from her players for being a good teaching coach and coach who cares about her players off the field...makes for a good team environment.
So they are not trying to win in your opinion. What do you think they should do? You seem to have the answers to everything you write about. So fix them Gofer. And in the mean time, why don't you tell the administration at Minnysota to drop the mens basketball program as it appears that they aren't trying to win. This is BIG TEN athletics!
I will be there on the 21st for the game. Should be an interesting match up, if Big Blue can hold the course for a few more games.
Ohio State beat Maryland who is currently in first place in the ACC and Missouri who is tied for first in the SEC. Looks like they've done pretty well out of Conference! BTW, this may be the best Penn State team ever!
I don't think Penn State has seen a Michigan defense like this before. Nkem Ezurike is a pretty awesome forward as well. Should be a great game!
I fixed the order of the teams that are yet to play as some weren't in chrono order. Then I had some fun and predicted the end of season...the power of the keyboard. Doubt it is scientifically done, as I just looked team by team, but what you'all think. With this tight season there will be a log jam in the middle and will be based on game records. If BMoline could reformat this chart, much appreciated.
