Rules of what a valid character pick is: 1) The character has to have appeared in at least two different episodes/story lines from the series/miniseries/made-for-television movies/whatever in question. 2) You can pick characters that have appeared in multiple series, even in cases where there is only the slightest hint of them being the same person. 3) You can pick characters played by multiple actors and get the whole character as long as they are supposed to be playing the same character or there is some other plot continuity. 4) You cannot pick generic figures (such as "Satan") with the expectation of getting all occurrences of that figure in all of television. You can pick a distinct instance of such characters. 5) The character must be fictitious, but there is great leeway in the definition. A character appearing "as himself" or "as herself" in a scripted show is still considered a valid character for the purpose of this draft. A stand-up comedian doing his schtick as a character is a valid pick. You can even pick a news announcer from a legitimate news network if you can make a decent argument that that person is knowingly performing a fictitious personality. 5a) You can pick a dramatization of a real person, but you only get whatever greatness is in the show, not the greatness of the person in real life. If the characters have appeared in both TV and movies, you only get the greatness of the TV portrayals (so picking "Han Solo" because he was in the Star Wars Christmas Special means you only get a drunk guy palling around with a space-cocaine addled Princess Leia for 5 minutes). 5b) The characters don't need to be portrayed by humans as long as there is some form of acting or following a script.

I choose.. Cosmo Kramer Seinfeld Eccentric, mischievous...perhaps a little on the crazy side, Kramer is one of Seinfeld's most beloved characters. Al Swearengen Deadwood The best character from the best show in TV history. Al starts as the villain, then makes a slow, inexorable transition to anti-hero and eventually lands as sympathetic protagonist. All while offering some of the most memorable soliloquies the medium's ever offered. NSWF video Quango is up.
I'm sure I'm not the only one worried that all of my picks are so brilliant they are bound to go early, despite what was said in the sign-up thread. We'll see how it plays out though, I'm very eager to see who I can wait on and who I have to take early. Of course, there was only ever one first choice in my draft: Eric Cartman South Park Cartman is my generation's Archie Bunker, as so many sites will tell you, only he's far, far worse. He's an 8-year old sociopath, entirely incapable of showing any sort of empathy... and if he does he's probably scheming, not being sincere. He's consistently racist, anti-semitic, homophobic and so on. He never learns the lessons the other kids do - somehow always twisting things to fit his understanding of the world around him. Of course, he's also a coward unwilling to ever stand up for these things on his very own. Despite all the exaggeration that goes into his character, he's remarkably "believable" in the little universe of South Park, you can buy into his complete inability to empathize and his twisted logic if you've seen him before. And he's one of the most popular characters ever created and people identify with him - usually not for an entire episode or for the whole series mind you. He's also got a great singing voice, but I'll save that for another post. Instead I'll give you some stock misogyny as a sample of this character's behavior. I am going to have to add my reasoning a little bit later this afternoon but so I dont hold up the draft my first selection is.... Eric Taylor - Friday Night Lights
Write-up on my Eric Taylor selection. I'm a little disappointed with the lack of good videos on Youtube but here is one that I found. Eric Taylor was the head coach of the Dillon Panthers and then the East Dillon Lions on Friday Night Lights. But, he was so much more. It is rare that a television character is given so many dimensions and depth and the actor is able to pull it off like Kyle Chandler did on FNL. The character of Coach Taylor is what I would consider an everyday hero. It is not often that a TV character is developed into the type of man that Coach Taylor was. Ever since the first season, I felt he was one of the better written characters on television and it is impressive that both the writers and Kyle Chandler was able to maintain that level without turning him into a caricature. Eric Taylor was a coach, a father, a husband, a neighbor, a teacher, and a leader. Coach Taylor is the type of man who goes to court to stand up for a former athlete or spends his free time helping one of his former athletes rehab from a knee injury so they can get a scholarship to a Division I school. He provides tough love and throws his QB in the shower after spending a day drinking and feeling sorry for himself providing him with exactly what he needed to get back on track. He is the type of man who can provide leadership to a group of kids with a single look. He is the type of man who takes the rough parts of life in stride and makes the best of it like being forced out as coach. While FNL wasn’t the highest rated show and Coach Taylor isn’t as well known as the other selections this far, I took Coach Taylor first because I know there are a lot of FNL fans on this board and I would be shocked if I were the only one planning on picking him. I think FNL is one of the better network TV shows in recent years and probably one of the most underrated shows ever. Kyle Chandler’s portrayal of Eric Taylor is probably one of the top reasons this show was so great.
I don't feel the best character in TV has been picket yet. And you know what - I'm not going to pick that person either. I'm going to have a strange draft that will hopefully make sense at a later date. Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel Faith didn't have a great introduction to the world of Slaying. Right after being minted as a vampire hunter a vile vampire badly beats her and murders her Watcher (and sole parent figure). The replacement Watcher uses her in a quest for power, so she is thrown into a group too tightly knit to let her in. When she makes a tragic mistake, that group seems willing to throw her out. So she takes in with the town bad guy, the fall out of which leads her into a self-destructive spiral. At first she looks for any way to die, and then after years of getting better only looks for a noble way to die. Only at the end does she come to a difficult and fragile reconciliation with the remains of the vampire slayer organization.

Faith is an interesting choice. Out of all the Buffy characters, I didnt think she would get selected.
Round one pick: I select Stephen Colbert playing Stephen Colbert on "The Colbert Report." It all started here, and I am as pleased to say I was watching on night one of "The Repor" as I am to say the same thing about MLS - I remind you of truthiness which you can watch here. I've heard all sorts of things about what a particular television character has meant to a particular segment of society, but I know of none with such wide impact as Stephen Colbert. Google truthiness and you'll find articles about science and how Colbert's invention of the word predates what science has come to understand. Watch the brilliance of the Super PAC or his testimony before Congress about migrant workers and see some incisive, hilarious political commentary. Check out his sponsorship of the US Speedskaters, involvement with NASA, tie to the music industry, promotion of the Smithsonian, and a whole host of other things - Colbert has made this character somehow part of almost any topic in the country. He's everywhere. And funny, oh so funny.
Second round pick: Walter White from Breaking Bad Warning: Description may be slightly spoilerish. Walter White is the anti-est of TV's anti-heroes, brilliantly portrayed by Bryan Cranston. When this apparently mild-mannered high school chemistry teacher learns has terminal lung cancer, he turns to meth production as a way to make money to leave to his family. But as time goes on, Walter's attitudes and behavior slowly transform until we are left to wonder whether a life of criminality has turned him into a monster, or whether it has only revealed the monster he's been all along. Walter is one of those characters so complex, compelling and dynamic that you keep rooting for him long after he has clearly become the villain of his own show. As his behavior grows more despicable, he also gets more competent and badass. He's self-obsessed and ruthless. He has no code other than his own self-interest. But he's also stunningly intelligent. When all is said and done, Walter White proves that science is ********ing awesome. Excellent choice with Stephen Colbert, I was hoping a lot of people would overlook him. I was considering taking him the next couple of rounds. Walter White was on my list as well but figured he would be quickly.
For most of my list, I would be happy enough with another character from the same show. But there is no other character in that show, so the risk of leaving him on the board is too high. Plus, I think him the #1 pick of all-time, so it's a steal of a pick regardless.
I'm a big fan of South Park and The Simpsons, but my favourite, and one that I feel doesn't always get the credit it deserves...is Futurama. Love it... ..and with that, I pick the one and only.. Bender Bending Rodriguez Bender is probably the most lovable sociopath (if a robot can be classed as such) on TV. He's a liar and a thief...and ultimately very selfish. Yet despite all this, he has shown at times he has a softer more emotional side when it comes to his friends or deeper moral situations. Always entertaining, and often screen stealing, I believe him to be one of the best animated characters that I've ever seen.....if you disagree, you can bite my shiny meta... Your turn ASU55RR
