They only missed out on the league by 4 points in 2009.

While their Champions League win came too shortly after Abramovich's tenure to really count in this argument, they also reached a second final and were kept from a third by an Extra Time goal (by Chelsea of course) within this timeframe.

I've argued often with Liverpool fans that even given their commercial stagnation, they've had enough money to at least compete, even if being an outright favourite was slightly beyond their reach.

Liverpool outspent us (wages+transfers) for a large chunk of the 90s.

Given their underachievement both on and off the field in that period, it is only to be expected that they shouldn't be able to compete with richer clubs.

    Yep.

That's what I'm saying: any failures they've had in the past twenty years, have more to do with them than anything their competitors did.

That is discounting everything SAF has done.

Sure, if you choose to take a basic statement and extrapolate it to it's most exaggerated possible implication.

However, we're not talking about United's success, which was started and maintained by the central figure of SAF and has seen team after team built and has challenged all comers. A stronger Liverpool would not have altered that process.

None of this has anything to do with the fact that whatever else has happened, Liverpool haven't been where they frankly could and should have been. They haven't mounted anything close to the number of legitimate title challenges that a club of their stature, resources and fanbase should.

Says **************-all about Fergie though, who has proven himself enough by building United back into Champions and going head-to-head with some very strong teams and managers (not to mention those billionaires that "Stevie G" is whining about).

I wonder if we could tempt Real to take Cheech off our hands, swap him for Varane or part of a Ramos deal.

Tompkins and others have done great analysis on this.

The 90s was when they squandered their relative wealth

The 00s was when they paid for it

Why would we want a third striker who (with all due respect) is inferior to our current options ,when we are struggling to keep Benzema and Higuain happy with their level of playing time?

For all the complaints about the FA, they have managed to issue 2 solid judgements re Terry and Suarez

Although it was an open and shut case really given the findings of fact in the criminal trial.

No doubt chelsea fans will rally around their great leaders kool aid
