Although I talk pretty harsh about baseball most of the time, I've never really hated it. I grew up watching it. I hate that people think it's a sport. It's not. It's a game. There's a difference. And I hate what it has become. And I really don't have time for 2-3 hours of almost nothing intersparsed with commercials. But I still like the Orioles, and yes, I am feeling the magic happen.
At first I thought you meant But then I remembered it was a dog race track. I had to think for a minute. *No, I am not channeling Bob Costas. I said he was a fake squirrel. It's a joke people, relax. He's got crazy hair.
That's why they're called ballplayers, not athletes. Compare the physique of say, Babe Ruth, with, say, Ray Lewis or Golden Balls (as much as I hate to say that!). Like you, I am not much interested in devoting half an afternoon or evening to watching commercials.
Baseball players don't look like Babe Ruth anymore. Baseball players these days, on the whole, are pretty athletic.
RFK is more authentic. It has real, disease carrying squirrels to steal our attention during games. I miss the less threatening squirrels of WPS. //the best part wasn't that it was the Championship game, but that the squirrel was running around near the field and the stands for a few minutes before going on the field.
I think it is deliciously ironic that the stadium site the Revs are looking at is a former dog racing park.
Yep. And college football too, as well as college bastketball aired on CBS, though I do make an exception for MD and in March.
no kidding. I had one of the NFL games on my second tuner Sunday and every time the race would go to commercial (it happens more there than it should as well, they even have a website that tracks it) or was under caution, I'd flip over to the NFL - it was ALWAYS at commercial. I finally saw a part of the game in the second half, but it was ridiculous. I found it funny the first few times, then it got frustrating. At least most stations that do NASCAR now do a side-by-side for commercials during the second half of the races so you can still see the live action without the commentators (often just fine that way). If the commercials go long in NFL, the ref runs out and won't let them start play again until the commercial's over Oh yeah, topic ........ approve that stadium, DC Council!
Try hitting a baseball and tell me that doesn't take athleticism. It requires strength, coordination, timing, speed, explosiveness, balance, anticipation - all things that are marks of great athletes. It doesn't require the stamina of soccer, but to imply guys like Bryce Harper and Ian Desmond aren't "athletic" is a ridiculous statement. I guess you don't watch much sports, then. Because all they are, at the big time level, is a source of advertising. And that includes watching guys run around for 90 minutes with Volkswagen and Red Bull logos all over their jerseys, playing in stadiums named after companies and surrounded by acres of signage. There may not be as many "commercial breaks" in soccer but it's just as "commercial" as any other pro sport.
I'd gladly trade field and jersey advertisements in football for less commercials. Then again I mainly just watch Redzone on Sundays so it doesn't matter mostly.
Redzone so kicks ass. Best thing to happen to sports in years. I'd love an MLS version on Saturdays, or, even a Euro one. That'd be great.
The difference is commiting to a 3 hour TV window for 60 minutes of game time or commiting to a 2 hour window for 90 minutes of game time (+stoppage time) The difference is huuge. The logo on the jersey doesn't distract me from the action on the field, but a 30 second commercial for the new Passat would distract me from the action on the field.
The problem though is that it's much more designed in football when someone is close to scoring, barring a big play. You can gauge when someone is making an attack in soccer, but I think it would be much more difficult with the same amount of games at one time as Redzone. Also games so spread out on Saturdays from 1:00 ET to 10:30 ET. But if the matches kicked off at the same time I'd have it up with the DC match up as well. (1 computer and 1 TV or something). I think it would definitely help expand knowledge of other MLS teams as well...I know my NFL knowledge of other teams has expanded
I know you weren't responding to me, but this is exactly why I didn't make that statement. There are amazing atheletes who play baseball and total goons who play soccer. My point is it's not a sport, it's a game. It's more like chess, billiards, bowling, and golf than soccer could ever be. I'm not even saying that's a bad thing, I'm just saying it's different. There are sports, games, and competitions, which are all different things. I can't speak for the poster quoted, but I think we agree, and the point wasn't that it isn't commercial, the point was that it doesn't waste valuable hours of my life forcing me to watch commercials instead of the event.
I hate CBS for not keeping Gus Johnson. I'm tired of the ol' boys club calling the Final Four. They don't allow for the same excitement of the tournament. Johnson can make a Quakes game tolerable. It's one thing when eSECpn is all over the SEC, but the commentary and announcing on CBS on Saturdays is pornographic.
That's entirely different. Whether something is entertaining or not is often up to the individual. I certainly understand why someone wouldn't find baseball entertaining. But denying the athleticism required to play a particular sport is the kind of snobbery and elitism and narrow-mindedness that soccer and soccer players have often been accused of in the past and I hate seeing it go the other way.
