So, aside from my MLS viewing, I also regularly watch the NBC show Grimm, which is set in Portland. I didn't get a chance to watch Friday's episode until tonight. The first segment of the show that wasn't recap of previous episode was set in a bar. In the bar, the bad dude walks in and sits down right next to someone wearing a shirt with a large, obvious Timbers logo, and after seeing that, I noticed that there is a neon "Timbers" sign situated right next to the head of one of characters (who is talking). Then, more people, all dressed in Timbers gear, and on the television, a soccer game. It's this type of subtle cross-promotion into the realm of non-soccer people that makes NBC such a valuable partner with the MLS. I hope they keep doing it. Here's a link to the video on Hulu: http://www.hulu.com/watch/406901. The scene I described starts at about 1:00, and lasts about a minute.
Like both the show itself and the promotional efforts. Hope for more of these for the entire league and the other teams as well... My fav character of the show...
I actually took three screen caps during the show and forgot to post them. They'll go in the other thread later. It wasn't the first time. There was a soccer game on the televisions that I assumed was supposed to be a Timbers game at a Timbers bar.
too bad Grimm is a wretched show ... network schlock ... and the lead is turrible as Barkley would say but cool about the xross promotion i guess ... if MLS's target audience is people who can't differentiate a good genre show from network crap
I doubt this is NBC pushing cross-promotion. The show is actually filmed in Portland (as is Leverage) so its easy for the producers to work in the local angle like that. (Plus they had that neon Timbers sign in the bar last season, before NBC was a MLS partner. The exterior of the bar is an actual bar in approx. the same location as it is in the show, though the inside I assume is on a set somewhere.)
i haven't seen anything in Leverage yet Timbers related since they moved to Portland for this past season ... but then i only watch occasionally so they might have.
Not that I've noticed, but like you said the show has only been set in Portland for thelast few episodes.
I apologize, I didn't think to check there. I do think this is a little more notable than "I saw a random person wearing an MLS Jersey in a non-MLS area". I wanted to key in on NBC doing the cross-promotion. It's one thing to have a Timbers sign in the background (which I didn't notice last year), but if you watch the scene (and especially the end of the scene), it seemed evident to me that they were trying to play up the Timbers. But maybe Portland is actually like that.
Fairly typical to have the neon sign, but the number of people with Timbers merch was clearly placed. Not a single Timbers Army shirt/scarf in sight.
Says the ********ing guy who destroyed the "Best Photo in MLS History" thread by spamming it with countless pictures of random chicks and other such nonsense. ********** please...
I couldn't get into Grimm. I watched the first half of the first season and I was done with it. Cool that they are getting some Timbers stuff in there though.
Copy and pasting my post from the other thread... Fortunately, this show has lasted longer than the last NBC show to do this. //never underestimate metroscum stench
Just to drive home why this is important - Friday night, Nielsen estimates that 5.312 million watched Grimm live. I'm sure countless others, like me, watched it later online. You can't beat that kind of exposure.
Wow, they were almost blatant with all that Timber stuff. Neon sign and green back light. That's great for the Timbers and MLS. The bar patrons weren't too interested in whatever game was on the TV, though.
It was a permanent fixture of the bar's wall. I took a screenshot the first time I saw it. It was Chelsea Handler's show that was on NBC this winter and canceled after one season. The title of the show when it aired was Are You There, Chelsea? The shows biggest problem was Handler was judged to be too old for the show so they had Laura Prepon (That 70s Show) as Handler's character and Handler played an occasional secondary character.
It was from earlier this year?! I just assumed that since the team hadn't been called that for several years now that the shoe must have been from 2005 or earlier.
We enjoy the hell out of Grimm. It's fun and creative and the actors are all good in their roles. Sorry it's not a work of art like Jersey Shore or nude lawn darts or whatever the hell you watch. Also, judging from your incomprehensible spelling errors I'd say you can't differentiate much at all.
