No the ranking system is so lousy that it would would not solve anything. Wolfsburg is ranked 15 for f.... is there any sane person that would claime they aren't odds on favorite agains all teams except Lyon and Postdam? And Göteborg and Malmö is 10 and 13 and seroiusly there are only four teams they shouldn't be tipped to beat (Lyon, Arsenal and the German clubs). UEFA have an all to heavy points on the club and not enough on the country, anyclub that qualifies from FrauenBundeliga is a top 3 contender and top 6 if from Damallsvenskan. Still if they have not played in CL recently they will be ranked 15 if from FrauenBundeliga and probably not in even in top 16 from Damallsvenskan. The top sixin quality have been pretty constant recently. 1: Lyon 2-3: The two German teams 4: Arsenal 5-6: The two Swedish teams And that goes for any two German or Swedish teams that manage to qualify from their national league.
I like the idea of more emphasis on the country point rating. Maybe other tweeks, like extending the ratings to seven years, or adding a weighting for the most recent years. UEFA is just taking a the men's point system (for over 200 clubs, over two tournaments, both of which have a group stage, with the top countries getting seven clubs), and using it for a single tournament of about 50-ish clubs, with no group stage in the tournament proper, and a max of two per country. So that's why I advocate my tweeks above. I would tread lightly with UEFA stating, as you imply, "these are required to be the top six / eight / twelve seeds." The current point-rating system may be a bit cruel for first-time clubs, but it gets away from any "political" decisions made by some shadow committee. The last point I'll make, in favor of the current rating system, is that the best predictor of having success in Europe is... having previous success in Europe. So, yes, new team, you may only get scrub points from your country's rating, but now go earn your own points for later years.

Yes, probably there was a penalty for the foul on Gabbiadini, although in the interviews after the match both the trainer and the players admitted that Birmingham deserved the victory. They were more fit and strong, beyond this Verona is not going through a good period, on Saturday they drawed at home against a lesser valued team, lost another player for injury, so will be a very hard task for them to overthrow the score. BTW, the match will be played at the Bentegodi, the stadium were usually play both Verona and Chievo male teams, the admission is free, at least let's hope that a good crowd will show...
for those of you interested in the economics of the game, tonight i will pay cash money for the first time ever to see OL ladies play. 5€. D1 matches are always free admission whether they play at field n°10 or in the stade de gerland. for champs league matches there have been tickets as far back as i can remember, but these were at first complimentary for all at the rate of one per person, then since last year complimentary only for men's season-ticket holders (which my son was but now he's away at university). actual figures aren't public but my guess is that ticket sales can account for no more than 100k€ revenue per year. figures have been announced for the jersey sponsor specific to the women's team : 1.2M€.
