The consensus here has been more about Gonzalez as a potential back-up; that is, Beausejour's alternative.

Given the current circumstances, the only player that I'd like to see come off the bench for Beausejour late in a game is Gonzo. He rarely has an excellent game, but gets the job done most of the time in a competitive and slowly-improving league.

The midfield and forward short-lists are OK; plenty of guys who can potentially make a difference in these next two rounds. Although, Valdivia and Medel would have been huge for this double-round.

The weak-point is obviously the defence. Any game where we start both Jara and Vidal at the back (which is a possibility) is an immediate advantage for the opposition.

What were the options besides Pinto in goal? And, is O. Gonzalez injured/suspended?

Vilches viene jugando bien.

especially with Mena not available due to accumulation of yellows.

i don't see a major problem with 'la nomina'.............some can argue, as always, about certain players like Estrada, Orellana, Carmona, Carrasco...............but it seems to me that to almost everyone these would be arguments about second and third stringers. the guys that need to be on the starting 11 are there.

The problem is that sometimes people will invent a role for ‘X’ player when his key function does not match that role. It’s becoming increasingly important for teams today to use at least two centralised midfielders with different and clearly defined roles. Against less-able opponents, for example, a manager can get away with using a Vidal-Diaz pairing in centre midfield. This won’t work against Ecuador in Quito, or later on in Santiago against Messi and co.

What we need to do is de-construct the style of these players to arrive at a conclusion on their primary function. They are poli-functional to an extent, of course, but they each have a best role. We need to see what each player's best function is and lock them in that position; this is especially necessary for the second and third choice midfielders, because they need to be adequate alternatives for the players that they are replacing. For the sake of clarity, I'll give them two distinctive names: engineers and enforcers.

    Engineers:
    Vidal (first eleven)
    Diaz
    Estrada

    Enforcers:
    Medel (first eleven)
    Carmona
    Iturra

The above six are just the first examples that came to mind. A good understanding of our third and fourth choices is also essential; the selectors can’t just roll the dice and ‘wing it’ here.

I agree with you and the way you've outlined it, even though it seems that some of these guys can do a bit of both (kinda necessary for the role...though as you say their primary skills do lean in different ways.

It seems to me that the NT does have these roles rather clearly set up, almost always wanting to have one 'engineer' and one 'enforcer' together.........with Vidal-Medel being the preferred pairing (does anyone disagree with this?)

    - then off the bench you have Diaz as the more creative sub, and Seymour and Aranguiz as the more defensive minded subs. maybe a guy like Leal, if called, could also be a more creative alternative.

seems like you have at least 2-3 able subs for the position. Iturra i like, but he's just now gaining a spot and playing with regularity, hopefully at some point he'll get a chance...Carmona is barely playing at all, unfortunately, and for that reason probably isn't an option --> additionally to the fact that he hasn't met with borghi to work through the bautizazo problems, as Vidal, Jara, and Jean have.

I don't know man. I mean you're talking about NT quality players, criticizing Jean and Isla .....

but then you toss around the names of players that are either 100% unproven (Carrasco, Oroz, Davila), that alternate between good and horrendous games for the NT (Estrada, MCT), that don't even play (Puch), or that are waaaaaay past their prime (Droguett, RIELOFF).

all i can say is that we're all entitled to our opinions, but i'm siding with Borghi on this one.

As for Carmona, keep in mind three things. 1) he rarely plays and is probably out of form. 2) his past roles with the NT (under Sulantuay and Bielsa) are nothing like what he'd have to do on a team with two central midfielders, 3) he is one of only two players from the Bautizazo that hasn't made an ffort to meet with Borghi and work past the problem...

    I would put
    Pinto
    O.Gonzalez--Contreras--M.Gonzalez
    Junior--Vidal--Diaz???(no defensive midfielder)--Beausejour
    Fernandez
    Sanchez--Pinto
    Please debate my formation.

there is a defensive midfielder in Seymour....plus you probably will have Aranguiz on the team too

i assume your formation is the 3-5-2 that Borghi uses:
    ---------------Pinto----------------
    Osvaldo----Contreras-----Marcos
    Junior--Vidal---Diaz---------Jean
    -------------Matias-----------------
    ---Alexis-------------------Pinto-------

I'd say you'd have to swap Marcos and Contreras so that they play in their best positions. If Isla is healthy, even without playing much at Juve, he's the best option on the right.... the rest seems fine, though i'd see how they're doing in practice to choose between Ointo and Pinilla

my formation would look like this against Ecuador (similar enough to yours):
    ---------------------Pinto-----------------
    Osvaldo----------Marcos------------Contreras
    Isla------------Vidal------Aranguiz----------Jean
    ------------------Matias----------------------
    ------Alexis------------------Pinilla-----------
