Well, we're now in the Europa League group stage. Our opponents are AEL Limassol, Olympique Marseille, and Fenerbahce Istanbul. A tough but interesting draw. I expect a lot of fans to make the trip to France. First up is the away game with Limasol on Thursday. It will be interesting to see who plays and who rests. I expect Brouwers to play for one and maybe Heimeroth gets a start too.

Seems like there is No Break for Gladbach This season, a season of "High Expectations" ( somewhat) and a season that might determine how much longer Favre would stick around at Borussia Park?
There is an element currently present ...something i cant quite pinpoint what that may be?? As much as the quality and potential is there...its not only the "Time" factor for "maturation" that is missing at the squad in order to finally start running on all "Cylinders".It may be a key factor but not the only one.As i said there seems to be this unknown problem that even Favre is finding hard to figure out,Like a Deadlock in the operating system of our Club...best way to explain it !!!
Last seasons "Magical Sensation" and its effect on everyone has spoiled us all a bit for sure. We all expected a more bumpy road this season i believe and here we are at last !

This group is as TOUGH as they come, playing in turkey against "FENERBAHCE is like hell...and "Marseilles" scares me too much as well.A win in Cyprus though will make things much more easier for this club's current state...and maybe help a little in order for things to fall back on its right track for Borussia:alien:o_O:devilish::eek::oops::whistling::speechless:

Marseille and Fenerbahce are probably favorites because of their experience in Europe but I believe Gladbach can surprise them.

I'll agree, but I really don't know what kind of team we have yet. Replacing three starters lets us know that we are in a transition period. I think, in the end, we'll be pretty good. But that might take a few months. By that time we could be out of the the Europa League.

Wow,bold decision by Favre...but i totally like it and support it.Seems like Arango, daems & De Jong will not fly down to cypress for the first leg.Its nice to feel you have that kind of depth in your squad:) :) :)

Pretty confusing decision to let 3 important starters at home (according to Favre, they badly need a rest) ... but well, I hope that our manager knows what he's doing. I'm still so grateful to him that I'm gonna forgive him even in the case his decision turns out to be wrong in the end. After all, it's surely very risky when knowing about the importance of the game. However, there's no doubt we need some rotation this season ... so other players get the big chance to prove their quality now. Just curious who will be Wendt's partner on our left flank. Mlapa is expected to have his comeback after the injury.

I feel this away game will be very tough (they are strong at home and have many foreigners in their squad) ... and we'll very likely need all 3 points in order to get a realistic chance of surviving the group.

Btw: Our game won't be shown on German free tv. Hopefully, there will be some livestreams in the net ... if not, I have to rely on "Fohlen TV" (which brings the whole game some minutes after the end of the match).

That's too bad. I get the game for free in the U.S. on DirecTV's European channels.

While this isn't on anything but Direct TV in the US, the Leverkusen game *will* be on Gol TV on Sunday.

Damn, we have to improve A LOT after the interval! Unfortunately, this 2nd string team (no Daems, no Arango, no Xhaka, no De Jong) is having huge problems with creating chances and winning duels in midfield & attack. After a good start (with Hanke hitting the post), we got worse from minute to minute ... and it seems that the guys don't get along with their huge pressing.

Hopefully, Granit Xhaka is replacing Alex Ring as playmaker behind Hanke now. We simply need the 3 points in this game!

    +1
2 Hits on the Post,he wanted to fire that ball so forceful ....that it took away a bit from its precision..the placing was right the keeper was fooled.....but yet, this forceful penalty kicks are only good when aimed at the centre...like the ones mostly Lothar used to kick!
Anyway , would have been a great away win with the 3 points...its just turning into a strange season,am not complaining tho!

We also couldnt get a rhythm going and switch to our fast paced connecting style of play,am glad the second string got a chance to play though without losing :)

The more it goes by the more its sinking in,this was HORRIBLE! Am glad Arango got some rest ,De Jong would have not been much of a factor..but Daems,i mean cmon...i bet favre is thinking about how that penalty would have been 99.9 inside the box if Daems was on that pitch:(

Am getting old and grummpy for all this...back in high school i could somehow handle it...being out of europe as a gladbach fan for so many years...has left me with no stamina nor patience to handle these situations siiiiiiiighhhhhhhh :(

Btw dont you all agree Xhaka should have been the first choice to take the PK?? Does LF signal whos to take the Kick or the players decide??Even Rowel or De Camargo would have been better choices.
Now we are in a deep hole in our group, the french must be really happy about this result!

Typical for tonight's poor performance that we even missed a "last-minute" pk by Wendt. :( It's the first time that Lucien Favre is getting confronted with serious criticism (especially for resting important players), many fans believe he's not really interested in the EuroLeague ... and that's pretty disappointing for any BMG fan after finally being back to Europe. Well, our 2nd string squad obviously isn't good enough for rotation (especially guys like Hrgota & Ring were awful tonight) ... and the fact that we can't convert our top chances this season, isn't encouraging either. After all, we rarely concede on the road (only 1 last-minute goal in Kiev).

Lot of work left for our training stuff. If we want to pass this tough EuroLeague group, we'll probably need 6 points out of the upcoming 2 home games vs Istanbul & Marseille. Not very realistic scenario, to be honest.

What i would like to know,if possible....is who got to pick the PK striker??? Wouldnt have xhaka been the obvious choice??Or Hermann even...i mean how on earth did it fall into the lap of Wendt??

My fear is that Favre isn't much of a man-manager, or a motivator, and might be overly-intellectual to get the best out of the team soon.
It's much more complicated now than before. The expectations were low after he took over from Frontzeck; he just kept the basic formation, worked on some details, key players came back from injury and got the results; the rising mood in the team and the improving success coincided with his tactical detail work. You don't have to be a great "man whisperer" to make use of this run.
Similarly in the last season. It was just the same team, the same players who barely survived the playoffs, and they kept the momentum. Favre didn't have to pull any mental strings to keep the team going; until the semifinal shootout against Bayern. The team wasn't the same after this unlucky defeat, and only got 11 points from the last 11 games.
Favre had to reconstruct a new team, it's difficult; and he always tells everybody that it's going to be difficult. That Herrmann lacks basic technical skills to play Favre's style of soccer, we're going to have a "very, very difficult season" (whatever that means), and that the players Eberl bought for him with his approval don't fit together.

Limassol was a 3rd-tier team, not better than Aachen or Münster or Osnabrück. They just got very physical, the ref let them get away with it, and our team didn't have any answers. Favre didn't have many answers. Some players like Jantschke or Hanke got into the "they want to hurt us, we want to hurt them" mood, and they were the best players; Favre looked more or less lost, and never inspired the team, or got the whole team to fight for their points like Limassol did. Fighting isn't his mentality; he likes playing, and whines when he has lost; about the difficulties of his job, about the players he signed himself, and so on...
He's a great coach. He's a great soccer teacher. But I think Peter Neururer or Klaus Toppmöller would have gotten a win there; and this win might have been important for the next weeks. Maybe the "technical problems" of great players like Herrmann might have to do with self-confidence in the end... but that's a point Favre doesn't address.

I don't agree with this statement (many BMG fans seem to be dazzled by their low player budget on TM and totally underestimated them). They are the title holders in Cyprus ... and let's not forget what Nikosia did last season (huge surprise of the CL). Nearby, Limassol was very close to eliminating Anderlecht in the CL qualifiers of this season.

They are not easy to play ... however, I agree that we should have beaten them last night.

    Well, let's install Stefan Effenberg (although I don't like/rate him as personality) as Favre's new co-trainer. ;)

The usual blah-blah about bogey-teams, humility and so on aside - do you really think they're better than a top German 3rd-tier team? Did you actually watch the game, and had a look about their dribbling, passing, and whatever skills? If Gladbach gets relegated - which of the Limassol players could help us to win promotion in BL2?

    Yes. Seriously.

Yes, I actually watched the game. I didn't say they are good in technical aspect ... but in tactical & physical aspect, they are clearly better than any German 3rd-tier team! That's my opinion.

If they were so bad, why didn't we manage to dominate & beat them (even our 2nd string should be clearly better than any 3rd-tier team)? As I mentioned ahead, we should have won this game ... but we weren't as clear favs as many BMG fans obviously thought.

Pretty simple answer. Did you watch the cup game at Aachen? We didn't manage to dominate them, and only got the win because of the individual class of Arango in the end. We would have gone to extra-time at 0-0 against Aachen without Arango too.
