In Minnesota once in awhile I'll see a political add, mostly the Democrats.

It's probably aimed at the small swath of Western Wisconsinites that watch Minnesota TV. It works both ways ... we got a good dose of ads in the Scott Walker recall fiasco too.

Heh, I don't see the connection. If the deity was Freddy Adu that would have vast explanatory power though. And I never said I was an atheist.

I don't totally buy this - I think the problem is the candidate more than the strategy even if I think the strategy has been bad. To the victors go the spoils - and positive narratives.

I am enjoying the "show" for now. I am surprised that the finger pointing and recriminations have started so early though.
It is an awful timing as well right at the beginning of the week. The chatter this article will generate will very likely cover any message the R campaign would attempt to push this week. These folks are totally inept and incompetent. If that trend continues, I can see a scenario a la Bod Dole where the R's decide by next month to divert their resources to Congressional and Senatorial races.

I think the candidate and the strategy have both been pretty bad. That piece doesn't help and this video will not help at all once it starts getting out:

I'm with David Frum. It's all very well to blame strategy and candidate, but come on what are either supposed to do? People don't like the GOP's plans. Mitt must duck and weave, duck and weave, because he can't tell the country what his core wants to hear, and he can't tell the country what his core doesn't want to hear.

I just read this on politicalwire and I am really flabbergasted at Romney's comments. And the dude wants to be president while blatantly disregarding and insulting almost half of the electorate. His disdain and contempt are so transparent. He is a sorry excuse of a human being. Pathetic douchebag.

    Dear Mr. Romney -

I have had years where I paid no income tax, because unlike in your case daddy didn't give me stocks that generated profits when I was young. In fact daddy cost me money, since I had to pay for his funeral when he died.

I never thought I was a victim. So STFU. I never thought the government owed me anything. So STFU. I never collected a dime of welfare or unemployment or food stamps. So STFU. And now I pay a 25% federal tax rate and you pay a 15% tax rate. Which means by your math, that you are barely more than half as worthy as me, since you measure worth and pride and value by federal tax rates. So STFU.

And about that post I wrote above, the one that said you were not to blame for your bad candidacy? Strike that one. You are a douchebag of the first order. You deserve the loss that is coming to you.

Wow - that's pretty interesting to see what those fund raisers are like - sounds like he was trying to tell them straight. If that pragmatic Romney leveled with Americans in that way, I think he might be much more effective. And unfortunately for Romney - all anyone will likely get out of that is the equivalent of the cling to guns and religion line of Obama's. Not sure it's totally fair to pull that out of context but that's politics.

I hope that the people who make Obama's campaign ads are paying attention.

Really? You think insulting 47% of the electorate would be an effective strategy for winning over independents?

Seems to me the lesson of that clip is that "tell them straight," "pragmatic" Romney would be guaranteed to offend very large portions of the American electorate.
It's not pulled out of context. The video is what it is.

This meme that somebody who doesn't pay income tax is a slacker has gotta stop.

My son busts his tail in college, took a full-time summer job that started a week after his classes ended, worked for 10 weeks, joined the family for a 2-week vacation, then back to school. He's supposed to be ashamed that he didn't make enough money in his summer job to pay federal taxes? He's a leech on society?

My mother in law works part time in a luggage store, to supplement her railroad pension. She doesn't make enough money with this part-time job to pay federal taxes. She worked 40 years before retiring from the railroad. She paid federal income tax for 40 years. Now she has a victim mentality? Now I should apologize for her?

Who the ******** are the people in Mitt's audience? I don't care how rich you are, you have to have your head wedged deeply up your ass to believe that people who don't pay income taxes are mooches.

Just in case folks can't be bothered to click the link, etc.:

    Pure Uncut Mitt:
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax."

Romney went on: "[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

    And then there's these gems:
Describing his family background, he quipped about his father, "Had he been born of Mexican parents, I'd have a better shot of winning this."

Contending that he is a self-made millionaire who earned his own fortune, Romney insisted, "I have inherited nothing." He remarked, "There is a perception, 'Oh, we were born with a silver spoon, he never had to earn anything and so forth.' Frankly, I was born with a silver spoon, which is the greatest gift you can have: which is to get born in America."

Now, I honestly do not know the veracity of that statement.
Is that a fact? Or is it a technicality regarding the word 'inherit?'
Or is he just full of Mitt?

I'd like to know what he's talking about with the "corrupt" part. Republicans take it as a given that Obama is corrupt? But nobody who voted for him will be influenced by that message? They sure as hell would if it was proven to be true.

And now the latest blunder, which I think came from the same tape as the 47% comment...

Not sure where I saw it, but someone mentioned that he didn't inherit anything except for his parents paying for an expensive boarding school, college, graduate school, and his first house.

He gave away his inheritance (presumably to the Mormon Church Corporation) because he was already filthy rich by the time his father died.

    EDIT: Close enough:

When his father died in 1995, Mitt donated his inheritance to BYU's George W. Romney Institute of Public Management.

He tries to be technical about it and say that when his father died he donated the money to Brigham Young. His father died after he had led Bain for a decade. This is all misleading. Of course he was born with a silver spoon. His father was CEO and governor.

Now besides all the schools paid for and probably entered due to funds and connections, let's compare the monies and influence donated by Romney's family relative to Obama's.

I can't believe he really said he wasn't born with a silver spoon. Hell, I consider myself to have been born with a partly silver spoon, and I was born into poverty and obscurity in comparison to Romney.

Modern day Ananais and Sapphira. Sure he gave his entire inheritance away. I'm sure he also has not used his fathers wealth, political capital or influence to help him along his way as well.

    Sure.
