Really looking forward to this. I'm interested in the new players now that Jimmy's gone.

Looks like Bobby Cannavale will be playing Nucky's new nemesis. I have to be honest, he's not the first guy I'd have thought of showing up in this series.

Personally, I'm surprised it took the producers this long to cast him on the show.

I thought Cannavale did a great job. I really enjoyed the season premier.

I just wonder how much longer Richard is going to put up with Gillian's antics. I don't think he has any intention of letting Tommy forget who his mother is. I also wonder when he's going to go after Nucky.

I found the introduction of Gyp Rosetti somewhat lacking in subtlety. I assume they wanted to drive home from the outset that he is a Tommy DeVito type sociopath, but I found it a bit much for an introductory scene.

I honestly think killing off Manny this early sucks.

Agreed, he was easily one of the best characters they introduced last season. Making him return for season three just to have him offed just seems a waste.

Ok so Manny got killed by Richard to avenge the death of Jimmy. If this is the case, is Richard aware that Nucky was the responsible for his murder?

Isn't it more likely that he avenged Angela and not Jimmy. Jimmy seemed resigned to his fate whereas Angela was an innocent.

And much of Richard's scenes in this episode were related to Angela.

I am not going to lie... he was one of my favorite characters. Sad to see him go. He was a jewish badass.

I think it was a mistake to make him Nucky's lackey in this season, he was too much of a personality for that. They brought him down to the level of Doyle.

His face getting blown away was a pretty spectacular way to go.

It's a popular trend now a days (if you get my reference to another show). ;)

I'm not sure the shift of Nucky Thompson from reluctant half-gangster to full-on gangster will be to the benefit of the show. A lot of the first two seasons were based on the uneasy balance Nucky had to maintain between his public persona and his criminal activities. Seems like he's turned into 1920s Tony Soprano at the start of this season. There were already enough real gangsters in the show, no need to turn the main character into one as well. With Nucky's metamorphoses, I believe Rothstein is now the most interesting of the remaining mobsters.

Nucky's public persona is now gone though, he only answers to the mighty $$ so he doesn't need to keep up appearances as much. Nucky always had someone else doing the dirty work for him, now he's just taking a more active role in it.

I get that, I just thought it was more interesting an unique when he still had to keep up appearances.

Slightly exaggerated, but I know what you mean. It's a bit hard to figure out what this show is supposed to be about this season.

I did not really dig the first episode. I could rattle off a list of specifics, but I'll spare everyone. But let me just say: I'm more than a little irked we still have to deal with Gretchen Mol's character.

    Fingers crossed for future episodes.

Enjoyed this episode a wee bit better -- perhaps had to do with the more focused narrative rather than checking in with Chicago and crazy Brothel Grammy.

    But:
Am I wrong, or wasn't the previous dynamic in the Chalky White household:
--Chalky's daughter being very eager for her beau to meet her parents and
--Chalky being greatly pissed off at the presence off this highly educated suitor and storming out of dinner in a class-conscious tirade?

But now she's looking for true love, and he ain't it?
And Chalky's saying she has to marry this guy because it will be good for the family, and it was her mother's plan all along?

Did I hallucinate all that other stuff?

    Also:
Eli to Doyle: "How the f/ck are you still alive?"
I always love it when a character says the exact same thing I'm thinking.

Plus, props to the costume dept. Doyle's hat couldn't be more perfect, without being an actual punchinello costume.[IMG]

I think Chalky was pissed when her beau was over for other reasons (I forgot exactly what happened that ep). I think he wants his kids to live the straight and good life, as we saw last night after the bar scene, and was pleased that she was seeing a med student.
