3. stanger, this is why a) Team Obama wants Romney to release his taxes and b) Team Romney refuses. This is a losing issue for Romney.

 

Let me tell you, George, the fundamentals of my tax policy are these. Number one, reduce tax burdens on middle-income people. So no one can say my plan is going to raise taxes on middle-income people, because principle number one is keep the burden down on middle-income taxpayers.

Very, very worrying statements if you are not "middle income" or "top 5%"...

 

I don't think I've ever seen a candidate so eager to put nails into his own coffin.

 

I'm beginning to believe that he doesn't want to be President. Hell, if I had only a tiny fraction of his wealth, I'd be living on a beach somewhere.

the wife and I were on our honeymoon in Bora Bora, riding in a taxi boat to the main island with a mormon family and their son who had just completed mission there...he had never been in the water the whole time...why you might ask? because Satan controls the water of course.

You are more than welcome to ask me - perhaps the only Mormon in these forums - what we are and are not allowed to do. Or what part of what Mitt Romney does is directly attributable to his religion. I am quite pragmatic about the LDS Church and more than willing to admit faults, so it won't be an exercise in defensiveness. I also have been know to have a sense of humor every now and again.

Want to know about my underwear? Happy to chat. Less happy to see something sacred mocked openly, a practice I assume most of you would avoid for other religions (and yes, we consider our undergarments sacred). But that's you're right, and you're welcome to do so.

By the way, I don't write this with any "weight" of moderatorship etc. involved - just me as an individual.

So, is that what the underwear actually looks like in post#5? And if I may have a follow up, is there a requirement that it be made of traditional natural fiber, or is it permissible to use more modern UnderArmour-type material.

You can get them in cotton, cotton-poly, nylon mesh, silk, and something else I can't recall. They're white, except for service personnel who might want/need them in a camouflage or other color in situations where stripping down to one's undershirt is a normal part of the job. The underwear itself isn't really sacred, but some marks thereupon are (symbols of covenants made in the temple), and if you remove the marks and dispose of them respectfully, you can then use the garments for whatever you want (like as cleaning rags).

 

Well, Harry Reid is Mormon, too, and you're really talking about some wide variance in positions. Larry EchoHawk was called out of the Obama Administration and into Church leadership in April. But certainly the majority of Mormons are Republican and will vote for Mitt. The Church has been hyper-careful about not appearing to back Romney in any way, and we've had statements from Church officials read from the podium urging folks to make up their own minds and vote how their personal beliefs dictate. We are, however, strongly encouraged to vote period, which is true of every election. I'd guess my congregation is about 70-30 Republican-Democrat.

Folks such as myself really struggle with the Romney candidacy. In some ways he's a terrific example of the best of our lay church, while in most other ways he is a politician running for national office - and I don't know that adherence to a doctrine of faith that requires things of its followers besides an amorphous "love and serve God" is possible for such people. It does not appear to be for Mitt Romney.

There's no prophesy about a Mormon capturing the presidency. There is one that I take to be completely misunderstood about folks in the church helping "save" the Constitution at some time when it (the Constitution) "hangs from a thread" I believe it goes. Of course that's broad enough to be interpreted by any political ilk (like maybe it means we'll provide a voice of sanity when religious freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution are waning for Muslims and they need allies in the US, or maybe it means the membership will go all in to prevent some hypothetical plot to take away our constitutionally guaranteed right to bear arms). Most prophesies are handy that way.

 

I'm not sure anyone can be President w/o compromising one's faith. Maybe it would be possible to be head of the executive branch in a country like Iceland, but in an empire... Well, that person is going to be compromised.

2. Have you seen their play "the book of Mormon" I think that is what is called? Did you think it was funny or over the top?

 

The thing about Trey Parker and Matt Stone - as seen in their episodes of South Park - is that they find Mormonism the religion bizarre and mock-worthy, but they do something quite different with Mormons the people, and offer them respect. Even in the cartoons, which are funny - and which go after pretty much every group on this and other planets, including otters, and if a couple of guys are going to take on otters as evil overlords, you can't really fault them when they go after your group, too.

Folks I know who have seen the play find it hilarious - some of them, but not many, are Mormon. I won't see it because, while I have no problem spending good money on tickets to a soccer game, I am not interested in dropping $150 + on a Broadway play (well, I buy tickets for my wife and kids when we're in NYC - they saw Wicked this year - it just isn't my thing). I think most Mormons react initially with dismay when something like that comes out, then realizes it doesn't really matter and go about their lives (like with the HBO series "Big Love"). Much ado about nothing IMO.

 

Plus, the Founding Fathers took pains to keep religion separate from state. Forcing politicians to basically be agnostics while at work is a good thing for religions, I think.
