Such a great show. Glad I was able to talk some co-workers to try it and two have become huge fans watching on demand.

This series shows you can make an intelligent drama that conveys a complex and subtle storyline and that people will turn out to watch it. Great cast too with Lewis, Danes, and Patinkin.

I was just saying to someone that the only reason I am looking forward to fall is Dexter, Homeland, and Sons of Anarchy.

I'm looking forward to it as well.

The only question mark I still have about it is the impression it gives that our enemy is incredibly capable instead of, y'know... essentially a bunch of religious fundamentalist numpties who couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery. If you look at most of the so-called 'plots' they've been crude, not to say, idiotic, in the extreme. It also seems to imply that we're in a less danger from homegrown terrorists, (neo-nazis, right-wing religious fundamentalists, etc.), than from Islamist extremists.

It's reminiscent of the same guff we had about the russkies back in the day when we were told they had ultra-secret this and that we had to protect ourselves from.

I'm not sure I understand your statement but I dont think the show is meant to give an impression but just to tell a story.

However, I have always been of the opinion that terrorist are capable because they can strike anywhere, at any time, with anything. I mean how difficult is it to buy an old school bus, park it in front of a building loaded with explosives and set it off? Terrorists have so many different ways to strike and I think this show reveals just how effective their manipulation can be and how easily an inside strike could come.

I feel highly conflicted about this show. On the one hand I have to admit that it was a very entertaining bit of drama, on the other hand some of the plot fed into the worst stereotypes and fears people have about Muslims. Because of the latter I feel about uneasy about a continued patronage.

But aren't some of those stereotypes and fears people have perpetrated by some Muslims, like the ones they're portraying in the show.

I'm not talking about the idea of an American being turned into a militant Muslim extremist.
I'm talking about certain narrative choices, like the ominous music before Brody was revealed to be a practicing (praying) Muslim. There is (or shouldn't be) nothing inherently sinister about his prayer, yet it was presented as such.

I think the music to build up the drama that he's not exactly what he seems to be. Now the game's changed.

There were plenty of other prayer scenes where there was no music.

That's true for a few of them, (maybe 0.0000001%), but the problem is the rest and that the west's sins are minimised and/or completely ignored so there's no context. It's as if these people, (even the incredibly small percentage there are), hate us for no reason and as if we've done nothing to harm them

Well, that's not true, is it.

It's a bit like American complaints about the reporting of the the Abu Ghraiib torturers, as if the people being tortured didn't know they'd been tortured and would be shy about telling everyone they met about it.

Take this discussion to politics please. Open a thread there. Crimen and Castigo could you move these posts to a separate thread in the politics forum?

Maximus' last post is the only one that doesnt apply to the show. The rest of the post discuss what has happened on Homeland.

I dont think the intention was to make praying as a Muslin sinister but to show that he is obviously hiding something and showing for the first time that the suspicions about him being a terrorist or at least being more than he seems might be true.

I dont think the show overdid any stereotypes. The show isnt about normal, peaceful Muslims, the show is about terrorism. I actually think the show has done a good job not embellishing or making that culture look bad. It seems that the writers and show runners have done an excellent job making the show as real as possible.

No it begins with Duvel and his comments on the show perpetuating stereotypes against Muslims.

For the life of me I don't understand the guilt. Particularly given what happened in Libya the same day.

The show is adult and well written. Everyone clearly understands that it's about terrorists and that the overriding concern is not to portray every Muslim as a bloodthirsty killer. It's only the terrorists.

You're right, he's talking about the show perpetuating stereotypes about Muslims, who are a big part of the show.

I really don't see how discussing what happens on the show as being something that should be moved to the Politics forum.

Because this thread would become about something other than what happens on the show. I'd rather discuss the merits of the show and in particular the performances and the plot, rather than whether the portrayal of Muslims is stereotypical or bias which is a non-starter because the show has gone out of it's way to show how the characters experience has tempered their behavior and choices.

I understand your preferences but just because you are a moderator doesnt mean what has been said deserves to be moved. I dont see where anyone has crossed a line. Everything that has been discussed has been about the show or at least stems from the plot of the show. If the conversation starts crossing a line, then I could see moving it but I dont see where it has at this time. I found always found this subform within BS to be pretty civil and mature so I dont see a reason to be so cautious.

I think people are misinterpreting things, I was not bothered by the fact that the show depicted Muslim terrorism. I was bothered by the depiction of all things related to Islam being portrayed in the most simplistic and stereotypical fashion. Like the fact that the sheik and his entourage were nothing but a bunch of misogynistic douchebags. Again, no one claims that there might not be many individuals who confirm to that stereotype, but if you add up many of those choices, you get a pattern that is a bit icky.

I think you are a bit naive if you think that the ominous music was only there because it was revealed that Brody was hiding his new religion from his wife and family. Even if that was the intention of the show's creators, that certainly wasn't the way it was interpreted by a good chunk of their viewers, imho.

Not really, it's not like I started watching the show with the desire to find offense. I went in barely knowing what it was about, other than the few details that had been revealed prior to its run.

Yeah, that was another one and, frankly, it didn't make much sense. If you go around funding terrorism it's maybe not a great idea to go around drawing attention to yourself in that manner. I mean, HOW many American girls was he employing?

Still, I suppose it also supports my theory that these people aren't particularly bright, so... :D

To be clear, I will carry on watching the show because it's well produced and it's at least semi-plausible I guess.
