Looks like something is gonna happen. I honestly hope that DCU stays in DC and doesnt move to Baltimore. The most obvious solution to me is to make a new 40-50K seater, state of the art, and have United and the USMNT play there. Thoughts?

I think I heard somewhere before they were aiming at making it a 25k seater.

I think this thread could serve as a good location for analysis as to why this isn't really "news," yet.

The article that prompted this is just another 60-90 day comment by DCU's FO about their stadium. Seriously, we already knew they were having fruitful discussions with DC and Baltimore. Hell, we even knew that the pace of those discussions would pick up once new investors were brought in.. Time to stop saying the discussions are going well and in X number of days/months/years they could start construction and time to shut-up until some actual progress is made (like a @#$@!@$%R location is picked out).

Yes this was sposed to be an analysis thread. And I analyze that these quadrennial reports of 'discussions taking place' are merely 'bread thrown to the pidgeons' to keep them happy. But on the subject of the stadium, the USMNT needs a home stadium.

I don't think the men's and women's national teams need their own stadium. The country is just to large for them to be playing in one location. That said it would be nice to see both of them start playing in more MLS stadiums regularly.

True, but it does beat playing in a dilapidated baseball stadium. They could play a game there a year.

Well as it stands El Salvador will probably be the national team having the most friendlies in that stadium. It would be good if the US makes heavy use of it as well.

They could, but that doesn't justify building a 40k-50k seat stadium when the primary tenant will only be filling a little over half of it.

Not all that hard to tarp off the upper decks. Look at what Vancouver did with BC Place.

Well, I don't guess it's that 'hard', but why would you spend twenty million extra dollars to have to tarp off the upper deck and produce a weaker atmosphere for 90% of the games?

Its a theory. That 20 million would probably be eclipsed by revenue of international friendlies, summer tours, concerts, etc. Those seats would be used alot more than the ones at RFK.

And BC Place is used almost every day of the year, including another tenant that actually uses the upper deck when they play games there. That, most likely, is not going to be the case for DCU's stadium.

Not that many concerts, summer tours, etc, require a 50k stadium. Look at the rest of the SSS, they are in the 18k-25k range and they are doing just fine getting other events.

Most likely, DCU will play in an 18,000 seater. Im just having fun throwing ideas out there.

25k. History indicates that 18k is too small for DCU.

Then just add a 15,000 seat upper deck then. Real easy to tarp off.

Who's is going to pay for it? Larger stadiums do cost more.

Why? Adding an upper deck just to have an upper deck is a waste of money, not just in the initial cost, but also the maintenance of it. If DCU isn't going to be using it on a regular basis, then there is no reason to have it. Also, I'm fairly sure it would already have an upper deck considering the design of the other SSS.

I already said it would be used a few times during DC games, once or twice for USMNT andsummer friendlies each, and i dunno, 4 concerts a year. Thats about 9 or 10 times a year. I really wouldnt discount the idea.

New DC stadium should be equal or better in quality and size than RB Arena! DC supporters should work with owners in designing their section behind the goal. Maybe their jersey sponsors can also help? VW have team in BundesLiga, Wolfsburg AG with nice mid-size stadium built 2002.

It has a capacity of 30,000 with about 8,000 being standing only and the other 22,000 of these being seated.
