This is the best woman soccer player in the history of US soccer, made it to the highest level, and won a World Cup, and doesn't understand offside. What else do you need to know?

I agree with your point about understanding offside, but Brandi Chastain was not the best woman soccer player in the history of US Soccer. Un- arguably, that honor goes to Michelle Akers, the only woman who, according to Bruce Arena, was good enough, big enough and strong enough to play on a decent men's team. She and Sun Wen of China shared the FIFA honor of best women players of the last century.

Yes, and even she has said that Akers was the best ever. ( at her own HOF induction.)

OK, we've established that I don't know jack about women's soccer. Is everyone happy?

I don't think you understand. I think Mia Hamm is a better player, now you should thank me for my awesome opinion and we're done :D

Ya know, as far as not understanding OS, the particular play (a defender plays the ball off an attacker to an OSP player), is sufficiently rare that I don't think it really qualifies as a hopelessly bad comment like some that we hear.

But he got the ball! ;)

Did you ever get the chance to referee Feldman?

But seriously, if that's a yellow then Nagamura's hack on Nguyen near the end of the first half should've been yellow, too.

I doubt Anno saw Barnes get the ball before taking out the attacker. Had he seen the play this way, I doubt he would have given Barnes a yellow card.

    -----------------

For some reason, former Crew/NZ International DEFENDER Duncan Oughton thought this offside was a "tough one to call":

I heard he and Brandi Chastain got together for drinks post game.

    PVancouver?!

I'm embarrassed it took 5 months and 63 posts for me to realize this.

I suppose he's saying that because the ball came off the keeper's foot. Not controlled, I know, but could be confusing for the average commentator.;)

sounded to me like he was giving kudos. that in fact he was in an offside position when it was last played and subsequently was called correctly, despite the "toughness" of getting it right. i may be incorrect in my interpretation of the comment...

That was my take, or at least allowing for the how you might get it "wrong".

    Not refereeing related, but:

Brandi Chastain: The duties of a defender are to defend.

    Really, Brandi? Sure about that?

Sounds like she doesn't like criticism. Shouldn't she have better things to do than listen to match commentary?

SEN/URU game, beginning of second half.

Comm: That's a good challenge there.
    *whistle blows*
Comm: Oh, no it's not, according to the referee.
    *shows YC*

Chastain was constantly criticizing throughout the game. It was enough where it was detracting from the game for me. My sister as well and apparently countless others.

I got the impression Chastain thinks she is better than the current team and feels as though she has to criticize them any chance she gets to let them know that they aren't as good.

Thats just the impression I got from that one game. Not saying that is the way Chastain feels, but she came off badly.

You can analyze a game, including making some criticisms, without coming off the way she did.

Then throw in the history between Solo and Chastain and you can understand why Solo might be defensive.

Also, I believe we're so used to both the play-by-play and the commentary announcers of being "rah-rah USA!" with the pompons in Olympic games that we're shocked when someone actually criticizes a USA player or team.
