I don't know if he would be interested in leaving MN... Manny Lagos Former Crew player, coach of defending NASL champions, enjoyable style of play (ex. they went after RSL in the USOC) that gets results and he has managed this all through some uncertainty in the organization (change of owners, NASL-USL furor).
I think I would give a look at John Spencer, despite his record in Portland. I recently spoke with a broadcaster with ties to the Crew and he intimated that while we were probably not going to get a new coach any time soon, that we should try to get Robin Fraser if he ends up being available. Frankly, I like what I see of Iribarren too. We could clean house of Warzycha and Lapper (although that might be a bit harsh on the poor guy) and have Iribarren as head coach, and maybe Gino could be an assistant, I have seen talk on these forums that he does a good job at their academy.Hopefully, when Buschie retires, we can get him to come back and be our keeper coach. I don't mind sticking with people who have played here in the past, but we need the RIGHT ones.
Isn't Lapper primarily a defensive coach? I think he's been doing a pretty good job... Fraser isn't anymore proven than Spencer, and both coaches' teams have been as inept at scoring as we are. Chivas has been even worse (11 goals in 17 games!).
Not a bad idea and sad as it is to say it's looking less and less like there will be a Minnesota for him to stay at.
Williams will get a job in MLS some day and ever y one who could have hired him and didn't will kick themselves for a decade or more. The guy has the one key talent: he can identify players.
Who did he bring in during his tenure in New York? They were pretty bad for most of that stretch, and I can't think of many good players they brought in then, but traded.
HSG and our FO seem to think that Indiana University is the most wonderfullest place on earth to find people who do soccer things, which means that either Todd Yeagley, Brian Maisonneuve, or Bobby Knight will probably be the next head coach.
No, after that USOC game if Colin Clark comes here to coach I don't renew my season tickets. Same for Eddie "you make me rich" Johnson. You hear me front office? Those two are where I draw the line.
I think player identification is the key here. Who ever you bring in is going to have to do the job of both RW and BB. One of our main issues now is that BB has a "vision" of how this team should play, and brings players in accordingly. However RW has a "vision" of what he'd like to do to BB when no one else is looking. They are the gang that couldn't shoot straight. The one thing that Sigi did here, and he is doing at Seattle is that he has a vision of what his team should look like. In both cases, he has gone out and identified players that supported his vision and brought them in. He can look at a guy and say, "He's got some talent, I need to develop him." Perhaps that is the advantage of the "College" coach....but if ABMOD can identify talent, and command respect from the players, I'd be on board. What did Colin Clark do?
Ironic that you mention this. My Leadership Quote of the Day via email was If you are not making the progress that you would like to make and are capable of making, it is simply because your goals are not clearly defined. - Paul J. Meyer
Porter would be the only college coach that I would be willing to hire. Williams deserves a shot and he would have to put a better product on the field that what we are doing now.
Clarke spent a lot of time playing to the crowd that night but he was right, the ref (Salazar) sucked that night. The game was at Jesse Owens and Clarke pulled his team to the far side of the pitch rather than go through the tunnel where we were baying for blood. There wasn't much security there since there was a concert at VCA, so I don't really blame him. His team did get showered with drinks and cups when they eventually left.
I think Ralston is going to make a great coach and Columbus would be a good fit for him. He definitely has the vision and the ability to relate to the players. A true professional for sure. Why not hire him mid-season. Maybe Spencer would go back to Houston if so.
It’s easy to look at the final table position and dismiss a coach, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. Here’s a closer look at Clarke’s tenure: 2007 – First year as coach, playoff semis (lost to Seattle on PKs) 2008 – Commissioner's Cup, playoff runner-up, CCL semis 2009 – 5 points out of Commissioner's Cup, playoff semis, CCL group stage 2010 – playoff champions, CFUCC champions, CCL group stage 2011 – 2 points out of Commissioner's Cup, playoff semis, CFUCC champions, CCL prelim 2012 – first year as coach, 4th round USOC (defeated LA in 3rd… okay, I’m reaching here) Add in his MLS experience, results in postseason and tournament play, and the feasibility the Crew could sign him and Clarke seems like a solid potential candidate to me. Sure, he’s a jerk and he doesn’t always play well with the FO, but the man gets results. As for Smith, he narrowly missed the playoffs his first two seasons in Colorado. I’ll give the guy a couple seasons to get the ship heading the right direction, especially if he’s making progress. It’s a bit misleading to show how his team finished in the West, especially with how wild cards were drawn in previous years. As for his seasons: 2008 – 1.27 ppg, 9/14 teams 2009 – 1.33 ppg, 9/15 teams 2010 – 1.53 ppg, 7/16 teams 2011 – 1.44 ppg, 6/18 teams Three years of trending up, a Warzycha he is not (yes, Colorado dipped a bit in 2011, hush). And I agree that getting hot at the right time is vital to winning MLS Cup, but it’s not everything. Having a coach that can put the team in the right position to succeed (or stay out of the team’s way) is an important part of the equation. Also, like Clarke, Smith brings MLS experience and is someone the Crew could realistically sign. I'll agree, neither guy is perfect or a sure bet, but I think they're some realistic, solid options. And, they should be a step up from Bobby, though you're free to disagree. TL;DR - You're a big stupidface and Clarke and Smith are the bestest coaches in forever.
Lagos is intriguing... hadn't thought of him. Someone else mentioned Hamlett, I don't think that would be the worst hire ever. One of the ex-players left off the initial list who apparently is actually interested in coaching the Crew is Freidel. I have no clue if that would be a good move or not, but I wouldn't be upset at the FO if they gave it a shot. At the very least, he actively wants the job.
Porter makes $350,000 a year at Akron with a $200,000 penalty if he leaves within the next 2 years and $100,000 penalty after for the remainder of his contract.
the $350,000 is based on $270k base salary with $80k annual bonus for promoting UA at events. This doesn't include other perks like car allowance, healthcare, retirement plan, travel expenses, etc.
We badly need an oil sheik or a crazy mad Russian oligarch to buy this team because Mr. Cheapskate Hunt ain't gonna pay 350k for a coach. I am pretty sure Bobby Rifle doesn't make that kind of money.
