Everything we say about tonight has to be filtered through the 11 v. 10 situation, but my biggest thought is "What might have been?"

Cameron playing as part of a 5 man midfield made a huge difference. You have to wonder what the results would have been if Dom had done this last year? Clearly Boniek and Camargo are better than what we would have had early last season. Davis, Cruz, Watson, Palmer and Cameron. But it still would likely have been better.

He was covering ground tonight like Rico used to. Aiding both offense and defense. Dom tried to make him either a middie OR a defender and perhaps his best role is sort of BOTH.

But tonight was probably the last time we'll see him. I'm not sure how many of you noticed But he was standing on the field long after the game. He doesn't normally stand around and wave to the fans too much. I think he's gone before Wednesday.

Am I going to be in all the pictures that involve pivotal moments in Boniek's career?! Hahahaha

I want Mr. Brooks to return....NOW!

This game was all sorts of fun! Got to talk to redinthemorning again and I finally met the (in)famous DonJuego! It's always a pleasure to meet people from the boards, and never hesitate in coming up to me and referring to yourself as your BigSoccer or Twitter username. I'll usually be more than happy to offer a beer or five.

Now for some game analysis. Corey Ashe wasn't the botchfest he usually is, and played a decent game. Cameron distributed the ball with an intelligence that many MLS players don't possess. I'm not saying talent, I'm saying intelligence. I can't be too certain but I didn't see him miss one pass. However, I tend to only catch half of the game in person, hence, I rarely actually make some commentary on games. Camargo's defensive stature is really allowing Boniek to go forward without having to worry about messing up. He can always pass it back to Camargo, and Luiz will just arm another play. Camargo reminds of a more talented Rico. He's solid and can attack at a whims notice. It almost seemed as if every play involved Camargo, Boniek, and Cameron. Taylor is the reason Cameron can leave and I'm not too worried. That's all I have to say about him, and that says a lot. Kandji is limber for a guy of his physique, and he played an alright game. I'm not going to elevate him too highly, because while some intelligence was shown in earning the penalty. I don't see him being as effective as we need him to be. Boniek is a game-changer. If he keeps on clicking like this and raises his level a little higher, we won't have him for that long. The Bear Bruin is such an MLS striker. He is being sculpted for this league, and maybe only this league. He's very Twellman-Ching-esque. I see him as an MLS player, barring any incidents, for the rest of his career. That Brian Ching was step for step almost exactly like his '06 spot kick.

I have way more too say, and I'm a freaking talker. However, I like leaving my soccer talk to one-on-ones...say hi if you're at the stadium and spot some fat dude with sunglasses and messy hair. Adios!

here's a little compilation of video clips I got tonight. Got the two penalties and some other footage... and don't worry - the camera was going out of focus from time to time - nothing wrong with your eyes... yet!

Completely agree. His cross field distribution to Boniek and Kandji made all the difference today and it was his best game of the season so far. DM is a very good role for him in my opinion.

    - Finally, I found a source close to the Stadium for my pregame burrito. Small Latin-Grill at Chenevert & Rusk, two blocks West of the Stadium, one block West of Orange Avenue. Forgot the name. They are still working on getting a sign up.
    - Absolutely incredibly gorgeous night in Houston. In mid-July? Wow.
    - DCU started brightly. Could have scored on a corner needlessly conceded early, or when Pontius got in behind on the left which happened three times.
    - Game was wide open from the start. Very favorable for DCU with their dangerous attackers. De Ro was getting some joy in the middle of the park. Maicon Santos was able to turn at the top of the box.
    - Corey Ashe turned the game with an absolutely gorgeous ball over the top to Mac Kandji. Hamid got a late start, Kandji pushed it past him and Hamid clattored into him. Penalty. Red Card. Brad Davis. 1 - 0.
    - Corey Ashe’s ball was sublime. It is easy to play that ball too wide, too inside or too long. It was perfect. Ashe was MOTM for me. Great energy, played the key ball that determined the game. DCU found little joy on their right and Danny Cruz had to work hard chasing Ashe all game.
    - Referee Jason Anno had no choice on the pen. I actually thought the red card was harsh because Kandji’s touch took the ball away from goal and he was not likely to get it before it went out. Having said that — you see that red card given a high percentage of the time around the world. Too much for my taste.
    - Game was decided late in the half when Luis Camargo collected a ball in a dangerous spot on the right end line and simply destroyed his defender and slotted the ball to Bruin for an easy finish.
    - History was nearly made. A night to tell your grand kids about. You were there. Brad Davis scored with his right-foot! An amazing curling shot into the upper right 90. Except Joe Willis finger-tip pushed the ball off the cross bar. Dad nabbit.
    - This game was about DCU going goal down/man down 17’ in. The game was anybodies before that moment. Goal down/man down on the road is a tall challenge for any team in MLS. Happened to RSL night before and they lost 5 - 0 to SJE. Compare to Chicago going a man down against VCW but up a goal and at home and hanging on for the 1 - 0 win.
    - Dynamo needed a game like this. Game was over in the first half. Three early subs. Some energy conserved for a tough and busy week. Three points against an in-form playoff rival and secured the tie-breaker against them.
    - Can’t get too excited over the dominance. DCU was dangerous before the ejection. It is easy for everyone to look good against a team playing with 10 for 75 minutes. Dynamo still had to perform and take advantage of the situation and they did — so full credit for that.
    - Boniek scored his first goal. More importantly, he looked good all night. In the first half he received a chest high ball trapped against the sideline and made a world-class move to burn a defender smelling blood. It was a level of technique you don’t see in MLS that much. This guy just looks better and better every game.
    - Camargo was dangerous all night. Geoff Cameron looked like an EPL midfielder.
    - Got to meet Leo Ponce before the game, plus JC507. Both are Bigsoccer posters in the Dynamo forum. It is the greatest thing about soccer. The wonderful community of good people who love the beautiful game. Thanks for the call Ponce!
    - The drive back to Austin is downright enjoyable after big win like that.
    - One down — two more to go this week.
    Beautiful Juego indeed.

red card-i thought the same thing. my brother told me something i couldnt hear, but im sure it contained a "you" in the phrase. something about a duck.
night-even with a small crowd the stadium shines.. (they do need newcastle up in that beeyotch) and if you complain that it doesnt look good on tv on ya couch at home, i will tell you a story about a duck;) and you.
boniek- one day i will tell my kids about this guy who came from southern mexico -ha- and was the perfect dynamo, strong defending and vicious attacking.. no prep time needed, he came fully armed for battle.
leo-that guy is way too friendly.. i hope he doesnt end up putting the lotion on the skin for being so nice to strangers.

Enjoyed seeing Boniek score but really loved seeing every Dynamo hug and congratulate him after. Unlike people like Landín and Koke who only talked about being excited to come here, you can actually feel Boniek's excitement and it makes me very happy.

Luiz played his best game of the year. He showed some real speed to beat Danny Cruz to a free ball and knock it out. That was cool.

We saw Brad almost score with his right foot too, we were shocked I tell you!

What about the other non-penalty call? I think the final offsides call was fair, but I never saw what the original foul was. Glad it didn't count.

How come they don't give out the game day magazines much? Where are they? There was one sitting under a seat behind us when we got there, I don't know how it got there, but it was the only one I saw all night. I've asked the attendants at the stairs where they are, they always g off looking for them but never find any either.

It's fun to win by 4 goals. I don't like pressure. Relaxing at a game is nice. But instead of worrying about the score, I worried about injuries and red cards. But it worked out well. See you Wednesday.

Did everybody wake up in a GREAT mood today?

A win, 4 orange goals, Davis discovers his right foot, attack-minded players, 10 free cans of beans, 6 bean coupons, 6 cajitas de cereal, and 3 coupons for free deny's.

10 vs 11? I'll take it. There's been times when we can't score one goal even playing vs 10 men. Maybe our attacking will finally improve? We'll know at the end of this week.

In the meantime, nothing but smiles...

    never heard of him! :D

i agree with you that red cards to GK in those situations seem harsh. its definitely a foul and a PK, but the red card is a game changer. you can make a monday morning centerback argument that it looks like Kandji pushed it too far and wasn't going to reach the ball. so is he really in direction of goal with a definite scoring opportunity to warrant an ejection?

btw, i thought i saw 2 things last night that may prove Westside's theory that this guy is the worst ref in MLS. i rarely complain about refs but i was left scratching my head and i didn't set my DVR to review what happened.

#1 on the Texas End the Dynamo had a CK. apparently he blows the whistle for it to be taken, sees a Dynamo foul then calls the entire thing off and gives a goal kick to DCU. i disagree with this 100%. when a team has earned a CK, it has a right to take it. the ref could of blown it dead, gone to verbally warn the players or hand out yellow cards then have it re-taken. for me, it would have to be a serious foul for me to give back possession to the defending team without the CK being taken. i mean someone would have to punch someone in the balls and even then i would consider having him carted off and iced before resuming play.

#2 on the Walker End he seemed to run to the penalty spot and award the Dynamo a 3rd PK due to a handball in the box, but the handball seemed to be on Brad Davis instead of a DCU player. he was saved when the linesman signaled an offsides call. if he WAS calling a handball near the penalty spot there's not a need to run to the spot and lay on the whistle. just blow the play dead and walk over and point to the spot of the goal kick.

did anyone else see the above or did i imagine it?

I agree with you Celt except for the first 15 minutes when our team looked confused about their defensive responsibilities / organization.

It would be nice if someone on the board could disect the breakdowns with Pontius on Hinault's side of the field. What role did OBG have to play in those?. Three times in 15 minutes WTF?!?!?

Besides that, it was nice not to have to worry about a game being close once we went for the the jugular with Luis's aggressive run and tap in assist for Briun. Have to say that Kandji's size and speed helped us last night.

The whole team seemed much more confident last night - I hope that it wasn't just fact that they were against 10.

Game day magazines are found in boxes on the floor in one of every three tunnels. I found one in my tunnel this week when their normally isn't. I literally have picked up one up and had never had anyone had me one all year. Sometimes you'll see someone handing some out near club section though, sometimes.

I agree, especially on the last one (sadly I can't use bold on the iPad). Also there was the possession call on a ball over the sideline, he overruled the call from the linesman who was right in front of the play. His view was much further away and blocked by the two players.

The Blue Crew was disbanded by BBVA Compass Stadium as stadium staff fill some of the roles. A smaller version of them exists but only work through the first half.

It's hard (and probably unwise) to draw too many conclusions when the opponent played down a man for most of the game -- and was actually dominating play in the early going, until the red card. Several guys played well, but we need to wait to see if they're really improving in the new system, just had a great showing with the man advantage, or some combination of both. That being said, we really needed these three points. And the guys will still play with more confidence on Wednesday night. It was still pretty much what the doctor ordered.

DonJuego -- I think the new Latin grill in the same shopping center as Cork Soakers -- the one that doesn't have the sign up yet -- may be called "Burro's".

Btw, I tried the Texas BBQ House before the game. It was pretty filled with Dynamo fans. I had the lean brisket, which was decent. Some of the other stuff, like the burger, didn't seem to be as well received. The staff was friendly and tried to be helpful.

Wow I am still in a good mood . . . . especially since I tracked down some Dynamo Beans. My thoughts:
    1) That is what I call possession with a purpose. As opposed to early in the year where we had a lot of posession that yeilded little, they looked to press the attack last night. The quick switches are the key to breaking down defenses and this is one of the few times where they seemed to do that all game.
    2) Yes we played against 10 men but two things I like about last night. They kept pressing the attck, albeit smartly. Secondly, if we are going to stay in this formation last night was a great way to gain confidence and work out where everyone needs to be. I noticed that Kanji and Bruin would still end up making runs to the same spot so they still need to work on it.
    3) I still want Brad out wide. But, while I saw some folks give Cameron credit - the true credit off the ball for shutting down Dero came from a VERY unlikely source. Brad was in his shorts all game long. That was one of the finest defenses games I have ever seen Davis play. He was Ching like in his work ethic.
    4) SO the Cameron situation. Well, when we were in the 4-4-2, Taylor's form had me less concerned that he was leaving. After watching us play the 4-3-3 for several games both with and without Cameron: we are going to miss him more than we know. I contend the key to breaking down defenses in this formation is switching the ball quickly and pressing the weak side from the wing. We don't have anyone that can take his spot at DM or CB in this formation that is able to do that with his vision. Part of the reason we went from zero goals to four.

Two more games like that and we will be looking good coming into the home stretch. I am still not sure what additional player we need to bring in under the new formation. Forward? DM? CAM? It was an easier answer under the 4-4-2.

troutseth based on your evaluation that it was the switching of the field that led to more goals and that Cameron was mostly responsable for those switches, I can't help but think we need a DM or CAM that can do those switches.

That is kinda my thinking after watching last night. I would like to see one more game with Cameron in that formation before I (personally) would make that call.

There are several places where we could use some upgrades but aren't critical . . . what is critical is the playmaker that makes the engine run. The issue I have is under our shifting formation I can't tell where that player should reside. I would say either CAM or DM in the 4-3-3, or recessed forward in the 4-4-2.

    Agreed Anderson.

The first 15 minutes were not real kind to the Dynamo as we weren't able to deal with their wing play. Again, I think part of that was down to our formation.

Naturally, everything changed after the red and allowed us acres of space while DC wore themselves out chasing.

Pleased with the play of every player but want to single out Kandji, Boniek, Cameron, & Taylor.

I also believe that our crosses from Ashe & Hainault were better on the night but it's always helpful when the opposing team don't have the personnel to close you down quicker.

    A great three points.
