Thanks for posting the article. Barton has to be the Debby downer of course, but, as with USL-Pro, NASL I think could be a great fit if there is a way to manage travel costs...

He may be a downer, but he's also right. As it is the Flash have to travel a fair bit in the NPSL West. Those costs would get several orders of magnitude worse in the NASL and could easily be a deal breaker on the team moving up until there's more teams out west in that league for the Flash to either go up with or join. If they go up too soon due to both travel and just league expenses they could easily end up over extended and out of business.

That's certainly the biggest issue (also, I'm not saying Barton isn't right, just saying he's always the downer :)). Another problem with San Diego is the lack of an SSS, and I can't imagine what kind of political battle that might become... Of course, I think if an SSS got approved, that'd be all the evidence of serious interest the league would need...

A SSS would never be approved. If built it would have to be done privately like the Home Depot Center and Earthquakes Stadium have both been done. It's hard enough to get public support in California for an established league like MLB, NBA, NFL... It'll be absolutely impossible for a soccer league that's not even top flight. Closest to a public SSS you'd ever get is IF the Chargers stadium eventually fails and SDSU needs to build a smaller football stadium built that a soccer team could attach themselves to as well. Otherwise a San Diego SSS will have to be a private affair.

Which is good in many ways as it clears up many bureaucratic and taxpayer hurdles and gives the teams flexibility on where to build. But it also of course means the team needs the funds to not only run the team but build the stadium. I can't see a D2 or D3 team taking that risk short term until they're sure they're established. Which means a D2 or D3 team would need a home that already exists for the foreseeable future. That means if they're NASL D2 either Qualcomm Stadium or Torero Stadium (as they're the only stadiums that meet USSF D2 requirements). Unless there's a high school stadium in the region I'm unaware of that has more than 5,000 seats.

Yeah, Torero Stadium would be good in the short term (Balboa Stadium seats 5,000, but it's in an awkward part of town, RIGHT where the 5 goes from east to south, and parking is nasty). I have a feeling that games in the Q would probably be impractical. I have a buddy who works at Qualcomm, maybe I'll just have him have a sit down with Irwin Jacobs and see if he won't just build one...

Actually I think Balboa is only 3,000 right now. Though due to it's design it wouldn't take much to expand it to at least 5k. But as you say it's not the easiest stadium to get in or out of and parking is scarce. And the field itself leaves a lot to be desired.

San Diego State's Sports Deck seats around 1,000, but probably could be expanded significantly. Parking is no problem, as it's on top of a 2-story parking structure... The problem is the physics of trying to get 5,000+ people (and the structure to support them) on top of the parking garage...

While SDSU does have long term plans to expand the sports deck, I question whether it would be economical or even possible to expand it to 5,000. There's not a lot of room to build around the field as it exists today beyond extending the length of the existing stands.

Well the Flash completed their home schedule and remain undefeated going into the season finale game up in Santa Clarita. And on top of that they announced last night's crowd was their largest to date (in typical NPSL fashion however they neglected to list the attendance). And in case anyone missed it they locked up the NPSL West-South conference title last weekend in their annihilation of the hapless Phoenix Monsoon.

All in all a great year for the San Diego Flash. Hopefully they can keep up the momentum into the playoffs unlike last year.

I really wish they'd list attendance, especially when they announce "largest to date." I was really curious to see what attendance was for the SD Derby.

Hopefully they're settled for a while, and attendance has a chance to grow.

Honestly I wish they'd move back toward the heart of the city. Stability is nice, but Del Norte is quite a ways out there just barely in the city. I mean if attendance skyrocketed over last year and rent is that much cheaper than say Westview High last year then I can get them staying put. But I'd rather they be south of the 56 if they've not saved much money and their "best attendance ever" is only 5 people more than they were previously getting.

Yeah, I just checked Google maps to see how far it is from my house in Clairemont. 31 minutes... It's practically Poway. It makes me wonder how good of a deal they got going with Del Norte. I'm not familiar with high school sports in SD, so I'm not sure what would be a good alternative, although I imagine any high school, like you said, south of the 56.

Doubt it means much. Wynalda and the Flash owners are friends (Wynalda is even peripherally involved with the Flash from time to time), so it was just them teaming up for CalFC's run into the cup.

I thought that might be the case. I know Wynalda's close with the Flash, seeing he was involved for as long as he was. Btw, his recent move to Atlanta, is it any indication of him "knowing people" in NASL...? I don't mean to jump the gun, but I can't help but be curious.

No idea. Probably nothing more than coincidence though if I had to guess.

Probably, and of course I don't mean to understate his competence as a coach.

Looks like the Flash's first playoff game of the postseason is going to be July 14th at 7pm at Del Norte High Stadium.

Word on twitter is that the Xolos are playing the Flash in Chula Vista at the Olympic Training Center at 6PM tomorrow. Not sure if its open to the public or what because there is no official word yet....and who knows it may be the Xolos reserve side again.

Hey last time I saw an FMF reserve side play the Flash in 2010 (Chivas) it was pretty entertaining. Hopefully it's open to the public. I might just take a few hours and head down since I missed the Flash's home finale thanks to my wife needing a pickup.

Also Flash just picked up the number 4 ranking nationwide between all PDL and NPSL teams in the US Soccer Report. Not too shabby.

Oh forgot to post this when I saw it earlier. Video of the Flash's 5-1 home finale win over Fullerton.

Cool, glad they were able to find out if we're allowed in. Might just have to go.
