They are definitely in the discussion but I think some of those international teams in the late 90's would give them trouble in particular Brazil and France.
Only one team that can be compared would be the 1994 to 2002 Brazil but thats a big gap even if they made 3 world cup finals winning 2 and won 2 Copa America's, even tho you can't really compare it to the Euro cup the difficulty isnt the same. Other then that i dont see another team to compare it to. So Spain might be the best team ever
As it seems to be impossible to score against Spain in Knockout stage I would say they are the best. Never seen a team dominating like that.
They're for sure one of the best teams like Hungary 54, Brazil 1970, Germany 1972, Holland 1974. This is a category where a ranking between those is hard to make but they are for sure one of the best in history-
Two of the four teams you mention did not win anything (although Hungary won a Olympic Gold medal in 1952). And Germany 1972 does not deserve to be in the equation. They had difficulties to beat Belgium, you know. Within a stadium packed with German fans. It was played on Belgian territory but the stadium was totally German. Annoying. Brazil 1970 is the only legitimate name.
Without a doubt. They won 3 major tournaments and I think they're going to win the WC 2014 aswell so I'd say they're the best football country we've ever seen.
Spain Euro08, WC10, Euro12 Brazil Wc94, Copa95 finalist, Copa97, Confed97, WC98 finalist, Copa99, WC02 iT'S NOT because Brazil were not part of the Europe (to play Euro) that Spain were betetr than them... 2copas + 2 copa finalists + 1confed >> 2 Euros (no sweat)
True, but a Copa America finalist does not compare to a Euro winner no matter what. They played the USA in the semifinals remember. Yeah right. There was a Copa America every 2 years and a confederation cup (not a major trophy, BTW) every 2 years so the comparison is totally unfair. If you play 10 competitions and win 5 is one thing. Winning 3 majors in-a-row is something more impressive IMO.
^ Lets clean -up your post which was made messy by including the mickey-mouse confederations cup: The World Cup for each team cancel each other out, so we are left with: Spain: 2 Euros Brazil: 1 Copa America, 1 WC finalist, 1 Copa finalist (hardly worth anything). I'd say Spain takes it. To win a Euro there is no room for error. To be a WC finalist you start with an easier group (lost to Norway, but easy group so they still get through). Then you lose the WC final. So you can be a WC finalist even with 2 bad losses. You cannot be a Euro champion if you lose twice (realistically). Thus, Euro Cup > WC finalist.
Very well said totally agree playing in a competition were only 3 teams are truly competitive is also not the same as europe were you have an any given euro 6 to 8 potential winners no its no one's fault that the planet is lined up like that but you can't undermind a European teams achievement bc of it either
If you ask the older generation, they will always say footballers are more complete these days, its more competitive, and they are way too many superstars and great players. Brazil is still historically the greatest football nation, but most teams in today's age, can now beat Brazil, unlike in the past where Brazil dominated. However, they still produce great players. An easy argument would be, do you think Brazil's team of 1970's could beat the current Spanish squad? HELL NO, they probably wouldn't gone out the knockout stages or qualified! Also their no question that on this day in age, Euros are tougher than the World Cup. lol Compare: Euro: France, Italy, Germany, Holland, C.Republic, Portugal, Denmark, Serbia, Croatia, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, England, Spain, Sweden...then you have those tricky smaller teams like Kosovo, Switzerland, Bulgaria....who are always problematic. World Cup: Paraguay, Uruguay, Egypt, Brazil, Argentina, USA, Chile, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, China, Mexico... Yes we are the best team in history. The demands of Today's football are way to high! Football is advanced.
Yes. I had some hope that Germany could solve the Spanish conundrum, but alas, they didn't get the chance. We can praise or lament the style, but results ultimately matter. This generation of Espana deserve every accolade. Their dominance is astounding.
This. And let's add a few others, like Brazil 1958, France 1984 and Uruguay 1924-30. It would make an amazing tournament. One of the most interesting things about this Spain team is that it is the first national team to add itself to this "greatest team of all time" question in many years.
That is rubbish Any of those teams playing in today's football would have been calcined in the group stages, specially in the Eurocup. They could not compete, with any modern day football nation. The rise of the internet has made younger kids from around the world learn how to be better, and have more technique. Today's football in on another level, and the quality is way to high to be compared with those past teams. Germany in 1972 also did not win the final. So they are not in the same bracket! I don't even know why you included them there. They almost made it, but almost is never. so two cups.
