In my opinion the kid has a lot of potential and could possibly be an up and coming star for the squad. I'm not sure I would trust him with a lot of playing time in important games. Klinsmann seems to be more convinced of him, but he probably knows more than I do. Too bad we won't be able to see him in the Olympics. The kid seems to be pretty motivated and it sounds like he has a good attitude.

“For me, the most important thing is we win the two qualifying matches. Yeah friendlies it’s okay, but what matters are the three points and the World Cup qualifying.”

I agree but I'm pretty jaded these days. I used to be so excited for the potential of so many of our up-and-comers only to have them peak/decline/washout/injure. Personally I've moved to the "prove it to me" phase of fandom.

i think most USMNT fans have....

the hype machine began in the late 90s-end of WC 02 after the success of Donovan and Beasley from the residency/project 2010. We all bought into the hype machine and we thought EJ and Tino were next. Then it was Convey and then we thought Gaven would be the next star. But it was when Adu crashed and Altidore initially struggled in europe the hype in our development seemed to fall apart. Now, we see Agudelo struggling and are not surprised one bit.

As a result, USMNT fans have responded by finding the next dual-national to reach USMNT stardom. This came about after Rossi and Subotic became two of the most highly sought after youngsters in the world. Now, we are getting a taste of the poison from that path considering the Timmy Chandler fall out.

    Avoid the Boyd!

Can we make that his slogan if he turns out to be a stud for us?

I think we're going to have to see if he can be a stud at Austria Vienna (which seems like his likely club destination at this point)........before we worry about him being a stud for the national team.

American fans are in a desperate, never-ending search for "the next big thing." So much so that they overhype young prospects to the point of absurdity. This particular kid had never played a game at a level higher than the German 4th division, and people were listing him as a starter for the USMNT over guys like Altidore. Nonsensical.

from his time on the olympic squad, and minutes with the seniors, I"M HIGH on HIM

usa has NEVER had such a big skilled guy...

give him PT blood him in the semis

assuming friday goes as may expect, i'd play him the final 30 minutes

still the hex is full year away, and he h a full year of league play to hone his skills

usa CURRENTLY lacks someone with his skillset, and i like whta i see

Agree with you completely, with the one additional wrinkle that Altidore is also a relative "kid" at 22. (Boyd is 21.) Easy to forget that.

Good point. I always think of him as so much older because he broke out so young.

I have been one of the few people saying in here that Boyd has a lot of potential, when I said Boyd dominated everytime he was in the U23 camp people like Corona didn't believe me. I hope he turns out to be the real deal.

As I see it, these type of threads are often light on analysis and long on wishful thinking. But you know what? Getting excited about up-and-comers is the right of fans.

And you know what else? The fact that we have seen so little roster variation from Klinnsman is my #1 complaint about this era. It provokes deep-seated concerns, fueled by the aforementioned Olympics flame-out, that the new regime spends more time looking at its own ideas and goals than it does looking at its players.

So fans of Boyd, speak up! ...but just hope that Robbie Rogers or Orasco Fiscal don't convert to forward.

I was definitely one of the skeptics. Boyd impressed me in the El Salvador u-23 game. He has the heart of a lion and has, I believe, motivated a lot of the younger players to bring a certain energy to the pitch day-in and day-out.

All I know is that this kid's attitude is absolutely golden. Every video you see him in he's practically glowing in the presence of the veterans. He is 100% on cloud nine. I feel like the team could have a team meeting in a parking lot and he wouldn't care. He's just happy to be there.

Wonderful to see that attitude, and I hope he succeeds. Can't wait to see what he does next.

Who's worrying? You should save it for the coach - he's the one on the verge of playing a German 4th division player in a World Cup qualifier.

I don't think we are over hyping anyone too much.

Most of us just realize that we are relying on a bunch of 30 year olds in our A team. Like it or not, probably sooner rather than later a lot of young unproven players will start to be given chances. There are signs that Donovan is slowing down. Gooch and Boca are definitely past it. Gomez also turned 30 this year. Jones will also turn 31 this year.

It's not really hype, we have to play the younger guys. Most top teams compose their starting 11 of guys in their mid twenties who are getting plenty of playing time at a decent level. Of course that has only held true for guys like MB, Edu, Torres, and Johnson.

Overhyping happens all over the world. Have you seen the list of "The next Maradona" for Argentina? or "The Next Pele" for Brazil? As a Barca fan, I remember when Gio Dos Santos was being called as the heir apparent to Ronaldinho. Even further back, I remember Real Madrid touting Javier Portillo as the next Raul.

Nearly amusing that, after all that JK speech about players needing a consistent starting position with their first team and needing to challenge themselves at higher levels, he's been playing a 4. Bundesliga player.

I understand why it's happening, but he just needs to shut his mouth when it comes to certain things. Doesn't help anything to publicly undermine himself. He does it far too often to maintain the level of respect he had when he started with us.

Boyd is certainly athletic and seems to have a nose for goal. However, his skills are lacking, and 21 is kind of old to be picking up ball skills. He grew up in Europe, and most kids that age are a finished product by 21. We aren't overflowing with options at forward, so we'll take what we can get. Hey, let's give him a chance. I doubt he'll be a star, but he certainly has the physical tools for it.

Currently, a handful of German-American players are competing for USMNT rosters spots mainly due to Klinsmann, USMNT German coach, hope and potential. None of these players have achieved greatness in Germany! Indeed, few have more than a year of 1st team experience. No other National coach in USA or elsewhere would be trialing Terence Boyd with the full national side. The lad has never played 1st team football. His opportunity could only reflect Klinsmann's low opinion of American talent. Perhaps one day Boyd will justify Klinsmann's judgment but for now he is an unproven kid not a reasonable choice for full USMNT selection.
